Miami Police Union Chief Javier Ortiz Tackled NFL Player Robby Anderson at Rolling Loud

Sportswriters are wringing their hands and moralizing over Robby Anderson, a New York Jets wide receiver who was arrested Sunday night at the Rolling Loud hip-hop festival. Anderson, 23, was booked on charges of resisting an officer with violence and obstruction; an arrest report New Times obtained claims Anderson had been arguing with security guards before getting into a physical altercation with a cop.

"Robby Anderson's arrest is the latest problem for Jets' receivers," an SB Nation headline read.

But the national press is missing which cop Anderson allegedly had a scuffle with: none other than Miami Lt. Javier Ortiz, the city's police union president, who has a long resumé of ethically dubious actions, excessive-force complaints, and even one tasing incident at another Bayfront Park music festival. That particular fiasco ended in Ultra Music Festival paying out a $400,000 legal settlement and Ortiz getting banned from the premises until he appealed.

This is also the second time Ortiz has arrested an NFL player. University of Miami legend Jonathan Vilma filed a complaint against Ortiz six years ago, claiming that in 2009, Ortiz went nuts on Vilma during a traffic stop, waved a gun in his face, screamed at him, and arrested him on false charges that were later dropped. (Vilma agreed to pay $1,000 to a hospital's trauma center.)

Ortiz did not respond to a message from New Times about his latest high-profile case.

Anderson has not yet spoken out about the incident and what happened Sunday night. But the cops allege Anderson was "fighting with security after being told to leave," and, after Ortiz told Anderson to sit down on the ground, the NFL star allegedly "tensed his body and pushed Lt. Ortiz."

Ortiz's report says Anderson, a 6'3", 180-pound NFL player, was "redirected to the ground and continued to fight with police and security." ("Redirected to the ground," in this instance, is likely code for "tackled" or "shoved.") He was eventually handcuffed and arrested.

[TWEET]861576454584147969[/TWEET]

Remarkably, the arrest comes barely a month after Ortiz regained his gun and the right to patrol the streets.

In March, the union chief was removed from active duty and stripped of his gun after a woman whom he'd doxxed — and encouraged his Facebook followers to harass — was granted a temporary restraining order against him. Per departmental policy, cops with active restraining orders against them are placed on desk duty until the order runs out. A county judge later declined to make Ortiz's stay-away ruling permanent.

The circumstances of Ortiz's latest headline-making case sound eerily similar to two past incidents in which Ortiz was accused of wrongdoing. In the Vilma case, the football star was charged with both resisting an officer with violence and obstruction of justice — the same infractions as Anderson.

Anderson's arrest also echoes Ortiz's infamous case at Ultra Music Festival in 2011. In that case, Jesse Campodonico, a 27-year-old fitness trainer from New York, was thrown to the ground and tasered by several officers, including Ortiz. Campodonico later sued, claiming excessive force; Ultra Music Festival eventually paid out a $400,000 settlement.

The cops on the scene claimed Campodonico was "yelling profanities, and had a strong scent of an alcoholic beverage,” and then “took a fighting stance and stated, 'I ain’t afraid of you!'” Ortiz wrote the arrest report, as well as a follow-up document called a Response to Resistance Report. He also testified, backing up his claims — but his fellow cops later provided testimony that conflicted with his own.

Then video emerged that someone had shot of the arrest, and the footage proved the events Ortiz depicted in his report could not have happened.

A local lawyer later filed a complaint about the alleged act of perjury with the Miami-Dade County State Attorney's Office. The state attorney admitted in writing that Ortiz's documents were full of "inconsistencies," but never prosecuted the union president for wrongdoing.

Ortiz was banned from Ultra but later mounted a legal fight for the right to work security at Ultra again. And for back pay for the festivals he'd missed.

And now, it appears Ortiz — who could, as union president, choose to drive around in circles and take the easy way out all day — has found himself in the thick of things yet again.

I am sure Anderson probably could have handled the situation a little better but after reading the article posted by GMF... I wouldn't be so quick to judge him so negatively.

FYI.... Have you all forgot, or maybe you guys are too young, a certain member of the 2000 NY JETS getting into a bar brawl and resisting arrest and and being charged disorderly conduct and resisting arrest..... you know another Undrafted WR, 2-3 years into his career and 26 years old... You know a guy named WAYNE CHREBET.... Let not crucify a kid that just turned 23 years old just yet...... Lets see all the facts come out first before we judge...

Looks like a 23 year old to me... But by all means lets judge a book by it's cover.
he absolutely does..

that said, his face & neck (in that mug shot) looks about right for 6'3" 180.. the kid looks gaunt..

not happy about that.. i was hoping the kid would put on a few pounds, not lose some..

Yeah I can agree with that.. He will be like Desean Jackson.... for his size I am surprised Jackson hasn't been injured more than he has.. Hopefully Anderson can stay healthy

Firm believer in innocent until proven guilty. I just wish these guys understood that they will be targeted by drunks and people looking to make a name for themselves. Just follow the orders of the police. They ask you to leave some place, just leave. Youre on the verge of being a millionaire. Is it worth it to act tough and ruin your life and the opportunity that so few are given?

Totally agree... and it sucks there celebrity makes them a target. They are human and it's not so easy taking the high road, every time. Hell I think I am pretty good guy in life but when I was in my early 20's I have had situations where I needed to turn the other cheek., Sometimes I have, sometimes I haven't. I would hope to think if i had millions of dollars riding on if I did or didn't, I would be able to walk away but i feel like that's easier said then done.

I totally agree with that... But this Officer has a checkered history and does not get the benefit of the doubt just because he is the law, he isn't above the law. He should be defusing the situation. Now what exactly happen we don't know yet, we will soon. And like I previously said Anderson certainly could have handled it better.

I don't condone Chrebet or Anderson doing dumb sh*t. It's just as stupid now as it was when Chrebet got caught up in that......

100% agree... My point simply is we are human. Chrebet never before and never after did anything dumb... Robby has never been in trouble before so lets not throw the baby out with the bath water.

It sucks cause you got a lot of guys that can't stay out of trouble for one reason or another. So it's easy to crucify Robby but right now it's just not fair... If something else happens.. Different story. Cut him and move on... We have a lot of young player at WR that would love the opportunity to step up and shine like Peake, Stewart, Hansen and maybe even this kid Cannon we just signed if he learned from his bonehead mistake with the Niners.

There is a slight difference with these two cases though. Chrebet had already established himself as a very good player that had been in the league for a while. Anderson has proven nothing other than he can catch the ball. He's also pulling this nonsense the very offseason after hid debut as an UDFA. We also have no idea if Anderson's body can handle the NFL? He's a pretty thin kid.

The action itself I don't condone from anyone any time. But Chrebet had already proven he had a playing career ahead of him, Anderson has not.......

I don't think whether he is a proven player or not has anything to do with the fact on how we judge him... If anything I think that makes the case to judge a 26 year old 4 year veteran harsher than it actually does to judge a 23 year old 2nd year player. I agree 100% with you. I do not condone the actions of Anderson or Chrebet. But their is no difference between both of them because one is an established veteran..

And Chrebet had 53.7 catch percentage as a rookie... Robby Anderson 53.8 %... Chrebet dropped passes as a rookie 8.... Anderson 4.... So your arguments are weak at best in comparing these guys on any level

If Anderson was baited by a cop with a history of baiting and escalating situations at festivals and with famous people, then fuck the cop. And if that is the case, I hope Anderson has a long and financially rewarding career, and spends a good amount of that money destroying this pussy on behalf of good cops everywhere.

What a bunch of nonsense. Catch percentage? Get a grip with that nonsense. Chrebet caught 66 passes in his rookie season. Those numbers proved he belonged in the game. The only thing Andersons 42 catches have proven is that the Jets want to see him gain weight and see if he can still be effective.

And whether you approve of how the world works is irrelevant. It's all about what have you done for me lately? That is a fact. Fairness consistently with two separate players is a fallacy.

Jets fans had fallen in love with Chrebet before his rookie season had even finished. Jets fans certainly like Anderson , but they don't like him like they liked Chrebet? Therefore, fair or unfair, the CS, fans, media will all treat Anderson worse for his misdeed than they treated Chrebet for his...
