Rich Gannon says Hackenberg's accuracy can be improved

It was the most common criticism of Christian Hackenberg coming out of Penn State, and the Jets' rookie quarterback didn't ease any concerns during his two preseason appearances.

Accuracy, or rather lack thereof.

In college, Hackenberg hit on just 56 percent of his throws. Against the Giants and Eagles this summer, he completed only 17 of 47 passes (36.2 percent). Ugly numbers, no doubt. But one former NFL great says Jet fans shouldn't be concerned with Hackenberg's early struggles.

"If I'm coaching a quarterback," Rich Gannon told NJ Advance Media at the NFL on CBS media day last week, "I believe I can make him more accurate."

Gannon played 17 seasons in the NFL for the Vikings (1987-1992), Redskins (1993), Chiefs (1995-1998) and Raiders (1998-2004). But it wasn't until 2000, his second season in Oakland, that he completed more than 60 percent of his passes.

While Gannon played in a different age, he said it takes time for a quarterback's accuracy to improve.

"Say I gave you a gun, and you and I went out to shoot skeets," Gannon, now an NFL analyst, said. "If I told you in three seconds, it's going to come up from that area right there, you'd see it, I'd pull, and you'd have your shot.

"Now, if I said that in three seconds, the skeets are going to come from either there, there, there, there or there, it would be a lot different."

Hackenberg needs experience, Gannon said, in order for his accuracy to get better. Right now, he's flustered. In time, he won't be focusing on everything, but just what he needs to see.

"When you're able to take the field and cut it in half based on your experiences," Gannon said, "It makes a huge difference. You can look at it and say, 'Oh, it's a high-low read. I need to throw it to the X [receiver] or in the flat.' Once that starts happening, your accuracy starts to get a lot better."

In 2001, Gannon completed 65.8 percent of his passes. In 2002, he completed 67.6 percent. He went from one of the league's most errant passers, to arguably its most accurate. And he believes Hackenberg can see similar improvements.

Hackenberg may never be a pin-point passer, but he can get better.

"When you're able to process information more quickly and efficiently," Gannon said, "that's when you're able to understand the personnel around you. Everything slows down, and completing those difficult passes isn't as hard."

"You're not going to take a guy that's a 50 percent passer, and make him hit on 70 percent. But I do believe you can see improvement.

i would feel more optimistic about gannon's take on hackenberg if he was/had personally worked with the kid..

just seems like an extremely general observation on an young inaccurate QB potentially getting better at it with time.....

I'd feel a lot more comfortable if it didn't take Gannon 14 years to complete over 60% of his passes. I don't think Hackenberg is going to get that much rope.

Hackenberg is only 21 years old. He is young for a draft pick, I'm willing to give him a couple of years on the bench and bringing him along slowly. Consider that Wentz is currently 24 years old, if Hackenberg doesn't play till his 3rd season, he would still be younger than what Wentz is today.

Hack is much more of a project than Petty.... Give Hack 2 years to learn and then see if he can battle for the starting spot 2018.... HE wont be ready next year

Yep. This could be Petty's team for the next few years, then have a proper QB competition when Hack is ready! If Fitz wants to hang around as a QB advisor, I'd be OK with that!

Hack like Petty last year needs to work on his pocket awareness, poise and footwork while he learns the playbook in and out... He has already built chemistry with Robby Anderson and come next off season will continue building chemistry with the rest of the receivers and build trust from the offensive line... This will help Hackenberg develop...

His confidence and trust is fractured... Looking back at his freshman season he played with a strong posture and trust that he o-line would give him the time to cycle through his progressions... He also had chemistry with his receivers that is why he looked so good not to mention his coach utilized everyone well... After his freshman season, the o-line was shit at best and his receivers were in the NFL... Is Hack a project not really just needs to take baby steps to get better...

We know he has the arm and when given time can throw a dime, so if he continues to work on these few things he in two years could be ready to start his career... Next year guarantee at worst he will be the #3, at best with a strong training camp could be the #2...

Well I am hoping Petty is #1 and he is #2 and 2018 will be a battle to start between the two

the very reason the Jets want Petty to continue to develop is the very reason they didn't place him on short term IR... some might say that it will stunt Hack's development... I don't think so, just look at Petty who was the #3 last year so no reps but progressed his body of work... Coach Patullo will work with both Petty and Hack so they will improve next off season...

When he was drafted by the Bears, Jack Concannon could (it was said) throw a football through a barn door, but couldn't hit the barn. Once he developed, he could hit the barn ... sometimes.
There's no guarantee that a poor percentage thrower will develop into a high percentage passer, no matter how much coaching he gets.

The thing about Hack that is so intriguing is that TD drive was a thing of beauty from an accuracy, placement and touch standpoint. When he needed to rifle the ball he did it, when he needed perfect placement it was there, and when he needed to float it perfectly in the corner of the EZ he did it. So it looks like he can do all that is necessary to be a great QB, it's just the balance of the preseason which scares the crap out of you and accentuates the need for his red-shirt year. He will probably need two, but I'm hopeful that he will be the one that we have been waiting for. [glass half full]
