Season in review: What went wrong

Adam Gase's first season was weird. The Jets won six of their last eight to finish 7-9, averting total disaster, but they did it against the NFL's easiest schedule. Beware of fool's gold. The team, unable to cope with Sam Darnold's three-game illness, was out of contention by Halloween. The offense, under Gase's direction, was non-competitive until it perked up in November. Injuries were a factor on both sides of the ball. The defense adjusted, the offense not as much. Somehow, Gase held the team together when it sank to 1-7, but he must do a better job in several areas. Darnold improved, but he didn't make the big, second-year leap that was expected. The pressure will be on him and Gase in 2020.

Biggest offseason question:

Can first-year GM Joe Douglas save the Jets? Yeah, it's a broad question, but the hopes of this moribund franchise rest on him. His first order of business is making decisions on running back Le'Veon Bell (possible trade), wide receiver Robby Anderson (free agent) and safety Jamal Adams (possible trade or contract extension). Ideally, you'd like to keep all three, but economics play a big role. Predictions: Adams stays, Bell and Anderson do not. Douglas must focus heavily on the offensive line decimated by injuries and age. The Jets never will get an accurate read on Darnold until they put a capable line in front of him. Don't be surprised if they have four new starters in 2020.

They also had one of the league's toughest schedules in the first half of the season, when they were dealing with some of their big issues, from mono to injuries to a new system to a horrid OL.

Here is some food for thought:

Unlike Tannehill or Cutler, Darnold stood up to Gase and told him we have to work together to succeed... Told him what he was comfortable with and started to work out as they finished the season on a 6 - 2 run... Gase is a buffoon we all know that, he also is too involved into his idea what or how an offense should be but the second half of the season I think he had an epiphany to what the run game can do to help out this offense that had so many injuries to the line... Not to much Bell, but Bilal Powell and what he brought to the table... Then when he started to utilize Bell as a receiver he noticed the matchups he can develop for this offense moving forward...

With a healthy roster, offensively speaking and a QB that is not passive wanting to succeed not just want to fill the position, a couple draft selections some free agency signings and some re-signings of current players this offense may take off next season... Best move by JD will be depth at all positions...

We have to keep Gregg Williams, and believe he wants to be here... Mosley comes back healthy, add another corner and depth across the board we should return and continue growing as a team, let's hope...

Four new "O" linemen ( Quality ) will go a long ways toward the team taking that next step combined with getting our defensive starters healthy and adding another CB and Edge Rusher in the off season. Darnold's decision making and accuracy isn't where it should be but with new front 4 maybe he can fix that during the off season. Team overall has improved but there is still a lot of work to do before we can really call them competitive.

What went wrong?
Hiring Adam Gase
The prior GM never addressed the O line and killed the cap so the new one couldn't.
Sam's mono
Injuries
Hiring Adam Gase (it cannot be said too often or too strongly)

cheatahs actually had the easiest schedule in football and they looked bad yet still finished 12-4. I'm gonna look it up, but I'm thinking that the only team with a winning record that they beat was Buffalo and so did we

titans and Eagles 9-7. best teams they beat lost to the 3 AFC division winners. had their schedule order been the same as ours they probably would have done worse. a few things swing differently in a few of our games and a few of there games, and we are a lot closer. still feel like we stink outside of the defense

the best we beat outside of the Bills was 8-8 Steelers and Cowboys. not too much different

I think the Pats schedule was harder than the Jets. Texans and Chiefs for them vs Raiders and Jags for us . We had nearly no travel. Finished the back half vs mostly shit teams. (4.75) winning pct.
We lucked out with the Raiders at home, Dallas with both starting tackles out, Pitt Decimated by injuries and the Bills resting their starters and their top 3 corners out. Barely got by them at that.
Your right about the offense. It was terrible.

it's not me picking on the cheetahs this time. I looked up NFL strength of schedule and they had the cheetahs as dead last. it was early in the year or preseason, can't remember.

don't forget , us playing the cheetahs twice is a lot different then them playing us twice. Makes up for those other 2 games. I'd look for the article but I don't have the energy tonight but trust me that's what it said. pretty sure I probably quoted and linked it here when I read it anyway

I agree G & it does all rest with Douglas....it is up to him now.

Now I also like the term Buffoon we have not had one of these since Izzy.....

I believe you. And your right, playing us twice definitely weakens their schedule.
I'm saying besides the 2 teams I listed,we play an Identical schedule. Only we had no travel. I think our longest trip was 200 miles. Next year we have 3 trips to the west coast. Fortunately 4 of our home games are vs west coast teams that will have to travel here. Unfortunately, we face some tough teams.

Yeah. True. What ruined us this year was , to me was the order of the first 6 or 7 games. Too much to ask of a new regime to get started with that early schedule even if some of those teams weren't as good as we thought.

Nextyear, all depends on what happens with the o line, imo. And if Gase can change...

That might be asking a lot CH, but, it never hurts to be optimistic.

What went wrong was another botched draft (Polite lasted even shorter than a normal Jets high defensive pick) which left us with the same ineffective offensive line as before after even the token gesture at improvement (Osemele) backfired. And of course key injuries and mono.
