1. Trading Down to the Eagles
There is speculation out there that the New York jets are in position to pull off a blockbuster trade to the Philladephia Eagles. The Jets would give up the sixth overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft, and in return, the Eagles would trade away their first and second round draft picks for the next two years. Oh, and a little guy who goes by the name of Nick Foles. The Jets would be crazy to not make that trade! They would be getting a starting-caliber quarterback, something foreign to the new generation of Jets fans. This is a quarterback who can lead the Jets to a top ten offense if general manager Mike Maccagnan surrounds him with the right talent. So what the Jets wouldn’t get Marcus Mariota? Nobody knows if he will even be an average NFL quarterback, let alone a good one- he could be a bust, for all we know. It happens all the time. Over the last five years, 21 quarterbacks have been drafted in the first two rounds and only six of them have been successful thus far in their careers. Besides Foles, the Jets would still have a first round draft pick, in a class extremely deep in talent. The Eagles currently possess the 20th overall pick in the draft. Due to the constant rise and fall of NFL draft stock, you never know who might be available come April 30th. Having extra picks high in the draft is great, and the Jets would be able to have that luxury for the next two years if they make this trade. They would give up a question mark for a sure-fire success, and four high draft picks. This is an easy trade for Mike Maccagnan.
2. Signing Darrelle Revis
Darrelle Revis, like almost everyone in America, loves a fat wallet and a paycheck with quite a few zeros before the decimal point. His love for money is what will draw him back to New York, where they can offer him the most lucrative salary of his career due to all their cap space. Back when Revis was rocking green and white, he would lock down one side of the field, so the Jets could put extra defensive backs on the other side, giving them among the best secondaries in the league. After he recovered from his torn ACL, the Jets shipped him off to Tampa Bay for the draft pick that resulted in the 2013 defensive rookie of the year, 2014 pro bowl selected right end, Sheldon Richardson. Unfortunately, the Jets’ secondary suffered mightily in the absence of a shutdown corner. Signing Darrelle Revis would not immediately give the Jets a top five secondary again, however it would be a large base for them to build off of. There are other talented cornerbacks the Jets can pursue in free agency and the draft. What Revis would be able to do immediately for the Jets is provide stability and a shutdown corner. With Dee Milliner and Dexter McDougle coming back from ACL tears in 2015, the Jets do have some young talent. McDougle has yet to prove himself in a regular season game, and Milliner is as inconsistent as they come, yet both are insanely talented. It will take more than one acquiring of a top cornerback to give the Jets the boost they need to have one of the league’s premier secondaries.
3. Signing Randall Cobb
Randall Cobb is an excellent wide receiver with a true knack for finding the end zone, as he did so on twelve occasions in the 2014 season. The 24 year old has so much talent, he can be the top receiver in the NFL in due time. If the Jets sign both Cobb and another top wide out, their offense will be unstoppable. Any wide receiver corpse with a Dez Bryant-like receiver lining up opposite of Eric Decker with Cobb as the slot receiver will be at least top ten in the league. What holds them back from being number one? Geno Smith. The kid can play, but he can’t play with consistency. One perfect game means nothing if you have to be benched mid-season due to poor play. If Geno Smith can break out in 2015 or the Jets acquire a more talented quarterback who beats Geno Smith out for the starting job, the Jets will become one of the best offensive teams in the NFL. And that is with or without Randall Cobb, or any other free agent receivers. If the Jets have a true starting quarterback coupled with a great wide receiver corpse like that, Jets fans will finally find out what it feels like to have a top offense.
4. Signing Orlando Franklin
One of the weakest points on the New York Jets’ roster is their offensive line. While anchored by superstars Nick Mangold and D’Brickashaw Ferguson, they lack experience, talent, and consistency everywhere else on the line. Enter Orlando Franklin, an elite offensive lineman who has spent the last three years of his career blocking for arguably the greatest quarterback to ever throw a football. During Franklin’s career, the Broncos had the best rushing game in the league just once, and had two seasons finishing fifteenth and one finishing sixteenth. In the last three seasons, the Broncos allowed the fewest sacks in the NFL twice, and the second fewest once. Orlando Franklin is versatile, so he can play both the offensive tackle and guard positions, and the Jets are very needy for three quality offensive linemen (two guards and a tackle). Because of this, Orlando Franklin would be a huge and smart signing for the Jets.
5. Signing Antonio Cromartie
Antonio Cromartie really wants to come to New York to reunite with head coach Todd Bowles, and several of his ex-teammates. This works out perfectly because he is already familiar with Bowles’ scheme, he is familiar with the New York Jets players and facilities, and he is one of the best cornerback talents in free agency. Cromartie spent the 2015 season putting on a Pro Bowl performance under then-defensive coordinator Todd Bowles for the Arizona Cardinals. If the Jets sign both Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie this offseason, they will have greatly improved their secondary. Revis is a shut-down cornerback, while Cromartie is an aggressive, physical cornerback. Both work well in press coverage, which works out well since Todd Bowles loves to blitz so much. If a defense can successfully hold the opposing offense’s receivers at the line of scrimmage long enough during a blitz play, the pocket will collapse and the quarterback will either be sacked or forced to throw the ball away. Even if the Jets don’t sign Revis, the addition of Cromartie will be a large step in the right direction.
6. Drafting Dorial Green-Beckham
Dorial Green-Beckham might just be the next “Megatron”, and no, that is not an exaggeration. Beckham is an inch taller, but almost as fast- as both possess game-breaking speed. Beckham’s 4.49-second 40-yard dash doesn’t nearly represent his true speed, as he has run the 40-yard dash in 4.37 seconds before, and his super-speed was clearly evident in his performance with Missouri. Dorial Green-Beckham has among the most reliable pair of hands in the 2015 draft class, with the ability to make spectacular catches look effortless! The best way to describe how Beckham plays is like a man playing among children. He has the ability to pluck balls out of the air that should belong to the opposing defensive back! A super-rare talent, Beckham would be the top receiver in the draft if he stayed out of trouble in college. His problems with the law have severely lowered his draft stock, making him a possibility to be on the board while the Jets are picking in the second round, or if they trade down to the Eagles in the first round. If the Jets actually Sign a top wide receiver and Randall Cobb, there would be no need for Dorial Green-Beckham, but regardless, if they do draft Beckham, he could single-handedly turn this offense around. Everybody knows the Jets could use a receiver who can turn would-be interceptions into spectacular catches!
7. Releasing Percy Harvin
If the Jets release Percy Harvin, they will have an extra $10.5 million to spend on the top free agents. There is no way the injury-prone, inconsistent receiver is worth $10.5 million. The Jets will let their coaching staff decide Harvin’s future with the Jets. In eight games, Harvin only scored one touchdown, and caught just 29 passes for 350 yards. The trade for him was an almost complete failure. If the Jets retain Harvin, they will lose a fourth round draft pick this year, but if they cut him, it will only be a sixth rounder. Percy Harvin brings practically nothing to the table until he becomes more durable and consistent. There is no proof that he magically improved overnight so he should be cut, for sure. When Harvin is playing well, there aren’t many receivers in the league who can out-perform him, but he struggles to keep playing well for long periods of time.
