Schefter believes Sam Darnold will be the team’s QB

“I would be surprised if Sam Darnold is not the starting quarterback for the Jets next season,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Thursday evening. “Robert Saleh believes in Darnold. Joe Douglas believes in Darnold.”

The NY Jets have officially hired a new head coach in former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. And with that hire, the speculation has shifted to the future of quarterback Sam Darnold.

After the head coach decision, the Jets’ next big decision will come with what they decide to do at the quarterback position. Do they keep Darnold or look to start over in the draft?

Over the coming months, there will be no more exhausting discussion, but one very notable source believes that the hiring of Saleh means that the Jets will ultimately be sticking with Darnold after all.

Soon after the Saleh news broke, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said that he believed this hire indicated that Darnold would return.

The logic behind his opinion comes with the man that Saleh will be bringing in as his new offensive coordinator, former 49ers passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur.

The brother of Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur is a Kyle Shanahan disciple who’s expected to run a very similar offensive scheme to that of Shanahan’s in San Francisco.

That means more play-action, an emphasis on getting players in space, and lots and lots of speed. Think of it as an enhanced West Coast offense modernized for today’s NFL.

But what does this have to do with Darnold?

My guess is it has to do more with the QB talent (after Lawrence) available in this years class then it does Darnold. Extra picks this year and next. 3 first in 2022 puts them in position to move up for a QB if necessary.

I’m good with it. Yes I wanted them to draft Fields being that Lawrence isn’t an option anymore but you gotta trust in the new CS and Joe D and I will. They will most likely give Sam this last year to show and prove something and if he doesn’t than move on. He’s only 23 years old and there is a chance of him improving. Although slim there still is a chance. They build the team around him correctly and who knows what he can do!

His skill set may be as good as any of the non-Lawrence QBs in the draft for what LaFleur will want to do. Have him rolling out a lot, play action. It seems worth it to give him a shot in a system that works to his strengths, and see if he can put the past behind him. If not, then you move on.

You can keep Darnold and draft a QB this year. There is zero trade market for Darnold so it makes since to let him try to win the job with a draft pick. If he wins it and resurrects his career he can be traded or the drafted QB can be developed and traded. We are in a great position.

for Darnold to succeed we need some luck in the early schedule. we need to start the season with the 4 games tompabay ended the season with. Vikings, Detroit and Atlanta twice. we cant draw superbowl winning tompabay, buffalo twice and KC to start the season.

Since Darnold arrived here, he has started the season against teams that assured his failure every year. every single year. we need to start the season with some winnable games. winning begets winning. losing begets losing. all morning I have listened to wfan. the talk has been about the Jets , but whenever anyone made their playoff picks, and this goes for anything I heard all week, everyone picked tompabay to win becausr they were so much better in the last 4-5 games. they scored 30 some points on average. no one mentioned the suckiness of the teams that they beat up. anyway. point is, we need to have some tombrady luck. an easy schedule, a tuckrule call in our favor, something, anything. it has to be our turn

Lefluer like to run PA....... Sam sucks at PA. Worst rating in the league in PA pass attempts. Lets get over Sam because its either Fields or Wilson at 2. Wilson actually comes from a PA program at BYU, and trust me, he is damn good at it (live in Utah and watched a lot of his games this year)

If Darnold does stay they must draft Devonta Smith AND sign Robinson. Go all in for Sam for a change. Give this kid a chance. I know I've been critical of Sam but with the current situation I would rather go with Sam than take a chance on what could be a worse situation.

Get Allen Robinson and/or DeVonta Smith, make sure Denzel Mims gets a full off season getting in football shape... Decide if Jamison Crowder is in the future plans or target another slot guy in round 3 or 4 in Dazz Newsome from UNC... Braxton Berrios has more than one job on the team so he is keeper for now...

DS is now finally being talked to be the 3rd receiver coming off the board because Chase is more of vertical threat desired by many teams while another Tyreke Hill is in this draft coming off an ankle injury expected to make a full recovery in Jaylen Waddle who prior to last season was the real candidate for the Heisman before DeVonta came on scene with his crisp route running ability and catching the ball if he was already in the NFL toe tapping two feet on the sideline catches...

our OL is far from rebuilt but is stable now with Becton at LT... Wonder about Clark, and if we will draft anyone to continue to restructure...

Thank Goodness the Gore experiment is over, Josh Adams is a RFA doesn't mean the team will tender him, so that leaves two running backs and they are good together but we need someone that can be a featured back, if Najee Harris falls to 2nd round then that 34 pick is perfect...
