Should the Jets make a long-term commitment to Fitzpatrick?

Why trade Geno or cut him when we own him on the cheap? He has NFL experience and there is no better deal out there for the jets.
If the JETS think that Petty is the future and want to re-sign Fitz for the present then we are set at QB. Cutting Geno would be stupid? Pick up that #3 next year.
This year is RB, OL, OL, LB, LB, BAP, BAP

because if fitz goes down or struggles, i'd rather see petty or a rookie draftee play instead of geno. i think it's best for both sides to move on from geno. bring in someone else to compete and get reps and allow geno the chance to start over in a new organization.

Please, MAC had a decent year but Fitz was hardly a steal; He was available to anyone that wanted him. BM was a steal. Devin Smith...not so much.
Is Geno a bum...probably but you have to pay him over 500K if you cut him. Another 500K and you have a 4th year vet who has real games under his belt. I'm not crazy about Geno either but this is a business decision. I say wait and see if Fitz walks, because you sure as heck don't franchise Fitz.

actrually, the jets save over $1 million under the cap by cutting or trading geno. he has a $1.6MM cap charge if on the roster. if he's gone, they take $500K of dead money and save the rest

Only an inexperienced rookie or a lesser athlete is going to be had for less. You still need a 3rd guy. I think he may have learned to shut his mouth after IK shut it for him. I am not so sure we come to an agreement with Fitz. Time will tell.

i honestly don't think signing fitz will be a problem. i don't think he will have a ton of offers for a starting gig and why would he want to leave after his best season of his career, reunited with the OC he's historically done the best with. he's not gonna get crazy money - i think somewhere around $8 million per year on a 3 year deal with low-to-no guarantees after 2016.

as to geno, i just don't want him on the jets anymore. i'd rather draft a rookie and have the rookie and petty back up fitz. if fitz goes down, do you honestly think geno is leading the team to the playoffs? if you think yes, then i guess we have to agree to disagree, but i can understand why you'd want to keep him at a relatively low cost. if you think no, geno doesn't get us to the playoffs, then what's the point keeping him? if fitz goes down, throw petty or a rookie out there.

Whenever that first day arrives when teams are allowed to release players, probably after the SB when the new league year begins

That day should be Geno Smith's final day as a New York Jet

Pretty sure they will. Bowles has said he wants him back, and he will be the starter. Fitz has said he wants to be here, he's tired of packing and unpacking (WKRP). He has moved his family here, and unlike other years he has 2 kids in school now, and doesn't really want to relocate them again.

He has more value to the Jets then he would have for other teams. Don't think he'll get many other teams to GUARANTEE him the starters job. Think if it's close bidding it makes sense for him to sign with the Jets.

I'm expecting a reasonable contract 5-7 guaranteed, with incentives up to 10-12 depending on how the team, and he does. The added cap hit can be passed to future years.

He'll be back
