Robby Anderson: Goal is to become “best receiver in the NFL”

Robby Anderson has put up good numbers in the past. He thinks he has an even brighter future.

The Jets wide receiver is ready to build on a strong finish to last season, even though the year as a whole represented a bit of a step back for him.

“That was a down year for me,” Anderson said, via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. “I know my capabilities. I know what I want to become . . . and that’s the best receiver in the NFL.”

That’s optimistic, but he certainly has shown signs of being a reliable target for Sam Darnold.

He caught 63 passes for 941 yards and seven touchdowns in 2017, and though his numbers were down across the board last year (50-752-6), he finished the season strong. In Weeks 14-16, he had 312 receiving yards and three touchdowns, showing a connection with Darnold that has led to optimism there.

That also comes with more responsibility, as new coach Adam Gase wants to expand Anderson’s role beyond running fast in a straight line.

“We’re just going to keep trying to think of ways to get him the ball, ways to create variety in his routes,” Gase said. “Instead of just doing one or two things, maybe we can open that thing up to five, six, seven things to where he’s a threat on multiple levels whether it be underneath, intermediate or down the field.”

If that happens, Anderson would certainly be closer to his goal.

This he will never be but he’s a decent receiver. I don’t even see him getting 1000 yards and over 70 catches this year. Reason is because of all the other weapons the Jets have now. Bell goes without saying. He’ll probably catch about 60 balls at the least. The other two running backs will catch abit. Our two young TEs, especially Herndon will catch quite abit. If Enunwa can stay healthy and Crowder plays as he did in Washington then the ball will be spread around quite abit to those two as well. Burnett might even get quite a few thrown his way. So Anderson will get his but he isn’t a force that will require 80 plus catches, 1000 plus yards and 10 tds or more. This just won’t happen because he’s not that type of player.

My goal is to get my wife to agree to an open marriage, start dating a supermodel, win the lottery, and grow more hair back similar to how it looked in my twenties.

See, both Robby and I have goals. And they’re both as likely to happen.

Lol, agreed! Majority of us married men have goals that really don’t include our wives and reliving our youths better then we once did. Reality is it ain’t going to happen just like Robby’s goals ain’t either.

I hope another goal of his is to stop fumbling/getting stripped of the f@ckin’ football.
And speech lessons wouldn’t hurt this kid either.
But I do hope he reaches his goal this year with the Jets. I’m rooting for ya RA.

Yeah, his speech or dialect is a major issue. You can tell he doesn't feel comfortable talking in front of a camera and probably very self-conscious about it and his speech issues. Hopefully that is just that, a speech impediment issue and not a show of his lack of intelligence. I mean he did go to college but then again, how many collegiate athletes are there strictly for their athletic talents and not for their scholastic achievements???

I love the whole let us knock Robby for working his way from UDFA to making an NFL roster to being one trick pony with questionable hands to a WR with now above average hands to a very good NFL Starting WR to now wanting to be the best. Robby Anderson may never be the best WR in the NFL but his hard work is unquestioned, his development is unquestioned and the fact this Kid gets better and better every year with questionable Offensive play calling, mismanagement of offensive talents and questionable QB's till a developing franchise guy came along should be reasons for us to root for him and encourage him to be the best. Personally I think if he keeps improving his route tree, like he has, and Sam developing, like we all believe he will, you will see some rockstar numbers from Robby. i could see him going for 75 catches 1200 yds and 9 tds .... maybe not the best numbers but I'll take that all day everyday.... I am rooting for this Kid.

Public speaking is very difficult for most people, some with an extreme phobia to it.
Anderson seems to always step up to speak with reporters good game or bad.
My comment was a bit of a shot at humor, but knowing he does step up to be interviewed, he could practice/coached up to speak a bit more fluidly.

RA is a good receiver. He’ll probably even deserve an extension. But I’m pumping the brakes on such lofty expectations. He’s a very good downfield option, and you need those guys. If he had Q’s size and toughness, he’d be in the conversation of greatness.

Agreed! IMO, Q is the one that has a chance for a huge jump in numbers and possible greatness and he did from day one in the league but he can NEVER stay healthy. That’s probably his only problem.

Or he could go play for Belichick and never drop a pass or fumble again. But you are right. Let's give him some credit
