I once read he spoke fluent Yiddish and learned by working in a mom-pop hardware store on Webster Ave. He would sometimes eavesdrop by some Yiddish speaking couple and report back their convo of what they're interested in.

New, I recently lost a friend who was the last captain of the CCNY basketball team under Nat Holman.
His name was Marty Groveman, with the sweet, soft, left-handed jumper. Another terrific guy who cared about others.
I spoke to one of my college friends last Sunday, and he remembered Powell stopping by our table in the City College cafeteria and talking with me.
