Say hello to a base 4-3 defense

We kept NINE D-linemen and cut Polite.

So please let's end the charade ... we're switching to a base 4-3

Not saying we won't play some 3-4, we did keep seven LB's and that's a lot too, but IMO base 3-4 teams don't carry 9 DL's.

Heck, even teams that run a base 4-3 rarely carry as many as nine D-linemen.

Now I like the way we kept it under wraps all summer, it was very Belichicken, but 9 DL's means the gig is up.

Sounds good to me but I’m guessing the three starting LBs will be Mosely, Jenkins and who???

My best guess is Cashman.

From reading his bios he's always been a terrific talent who would have been drafted much higher, but too many injuries damaged his grade.

That said, by all accounts the coaches really like this kid and I wouldn't be surprised if he starts the opener, and he's a tailor-made 4-3 OLB.

Sounds good to me. Next question would be who is going to be our four starting dline men? Now it’s obvious it’s gonna be Q and L Williams, Anderson and I’m guessing McClendon. Al these guys are 300 plus pounders. Who exactly are we expecting to be our edge rushes out of these four? Q. Williams seems to be more of a interior pass rusher. Same thing with L. Williams.

I think this scheme suggests that we are going to aim to hold the edge and pressure up the middle. The sort of scheme that tends to work best against the Pats. Hmmm.

Edge pressure may need to come off blitz and stunt. We just dont have a prototypical edge rusher - so we are who we are.

We didnt trade for Clowney....Polite didnt work out....so we play with what we've got. I suppose one can even make the argument that edge rushers are at such a premium now that chasing them in the draft or trade is too costly and inside pressure is the play

If it works then whatever it takes. What would truly be nice is IF and I say IF they had two true pass rushing defensive ends that could play those edge rushing positions. We then could use Q and L. Williams as the starting interior lineman. Problem is finding a 260-285 pound true pass rushing edge rusher isn’t easy. Edge rushers like Khalil Mack, J.J Watt, Joey Bosa and Demarcus Lawrence etc-etc don't just grow off trees. The Jets have a few dline men that fit in that weight scheme but they obviously aren’t true edge rushers or they would be the starters. If they do switch to the 4-3 then we’ll work with what we have and hopefully it all works out.
