HC Saleh & DC Ulbrich's game plan is quite genius needing linebackers to excel in coverage is rare but their answer is taking safeties and converting them to linebackers allows the defense more flexible on every down... Not to mention the ample of disguises they will be able to create each and every week...

I don't think this is anything new . Didn't the Cardinals under Arians with Todd Bowles as DC turned a former college and NFL safety into a linebacker which was basically the emphasis for drafting Adams .

Adams played in the box... Drafting Safeties and day 1 changing their position to linebacker is unusual in this league but there were combo guys like Cam Chancellor's of the Seahawks Deone Bucannon of @butterscotch Cardinals that either during their careers converted from saf to lb or stayed in the fringe of those 2 positions...

IF our Defensive Line and Mosley can stop the run our converted safeties can protect against the short and medium passes. Could be a helluva Defense.

so true & Simmons now again plus our new draft pick. Will they be an Adams in a box or a Jack in the box?......only time will tell

On draft day, some thought that we should have gone for LB, but it seems that this may have been a better plan. The LB that are around on the third day tend to have flaws - often speed, cover ability and the like.

These safety/LB types could work out. My top hope is that they work in certain packages - say at "LB" in passing situations. They may help with specific matchups - the growing number of alleged "TE" who are more like big WR. Cant cover those guys with most LBs.

Best case, is that one or more develops to the point where they play a lot - but if all we get from them is strong situational play - AND if the coaching staff uses them wisely - I feel good about those picks as an approach to meeting needs

I believed it was the way Bucannon played that was the inspiration for Bowles wanting Jamal Adams

I think a linebacker's weight shouldn't be much of an issue to long time fans of the Jets.
Larry Grantham was listed at (IIRC) 215 pounds. And when he played in SB III (according to writer Dave Anderson) he was around 205 pounds.
Just sayin'.
If you younger folks don't remember Larry, look up at the Jets ring of honor. His # 60 is up there.

I'm really intrigued by what gif's, the starter of this thread, is pointing out.

All these late draft, super athletic, safety/lb/cb's seem like Saleh is trying to recreate what Seattle did when he was on staff and they created the "legion of boom" with similar late round picks.

I remember reading an article back then about how unique it was for them to hit on all those late round hybrid DB's. It's true as others have noted here that other coaches like Ariens and Bowles have tried coping that but we have a new head coach who saw it happen as it was first created. Man, that gives me hope!
