I would let him play 12 games and hope is awesome and then trade for at least 1st round pick or more.

Problem is, would you be willing to give up a 1 for a guy that is one positive test away from a season long suspension. This will hurt his value in a trade.

NFLPA should really think about trying to negotiate marijuana out of the substance abuse policy. It certainly doesn't carry any performance enhancing qualities. And lots of players are losing lots of money getting suspended for it. Honestly, I'm glad to hear it WAS marijuana, even if I'm unhappy that Sheldon will be suspended.

NFL teams generally don’t care about players smoking marijuana. NFL teams care greatly when players have to choice between marijuana and football.

Most players who test positive for marijuana a single time immediately choose football over marijuana, avoiding any further positive tests and all potential discipline. For Cowboys linebacker Rolando McClain and Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson, they repeatedly failed to choose football.

For Richardson, it was marijuana. And the Jets, who used the sixth overall pick in the 2015 draft on defensive lineman Leonard Williams, surely knew that Richardson was choosing marijuana over football enough times to worry about him missing games when they picked Williams.

For McClain, word emerged in February that he was facing a four-game fine under the substance-policy, only one violation away from a four-game suspension.

For both, they’ll have to choose football over marijuana or the next step will be a 10-game suspension. Then, a year.

For the next year, they’ll have to pass up to 10 drug tests per month to avoid further suspensions.

if anything this makes it cheaper to re sign richardson & we just drafted a beast to fill in while he's suspended..

They can stop, but they don't want to, and don't think they have to. Egotistical, arrogant people like so many professional athletes don't believe they will get caught. And if they do, they don't believe they'll be held responsible for their actions. It wouldn't have to be a choice between football and marijuana if marijuana wasn't on the banned substances list. It has been proven time and time again, including here with Sheldon, that top athletes can perform at elite levels while smoking marijuana in their private lives. I'm not trying to give him a pass, we need him, and anything that gets him suspended for FOUR games is terrible and obviously hurts the team. I'm not trying to give anyone a pass, but there has been an obvious cultural shift on this issue, and because of that, and because of how many players are losing money because of the policy, and because of the way that NFL teams don't care unless their players get suspended, and because of the way that top athletes can perform while taking this drug (i.e. the reason why NFL teams don't care), all of these are reasons to potentially re-evaluate the policy.

Someone like Sheldon, who has a twitter handle of @godforshort, is clearly not the type of person who is prone to humility, and probably just figured he'd get away with it. Maybe he figured "it doesn't matter, I'm so good that I can do whatever I want. and I'll still get paid because I'm an elite talent." I hope this wakes him up, because no matter my opinion about the subject, it is still against the rules and we need our best players!

Hopefully we dont rush the rookie for the sake of rushing him.

It does drive down his trade value, I have no doubts about that. he was already busted twice, so they know he doesnt learn from his mistakes...or he wouldn't have made a second offense.

It might also drive Mo's demands up knowing he's clean with no issues...

I also dont know if it drives Sheldon's price down, or if he just waits to become a free agent, bets on himself to stay clean, and adds a contract void clause if caught again and signs his 75 mill gauranteed deal with a 100 mill contract+ in a few years. I wouldn't be shocked if he goes that route over taking less $$$ to stay here.

Either way, I cant agree that losing him for 4 games in the few remaining seasons we likely have him is a good thing for us. id like to get as much out of him as possible while he's a Jet...

If you think Tom Brady getting a four games suspension when it's all said and done, than I have a bridge to sell you. ( at worst two games , probably one) This isn't a big deal for the Jets losing Sheldon Richardson- providing one of the other Defense lineman don't get injured).

Btw. Does Muhammad Wilkerson hold out to the start of training camp. He clearly has the leverage over the team, that the team had over him before this suspension was announced. What choice do the Jets have but to get a deal done with Wilkerson.

What I can't believe is that it was announced that Antonio Gates was just suspended the same 4 games for PED use.
I realize they are both banned substances, but where's the logic in that?
