Sheldon Richardson Speaks Out

Although his comments run arrogant etc, I think we need to put ourselves in his place. He is a young man. He has performed very well -0 exceptionally. He skipped some voluntary stuff. maybe there was a darn good reason for him to skip it.

And he appears to have received a lot of nasty comments. I know being in the NFL is a privilege, but who among us would have been ready at 25 to read scathing comments about our work by scores of strangers? It isnt easy.

I'll cut him a lot of slack on comments like these - and I promise to forget them completely the first time he beats a Pats lineman, gets to Brady and leaves an impression of Tom and his deflated balls in the New England turf.

Well, I agree with blindside he will definitely be at mandatory events; but again, team leaders skipping team activities is a bad thing.

It's great our hired hands show up but our top home grown talent is MIA. It's great if you're okay with having a bunch of leaders who can't lead by example I guess. Because that's what we have.

Totally agree and I'm not going to soft peddle it for Richardson, Wilkerson or anyone else. Mandatory or not, ideally you want your best players to be there and setting the right example for everyone else. If the stars are ALL IN, we need to be ALL IN. I also think its disrespectful of the new HC who is trying to implement a completely new system. Its not the end of the world, it doesn't wreck our season, but ideally you want your best players and so-called team leaders to be there.

Also I listened to Todd Bowles press conference, when he was asked about Richardson not being there, and he absolutely sounded disappointed too me, and made sure not to cover for him in any way, saying I have no idea why he's not here when asked if he had an excuse, then saying he's been IN and OUT when asked if he's been around for most of the off season. His tone was one of disappointment in my view.

Being a great player doesn't make you a leader and vice versa.

PFF just moved Richardson to #2 on their 3-4 DE list ahead of Wilkerson and behind Watt. They mentioned his 8 sacks and 54 QB pressures and need for a big pay day on the horizon.

Very true, but most coaches will tell you that ideally your best players are also your hardest workers and team leaders.

When those two things converge, you have a well oiled machine. To use an extreme example, its common knowledge that Michael Jordan was maniacal in practice and demanded nothing less than the same effort from everyone else. When Joe Shmoe tells you to pick up the pace, you roll your eyes and say worry about yourself, but when Michael Jordan is working his ass off and tells you to do likewise, you pick up the pace, no questions asked.

good thing we just drafted a possible replacement, huh??? :)

I hope not. I'd hate him if he was on another team but he's one of my favorite players on our current roster.

However, the fact Ronnie Lott (my all time favorite player) compared Williams to Reggie White is really exciting. I look forward to seeing how he looks. Richardson I think is another Warren Sapp...similar weight just taller, well, and slower. But a similar player on the field.

In a couple years having to pay him franchise QB money is going to be tough when he isn't a leader.

The problem isn't how he responded, it's that he didn't show up to practice in the first place . . .
Yep, and I don't want to hear that "spending time with my family" stuff, ALL PLAYERS would rather spend time with their family or GF than be running gassers at OTA's, but THIS IS YOUR JOB and the the reason why your family is living well.

Now if you are tending to a sick loved one or something of that nature, then I understand, otherwise you need to get your ass to your job when duty calls. If hanging out with family came first, there would be ZERO attendance at OTA's.

Im a lakers fan too...and this sounds so much like shaq when he was feuding with Kobe. Shaq always showed up at training camp almost 400lbs. His excuse was always he's paid to play during the season, not the offseason.

Well, Richardson doesn't care about his job until he has to be there. This is a Suh and Detroit situation waiting to happen...

I wouldn't say he doesn't care about his job..it is really no one's business aside from maybe coaching staff why he isn't there....maybe he has some pressing family business...so be it..he was just responding to the A HOLE fans lambasting him through twitter..really ..who the F are some fans to talk down to him.....hes a grown man..he will be here and do his job.....

Would you go to "voluntary days at work" and not get paid ??? what he does and what everyone else do are 2 different things..

A) his roster spot is a given

B) a lot of the other guys here LIVE around the area..so even if they are at practice....they go home to their families...

he doesn't live around here

If he's all about the paycheck, I totally agree with you.

If he's all about winning a championship, I totally disagree with you.

As a fan, you better believe I care more about a championship than his family time.

He's entitled to his priorities, and I'm entitled to mine . . .

I think we would all say we care more about our family.
I don't work anymore and my situation was different than an NFL player. I would say worse but provided my family was healthy I would not turn down the opion of a free unpaid 3 day seminar that would help me at work. That is as close to Richardsons scenario as I can come up with.

I guess you have to weigh the options and make a choice..I am not worried about Sheldon..there is no player that leaves it on the line like him..

I think the thing that bothered him was having people that he doesn't even knowfrom Adam trying to dictate to him what he should do... if I had strangers dictating what I should and shouldn't do with family and work I would tell them to F off also....

Not really a fair comparison as he's had "time with his family" for the past 5 months.

If this time is so voluntary, why do the majority of players show up? Do they not have family (or just don't like them very much)? Or do they have a sense of duty to fulfill ALL aspects of this dream job they've been blessed with?

I won't lie to you -- the guy just dropped a few notches in my book, just like Revis did. Doesn't mean I don't want them on the team (or see them do well), it just makes me root more for the jersey than the name on the back . . .

Athletes shouldn't be on twitter. Cowardly "fans" feel brave tweeting them, and they are human and respond back with anger.

@RichCimini are you concerned that Sheldon Richardson isn't at camp? It's a new coach, new system, shouldn't he be at every OTA? #Jetsmail

@RichCimini: First of all, it's not like he's not showing up at all. He has attended about half the workouts, according to Bowles. Richardson participated in Thursday's OTA practice, according to his tweet. Remember, these workouts are voluntary. The only mandatory portion of the offseason is the June 9-11 minicamp. Richardson is a hard worker and I can tell you he takes a lot of pride in his game, so there's no doubt he will be ready for the season. Me? I'd want to attend every practice, trying to absorb as much of the new scheme as possible. I'd also want to impress the new coach and get to know my new teammates. But that's me; I'm old school. I don't know why Richardson's attendance has been sporadic; he might have a perfectly legitimate reason. Technically, he doesn't need a reason.
