If you’re an average Jets fan, then you most likely didn’t hear the name Robby Anderson too much early in training camp. But things are different now after his performance against the Redskins on Friday night as the undrafted rookie wide receiver led the team with six catches for 131 yards in a 22-18 loss. And after 42-yard touchdown from quarterback Bryce Petty and a 50-yarder from Petty, all of a sudden Anderson’s name is on everybody’s radar.

“My phone was going crazy,” he said of his friends and family's reaction to his breakout effort. “Everybody wanted to congratulate me and say how proud they were of me.”

The Temple product had one catch in the preseason opener against the Jaguars — a stark contrast from his second pro appearance. Anderson’s 131 receiving yards were the most for the Jets in the summer season since the 2008 preseason opener at Cleveland, when David Clowney had 163 yards on four catches.

“I take a lot of reps in practice against Darrelle Revis and Buster Skrine, so that’s been preparing me,” Anderson said after Sunday’s practice. “And I’m learning a lot from Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker, so I was more comfortable with the transition from game one to game two.”

Owl Roots

The wideout looked more cozy on the field as the game progressed and he even earned a hug from fellow Temple alum Todd Bowles after his TD reception in the fourth quarter.

“I feel like my earlier catches gave me a rhythm. They got me warmed up, got my confidence going, got me prepared and into the flow of the game,” he said. “When Coach hugged me, I told him to throw up the 'T'. It feels good to have someone that understands what you went through in college and comes from the same background as you.”

A Deer in Neon Headlights

Anderson, who wears neon green cleats during practice, sticks out like a sore thumb on the field. The lean 6’3”, 190-pounder runs so effortlessly he’s frequently referred to as gazelle-like.

“I’m pretty fast. I ran a 4.2, so being more explosive has never been hard for me. I was blessed with speed,” he said. “My agent gave me the cleats and I just think they drop ‘sauce’ and ‘swag,’ so I like them.”

The Floridian, who has been taking reps on Brant Boyer’s punt-coverage unit at gunner, is gearing up to do everything in his power to make the final roster.

“I just come in every day and focus on my craft and try to be the best I can be with every single rep that I take,” he said. “I want to learn everything possible, prepare in practice, so that I can be ready to go in the game. I’m just here to contribute as best as I can to the team.”

I just listened to the audio of MacCagnan with Francesa at Jets camp yesterday.

The one thing that really stood out too me in that interview was Mac's high praise for Robby Anderson. He was asked specifically, which young player has really impressed you in training camp, and he went off on Robby Anderson for a few minutes, essentially called him a UDFA heist.

IMO you don't speak that glowingly about a UDFA unless you've already decided to keep him on the 53, otherwise you want to sneak him thru waivers for the PS and thats not the way to do it, thats the way to insure that you lose him.

Happy to hear that. Hopefully we can stockpile and groom some of these young WRs, so they'll be ready when one of the young QBs is ready to take the reigns.

Robby Anderson, Jalin Marshall and Charone Peake at WR are absolute monster steals as 2 UDFA and a 7th rd pick.... I don't see any of them sneaking to the PS..... Marshall with all the hype could be the odd man out... WHY? He just doesn't Fit the mold of a Chan Gailey WR... BUt my guess is they all make the team.

WR's on the roster this year will be B Marshall, E. Decker, Q Enunwa, R. Anderson, C. Peake and J Marshall....

Devin Smith may never see the field as a Jet again... BUt that will depend on how the 3 young kids play as rookies... I am hyped for all of them but reality says 1 maybe 2 will pan out.. So we shall see but I like what they are showing so far.

Mac also said he is looking at other teams rosters, where they have excess and if that position matches a Jets need, and if our excess matches the other teams needs. For example, the Bengals have excess at OT with Whitworth, Winston, Ogbuehi and Jake Fisher, but they are thin at WR after AJ Green, having lost both Marvin Jones and Sanu to free agency, and they don't have a burner on the roster either. It seems to me the Jets and Bengals are a good match. Maybe we can send Devin Smith to Cinci for one of those Tackles, preferably Ogbuehi or Fisher. Maybe we throw in a mid to late round pick if that completes the deal. Also Devin played his college ball at Ohio State, so he's a popular hometown kid.

I just don't seee anyone trading for a guy on the PUP coming off an ACL... They may want J Marshall, C Peake or R Anderson.. Nope, Nope, Nope

ACL's are not what they used to be. The surgery has gotten so advanced over the past ten to twenty years that its almost like giving these kids a new knee, not unlike TJ surgery in baseball. These things used to be career threatening injuries, but now, a year later and the player is like new, especially a young player like Smith.

The way I see it, if Cinci liked him in the draft two years ago, and I recall some rumors that they wanted to take him in the 2nd RD if he had fallen to them there, then the odds are they still like him now, especially with a much bigger need at WR now than they had two years ago. But I do agree that we probably have to compensate for the injury by throwing in a draft pick for one of their young OT's, Ogbuehi or Fisher. Probably not for a veteran if its Whitworth, although he is their best OT and he would be a huge upgrade at RT if we can get him (can also start at LT if necessary), which is possible if they want to open up starting spots for the both of their young OT's whom they think highly of, but if its one of the young guys we probably have to offer Smith and a pick, and I'm okay with that. I would do it, even for Smith and a 3.

Hopefully Robby Anderson fares better than Stevie Anderson who had a few big preseason games with the jets decades ago and never really amounted to anything. He definitely has a skillset that no other player, besides maybe Devin Smith, fills on the Jets.

By the way, I would love to see that Trade GJ&H. Not that I think Smith is worth giving up on, but we could use help at other positions. Anthony Davis of the 49ers and Ron Leary of the Cowboys are two other lineman I would be calling about.

ACL's aren't what they used to be but Devin Smith is not gonna be traded for coming off an ACL..... Maybe an AJ Green or a Dez Bryant would but not an unoproven kid that struggled his rookie year and then tore his ACL..... NOT one GM in the NFL or hell even CFL would trade for Smith....... Not happening... Beleive me I wish we could trade him and get something in return since these young kids are lookinf 1000000000000 times better than Smith looked in Pre season last year... But he looked terrible in pre season.. he looked awful in the reg season... He had an injury before his rookie camp, got injured in the reg season....

Honestly ask yourself would you trade for him?

anderson, peake & j. marshall should make the final 53.. if that means cutting JAG thompkins & or a useless FB, TE or QB, so be it.. my take anyway..

Agreed, but thats where the GM comes in, he has to make sure we keep our best 53 players even if it unbalances the roster a little bit. The HC thinks short term, but the GM has to counterbalance him and think longterm. George Young, for example, constantly overruled Parcells on setting the roster. He never interfered with coaching, but he felt like the roster is the GM's purview and it usually is. Thats partly why Parcells left the Giants and then the Patriots, all of that "shop for the groceries" stuff, but in retrospect he has admitted he was wrong, that wearing two hats is too much for the HC, its better to have a GM doing GM things, provided he's competent.

That said, I really believe Bowles will try to keep Thompkins at the expense of Anderson, Peake or Jalin, its to Mac to make sure he doesn't do that. Mac has to pull rank and say we're keeping the young WR's.

Kenbrell Thompkins has some value could be one piece used to make a move... Kenbrell has flashed some Marvin Jones (ex-Bengal) which could intrigue them to pull the trigger... The one name that no-one wants to mention in trade talks is Jace Amaro, which could seal the deal in acquiring much needed parts... No way we get Fisher or Ogbuehi but Winston would be an ideal short term solution... Throw in Rex Burkehead and we be set...

Jets would be foolish to part with any of the three rookies... Devin Smith still could be moved but would have to be at the trade deadline (if he comes off the PUP)...

& both bowles & maccagnan should be held accountable if bowles wants/gets tompkins (hell, geno smith as well) over anderson, peake or j. marshall..

good, bad right or wrong.. it gets late very early in the NFL..

Nice fluff piece on Anderson

Jets long shot Robby Anderson finds his new beach ... and it's chill

Robby Anderson had six catches for 131 yards and a touchdown in the Jets' preseason loss to the Redskins. Brad Mills/USA TODAY Sports
9:21 AM ET
Rich Cimini

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- In 2014, Robby Anderson scored touchdowns in his mind as he ran sprints on the sandy shore of the lake at his apartment complex in Orlando, Florida. He wanted to be in Philadelphia, catching passes for his school, Temple, but his season played out near Disney World. It was no Fantasy Land.

Anderson, who flunked out of Temple because of bad grades, regained his eligibility that year by earning an associate's degree from Valencia Community College in Orlando. He went an entire season without football, focusing on school and training near the apartment he shared with his mother. If he wasn't on the beach, running, he was in the gym.

"It was a humbling experience," he said this week. "I really feel like that year, that's what molded me into a man. ... Sometimes you have to lose it all to appreciate it when it comes back."

Anderson has become one of the feel-good stories of the New York Jets' summer. Undrafted in April, the 6-foot-3 speedster leads the NFL in receiving yards (138) for the preseason. He exploded for six catches, 131 yards and a touchdown last Friday against the Washington Redskins, adding his name to the conversation for the final few roster spots.

The Jets figured to carry six wide receivers, maybe seven, and Anderson is competing with Jeremy Ross and fellow rookies Charone Peake and Jalin Marshall for the final two or three spots. They could try to put Anderson on the practice squad, but it will be hard to slip him through waivers, especially with his gaudy numbers.

When teams evaluate developmental players, they look for rare traits, stuff that can't be taught. Anderson has size and electric speed; he ran under 4.4 seconds in the 40 at his pro day. He might be the fastest player on the Jets. Asked if he is, he shrugged his shoulders and said, "I hope so."

"I think he showcased that (speed) a little bit in the game; he does every day on the practice field," quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said. "He’s got really good hands. His hands aren’t enormous, but he’s just got soft hands, he brings everything in. The (42-yard) touchdown catch that he made over the defender, I thought he made it look easy and that’s kind of what jumped out to me. He made such a difficult catch look like an easy one. He’s got a good little swagger to him that I hadn’t really seen that you see in games come out a little bit."

Anderson is rail-thin at 190 pounds and his route running needs polish, but he definitely has tools. You know the hunger is there; a lot of players wouldn't have made it back from a season away from football. He was so determined to resume his career that he moved away from his hometown, Ft. Lauderdale, seeking a fresh start in Orlando. His mother, a nurse, landed a job there, too, so it seemed like the right fit.

"Before that happened, when I was still in school, I thought I was a young man. I thought I knew everything," he said, reflecting on the root of his academic troubles. "I'm a very intelligent person, but I wasn't applying myself. It humbled me and it taught me a lot. I feel like it made me a better person."

Back at Temple last season, Anderson showed his potential, finishing with 70 receptions for 939 yards and seven touchdowns. His signature game was against Houston, a 12-catch, 150-yard performance in which he was covered by William Jackson, who would be drafted in the first round by the Cincinnati Bengals.

That was big, but last week's game against the Redskins was bigger.

"It's a huge accomplishment, coming from where I came from," said Anderson, who lived in Teaneck, New Jersey, until he was 3. "I've always had this dream since I was young. People are proud to see I stuck with it. I never gave up."

I love the idea of trading some of our apparent wealth at WR for an OT. After all, if this offense goes bad this season it will all start and end on the right side of the OL. Although I really believe we need a RT and a RG, I am sure Brian Winters could fill in satisfactorily just as he did last season and the Jets offense took off for the first time in years.

MArshall is 32 and Decker 29... Nope not trading the young talent at WR....Plus I think the OL needs to see what we have in Ben or Qvale on the right side and Winters improved a lot last year deserves the shot to continue... He was more than adequate last year and signs show he will be better this year... I do agree our right side could be an issue but I think I rather see if we have improved as indicators are showing before we give up one of these young promising WR's

I disagree. Hell, we don't even need to trade that is currently playing. Devin Smith would be my suggestion. Albeit in an injury shortened season, Devin Smith demonstrated being brittle and having the dropsies........

As stated before no one is trading for an unproven 2nd year wr; that showed nothing in his 1st year; that was injured before training camp and missing all his rookie year OTA's and was awful in training camp and in the reg season until he tore his ACL in the season...and has done nothing in his 2nd training camp after missing all OTA's again.

Would you deal a talented T for that player just described?

I can see your point on disagreeing with my thoughts on our RT situation and Winters... that's fair but seriously like I said no GM in the NFL or even the CFL will trade for Smith while recovering from an ACL injury...

Believe me if MAcc can pull that off a trade for a starting T that is better than anything we have now I would gladly eat crow and do an irish jig for a whole day....
