The hits keep coming from all quarters for embattled Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Stories citing unnamed sources questioning Griffin’s ability and work ethic have become so commonplace that even TMZ has jumped into the mix, with a story quoting an unnamed player on the team ripping into Griffin.

“No one is happy . . . no one gets the hype around him anymore. . . . I don’t see him being in the NFL for that long. . . . I think he goes into politics. He’s good at that kinda thing,” the player tells TMZ.

It’s surprising to see TMZ report on this kind of story because when TMZ covers the NFL, it’s usually breaking stories about players’ lives away from the game, be it in the Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson legal cases or stories about players’ personal lives. It’s unusual to see TMZ report on a player’s popularity within his own locker room.

As Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post notes, however, one particular Washington player seems to have a relationship with TMZ: DeSean Jackson, who talks to TMZ about everything from his side business breeding dogs to how much money he spends on jewelry.

The TMZ headline also refers to the unnamed player bad-mouthing Griffin as a “star.” There aren’t many stars on the roster in Washington (some would say there aren’t any stars on the roster in Washington), but Jackson is about the closest thing the team has to a star. And one TMZ quote in particular, in which the unnamed teammate says he’s frustrated with Griffin because “We don’t have that real rapport,” sounds like the kind of thing a receiver would say about a quarterback. Jackson’s stats this season have been better when Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy are throwing to him than when Griffin is throwing to him.

We don’t know and may never know who the player talking to TMZ about Griffin is, but just as Steve Young’s criticisms of Griffin seemed to be coming from Mike Shanahan, it doesn’t require a huge leap to infer that TMZ’s criticisms of Griffin may be coming from Jackson.

In any event, this surely won’t be the last time we see a story in which unnamed sources in Washington bad-mouth Griffin. It’s open season on RG3.

That RG3 trade for Washington was awful. Good! Anyways, I think RG3 is done. He looks like a player that doesn't care and always blames everyone but himself. Seems like the team is playing much harder with Colt than with him. I hope any reports that link him to us are just bogus and no one is really considering it. A change of scenery won't do him any good. He was great with the option but he has lost a step.

Not the character issues, but the injury factor in these running QB's is why NFL teams have to take a long hard look at players like Mariota.

I'm just not getting this. The guy is pressured more than any starting QB this year -- 51% of his dropbacks (actually a smidge over that). Yet his accuracy percentage under pressure is over 71% -- which is pretty high. By comparison, Geno is pressured approximately 41% and his accuracy % is not near that. RG3's QBR is a decent 85 and his completion percentage is solid.

I understand he's missed some open receivers. And he tends to throw short. But does that justify the criticism? the benching? I'd love to hear the real inside story. Did he make moves on his teammates' wives and girlfriends during his injury stint? Did he get caught by his coach mocking Jon Gruden's calls on MNF? He did something more than is being disclosed here.

Any thoughts? Explore the space gentlemen.

griffin is a perfect example of why numbers & stats can be misleading.. BTW, you left out the part that he's been benched (not due to injury) two years running by two different HCs.. did he sleep with shanahan's granddaughter too??

I understand that stats can be misleading. But you can't just say "they're misleading" whenever you want just to dismiss them. To be fair, you need to explain why they're misleading. Maybe they are. I'm willing to listen. I'm willing to be convinced. Explain to me what RG3 has done on the field that's so bad? As I said, I understand he tends to throw short and he's missed open receivers deep. But still his numbers look pretty good, particularly since he's the most pressured starting QB in the league this year -- and the fact that his accuracy% is great. Football Outsiders has the Skins' pass blocking ranked 30/32 ... below that of the Jets at 29/32.

Please explain to me how RG3's numbers are misleading?

And you forgot to mention that Shanahan has had problems with franchise QBs in the past. Elway's no big fan.

I remember people saying that he was gonna revolutionize the position. Now he may be looking for a job next year. He's still young and talented so he will still get his chance.

He's not my first choice. But we're desperate. To get Mariota we're going to need to run the table. I don't see that happening. There's no other great alternative. Winston has huge baggage. As much as I would welcome Bradford, he's also a big question mark.

His results in 2012 were awesome. Last year he came off an injury and was ok. Not nearly what he was in 2012, but still ok. This year he's not bad. Better than what we have.

Winston did look great...I want to see him healthy....although I thought Mariota didn't play well last night both of them will be better options than RG3 here...players talk and his baggage may be too much here

I watched. He played very well. I saw him throw 3 TDs, 2 to wide open receivers and the 1 in the end zone was nicely done. But a rape accusation is not huge? Point shaving accusations?

How many interceptions has Winston thrown this year? What is his interception percentage? Generally, we can expect interceptions to increase in the NFL, we can't expect them to decrease.

I'd take RG3 over Winston -- as Rex often says "no question".
