Free agent quarterback Mark Sanchez is going back to the Philadelphia Eagles on a two-year deal with a maximum value of $16 million, $5.5 million of which is guaranteed, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Sunday.

Sanchez, 28, signed a one-year contract with the Eagles last offseason after being released by the New York Jets.

After being a first-round pick, earning the nickname "The Sanchize" with trips to the AFC Championship Game in each of his first two seasons, Sanchez injured his throwing shoulder during the 2013 preseason and was replaced by rookie Geno Smith.

Sanchez felt that playing in Eagles coach Chip Kelly's offense would help get his career back on track, and his gamble paid off. While Nick Foles was unquestionably the Eagles' No. 1 quarterback, Sanchez had a strong preseason and was ready when Foles broke his clavicle during the Eagles' Week 9 game in Houston.

Sanchez finished that game, a victory, and started the Eagles' final eight games. He completed a club record 64 percent of his passes (198 for 309), for 2,418 yards. Sanchez threw 14 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions.

His record as a starter was 4-4. After leading the Eagles to their 33-10 defeat of Dallas on Thanksgiving Day, Sanchez was the quarterback for the three-game losing streak that knocked them out of the playoff picture.

For Sanchez, the season met his goals of helping him bounce back from his ouster in New York. It also may have exposed his limitations as a starting quarterback.

ESPN.com Eagles reporter Phil Sheridan contributed to this report.

Wow

The plot thickens. Not sure how to interpret this. Does this mean the rumor about Kelly trading up for Mariota is BS? I can't imagine why Sanchez would sign with the Birds if he wasn't assured he would have a chance to compete for a starting job. He knows if Kelly gives up the draft, and a part of next years for Mariota, Sanchez is at best a place holder till Mariota is ready.

If he was told he will have achance to compete with Foles, and feels he can beat him Maybe

Foles is on the move. There are a lot of rumors going around about his next team now. The hot rumor is Texans.

I believe Foles is done in Philly, Kelly was clearly annoyed with his poor play before the injury. I just don't see why Sanchez would re-sign there unless he feels he can be the starter.

A few teams were talking to Sanchez, where he might have a competition, then suddenly Philly jumped back into the picture.

IMO something changed. Clearly Kelly is loading up for a Super Bowl run. Does he really think Sanchez can do that? Or Mariota is going to be ready for that this year?

Strange days indeed. Must say Kelly is making things interesting in the off season for Jets fans

Strange way to load up for a super bowl run?!?!?! Get rid of your entire secondary, your best player (McCoy), and your best WR (Maclin). They now have no QB, RB, or WRs...other than #3 Matthews who is a slot who struggled with press coverage last year.

Do you look at the offense led by Matthews, Riley Cooper, and Sanchez/Mariota and think Super Bowl run? I dont think they even make the play-offs next year.

I agree he doesnt like Foles, except I dont think it started last year. He inherited Foles from Ried and never really gave him a shot to beat out Vick the year before. He handed the keys to Vick and only played Foles when he was desperate. I think he never liked Foles; if he did, after getting Chip to the play-offs his first year an extension would have been given...it was never even a thought.
