How could signing this guy not be a big thing?! A mauler at guard with the versatility to move outside to tackle. Hey Grote, do you remember Weeb moving big Dave Herman outside to replace a rookie tackle ( Sam Walton ) in the 68' Super Bowl ? He completely shut down big Bubba Smith?

I was only 12 at the time and not really. You may be right, and I do recall some sort of maneuvering on the OL but not sure. Why wouldn't Winston Hill have been assigned to Smith?

Not sure of the particulars either but I go remember liking Herman a lot.

seems like a decent pickup. bowles should be familiar with him having faced him in division the last few years. like most, would have preferred iupati or franklin, but we can't force players to sign here. at the least, it should spell the end of the willie colon era. appreciate the toughness he brought, and he was a local kid, but the game has passed him by.

Interesting. Did they like this guy better than Boling? I would have Boling rated higher but who knows. The thing about Carpenter is the ceiling is high with him. How much does he want it though. He's probably underperformed so far in his career. My guess is this is the kind of player that Bowles feels he can get the most out of. He can push his buttons. This is where a great coach makes all the difference. Cowher was a master at it.

As was Parcells, and Bowles is from his tree.

Winston played LT and was instrumental in opening up gaping holes for Snell/Boozer in that SB. BTW , I was 19.

Jets to fortify offensive line with Seattle’s James Carpenter
By Brian CostelloMarch 10, 2015 | 8:07am

The Jets appear to have addressed one glaring hole on their roster in the hours before free agency begins.

The team and free-agent guard James Carpenter have agreed to a deal, according to a Fox Sports report. A contract cannot be signed until 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Carpenter, 25, was a first-round pick of the Seahawks in 2011 out of Alabama. He started 39 games for Seattle over the past four years, including 13 last year.

Carpenter, listed at 6-foot-5 and 321 pounds, played tackle originally for the Seahawks, but moved inside after he struggled in pass protection. The website Pro Football Focus, which analyzes game tape, said Carpenter has struggled as a run blocker over the past few years.

The Jets were in need of a starting guard with third-year players Oday Aboushi and Brian Winters as the only guards with starting experience under contract. They are expected to let Willie Colon leave as a free agent.

The Jets made runs at Mike Iupati and Orlando Franklin, the top two guards on the market, but missed on both. Iupati reportedly will sign with the Cardinals. Franklin reportedly is headed to the Chargers.

I'd much rather have a guy that's better in pass protection than run blocking with what we want to do in the NFL today. Especially when trying to groom a QB. He didn't allow a sack last year and that sounds great but Russel Wilson is also great at avoiding. Still think it's a solid signing especially if they use the money they saved to get other players.

Can't really say I know anything about the guy, but he's big enough. Didn't like the line that he's struggled in run blocking.

Other then that I'm really glad to see they got something done. He's very young, so at his size maybe he can be coached up. He better, he's going to be lining up with Suh twice a year

Good point. I think Revis/Cro or Culliver/Cro is a foregone conclusion with the money we have to spend. Probably Revis with his love of money.

How about 2 of the 3??

This is what I was saying. Either Revis and Cro together or Culliver and Cro.

I think Cro is a slam dunk and am already counting him in. The question is whether Revis or Culliver is the first to accept the Brinks truck into their driveway and join him.

You're right, I may be jumping the gun.
As for "conditioning", I'm merely repeating what seems to be the prevailing term used to describe Carpenter which is unfair in that it's more accurately been a litany of inuries that have derailed him.

Thanks for the links. Not knowing much about him I must say your first post alarmed me a bit. The links have put me at ease. Looks like a good under the radar signing.

I love ya blast, but this is the thing that frustrates me about Jets fans, especially after last years free agency debacle, how can you guys who preach patience still not understand the dynamics of free agency and how it works? Fact of the matter is, setter is right, you don't have till next week in free agency, by next week you will walk into the store and the only thing left on the shelves will be the shit nobody wanted. This (free agency) game is played at WARP SPEED, and if you can't keep up you get steamrolled. Before you even know what hit you, you are stampeded into road-kill. Patience is not a virtue in NFL free agency, its a recipe for disaster. This game requires extreme aggressiveness, decisiveness and speed.

Bottom line: the fans who have a sense of urgency are right, thats the proper mentality in free agency and its the attitude your GM needs too. Calm and laid back doesn't work here. Its BALLS TO THE WALL, cause these other GM's, the more savvy and ruthless ones, would step over a guy with a heart attack to sign their top targets the moment that bell rings.

LOL

I know how intense you are Ham, but c'mon relax a bit. When I first read Jet setter's post, not knowing anything about the guy, I started to panic, after reading some about the guy, he may be the best OG out there.

Looks to me at this point a nice signing. Young, huge, seems to have learned and improved, good upside. I'm good
