With the wide-9, Jets defensive front seven will look more like a traditional 4-3 with three stack linebackers operating more in space. This allows them to be far more interchangeable with each other, something the personnel on this team are not accustomed too.

The Jets will also be able to employ more Cover 2 schemes, with both safeties dropping back in coverage. This should help negate some of the massive coverage gaffes with utilizing young core of corners. Problem is the safeties are assigned a role not playing over top of any said corner.

Up front, where the measurable change takes place, Carl Lawson was to be the primary player to benefit from the wide-9 alignment. He’ll be allowed to operate more in space, either dealing solely with a blocking tight end or forcing the right tackle to pull away from his guard support, thereby opening up more pass-rushing opportunities on the interior. Where Q, JFM or Rankins would be able to beat their one on one blocking assignments.

If all this sounds like a no-brainer poised to revolutionize the Jets defense, don’t get too excited.

here are cons, too:

With as many as eight defenders in the box in Robert Saleh’s previous 4-3 Under, Cover 3 scheme, one of the best reasons to use it was to stop the run.

Bumping the strong-side EDGE outside the right tackle helps set the edge contain on outside runs, yes. In turn, it also pushes back two would-be tacklers at the line of scrimmage: the SAM linebacker and strong safety.

Both those positions are now playing further off ball, meaning an outside runner will have a slightly better shot to get around his defender and pick up more yardage.

But where the difference will likely be felt more is on inside runs. The simple observation would be the increased gap between the strong-side EDGE and defensive tackle.

That’s true, and one might expect opposing teams to target this area. Yet the real difference could be felt by the linebackers, who’ll be asked to do a lot more run stopping and gap control.

This is why the Jets will invest a lot in their linebacking corps during the offseason, and it also helps explain why depth will be a key issue here throughout the year. CJ Mosley is being asked to do more than he is accustomed too, he is a great run defender who lost 20 pounds to be more quicker in the new 4-3 defense but he still is a liability in coverage which may concern the coverage assignment over the middle.

If Jets stays healthy at its second level, the wide-9 adjustment should be beneficial. After all, it’s better suited to a pass-heavy league, and interior runs have become far less frequent with teams going away from traditional fullbacks and lead blockers.

Wide 9 technique is an alignment and technique designation for defensive linemen. A wide 9 technique player is often a speed pass rusher, who aligns well outside the offensive tackle, or even outside the tight end. This player uses pure speed and agility to get to the quarterback.

Quinnen Williams, Sheldon Rankins are premier options in Saleh's 4-3 scheme...
Folorunso Fatukasi showed glimpses of success with his win rate ratio early but as of late has been off...
Nathan Sheperd also had some win rate ratio early but as of late has been eatin up inside...
Jonathan Marshall is still learning his technique and seems to be hitting that rookie wall...

Two players to watch that would fill the void via the draft would help or lining up with Q. bring stability to this Fab 4 upfront on the interior are Perrion Winfrey from OU and/or Haskell Garret from OSU... One other is DeMarvin Leal but he likely gone in the Top 25...

I would retain Fatukasi even on a short term extension, he is relatively young and is known for his run defense... He shown he can make plays behind the line of scrimmage, tackles for loss...

Jonathan Marshall will need a full off season to determine his role next year if he has one on the active roster...

Rankins is under contract and is considered Quinnen's relief or role player...

Fatukasi moving forward should be considered the other relief guy and we need to find that comparable starter next to Q. ...

As for defensive ends, they will need to improve their pass rush skill sets, both Shaq Lawson and Bryce Huff have potential in this alignment but are limited in their perspective pass rush moves... Both should be considered No. 2 or role players for actual starters... Carl Lawson was to be one and the other was going to be more of a group based substitutions throughout snap count...

Free agency has plenty of former Saleh players and players that have connection to Joe Douglas that are 4-3 players that could come in and thrive at an affordable price tag... Opens the door for the Jets to draft someone, but not a major need more of a luxury pick... There are options that would be improvements on both Bryce Huff and Shaq Lawson but will need to be developed... There also players/prospects that have the technique but off the field questions... Will be fun to see who they target but as of right now not a glaring need to take the best EDGE in the draft but would be a luxury which we are not ready to have at this moment in time...

Haskell Garrett Ohio State lining up next to Q. would be a steal of a draft selection, currently a 4th round rated:

Great write up! The loss of Lawson really impacted a lot of what they were trying to do on defense this year, and then losing Maye hasn't helped at all.

Love to see the Jets pickup a stud Edge Rusher in the draft! Praying Lawson comes back healthy, but he has an injury history and you can never have too many edge rushers LOL

I keep saying this because I really believe he could be a big part of our d line going forward and solve the EDGE DE role for the immediate future former first round pick Derek Barnett from the Eagles will be an UFA this off season and has those ties to Joe Douglas making him a prime target for us... His fit is a 4-3 DE (EDGE) only 25 years old...

Sign Derek Barnett allows the team to draft someone in the later rounds...
Bryce Huff has similar makeup to Barnett and could actually learn from D.B. ...
Shaq Lawson can feed off someone like Barnett on the opposite side as he did in San Fran...
Tim Ward is the curious other, can be replaced by a day 3 EDGE guy in this year's draft...

Carl Lawson at best may return next year around week 10... And if not he won't be back until the 2023 season...
