Remember when Zach Sudfeld was a rookie in New England, and was once known as “Baby-Gronk?” Yeah, that was a long time ago.

Sudfeld has now been a member of the New York Jets for the past three seasons, and would have been in contention to play a role in the teams offense in 2015 if not for torn ACL way back in June. At the time of his injury he was waived/injured and returned to the Jets injured reserve after clearing waivers.

It is always difficult to enter free agency coming off a lost year due to injury, that is the predicament that Sudfeld, 26, faces in the coming months.

Lets play a little keep, or dump.

Name:
Zach Sudfeld

2014 Stats:
5 Rec, 85 Yds,

2015 Stats:
N/A

2015 Summary:
When Zach Sudfeld hit the turf during a June minicamp, the Jets immediately feared the worst. Their young tight end, who saw plenty of action the year before was writhing in pain, holding his knee after getting shoved to the ground by safety Calvin Pryor.

Not surprisingly, later that week the Jets announced that Sudfeld had torn his ACL in his right knee and would be lost for the season. This was a huge blow for Sudfeld, who as hoping to win playing time behind Jeff Cumberland, the later-injured Jace Amaro and Kellen Davis at tight end.

Potential 2016 Role With Jets:
The tight end position was used so sparingly this past season, that you sometimes forgot there was even one on the field. Would that have been different if Sudfeld were healthy? Probably not. However, because of the uncertain futures of Cumberland and Davis, there is an opportunity for Sudfeld to earn a role in the Jets offense.

He has extraordinary physical tools for someone his size and is also a competent blocker. Sudfeld also has value on special teams, and this is the area that the Jets missed him most in 2015. The former New England Patriot had twenty tackles on kickoff coverage the previous year.

If he returns and is healthy, he has a great chance to make the opening day roster.

Other TE’s on Roster:
Jeff Cumberland, Jace Amaro, Adrien Robinson

Contract Estimation
1 year, league minimum.

Keep/Dump?
Keep

I'm definitely in the KEEP crowd.

Was very upset when he blew his knee up in camp last year. At 6'7" 265, and decent speed, Sudfeld is a major problem to cover.

He should only command vet's minimum. His play alone on ST's is worth the money, any one who watched ST's this year knows he was missed.

Unlike Amaro, Sudfeld did his re-hab at the team facility. And ws in the building almost every day. He has good talent and decent speed. i thought he had an opportunity for a break out year last summer. He never got the chance

Definatly a keeper. He will be cheap, is gaileys dream sized wr,blocks, and is valuable on special teams. And oh yes, is on the right side of 30

the question for me is what do the coaches and team docs think about his recovery in terms of ultimate quickness, ability to cut and speed. If he has lost a ton of that, he cant perform. If the long term effects are modest, keep him given attributes discussed above,

While a blown knee is always reason for concern, a guy Like Sudfeld, who isn't a speed demon to begin with , like Marshall rely's more on his size to beat smaller DB's, shouldn't be dramatically affected. The injury happened very early in camp and he should have had time to be fully recovered.

Devin smith on the otherhand who all he's got is speed, and his injury was week 13, I'm very concerned about

Agree on both - likely that Sudfield is okay for his role

And worried about Smith

Overall, we have a NEED for SPEED!!

From all the tweets and articles on rumors from Senior Bowl week, Macc is interviewing mostly speed edge rushers, and QB's

with mac showing this much interest in QBs, what does this do to smith's trade value??

does this make GMs want to trade for him even more before potentially having to compete for smith on the open market??

& if so, is this mac (at least to some degree) playing poker??

Does this tell us that Petty isnt ready?

No, this is a horrible QB class. Even guys like Lynch, or Goff , who will be going top 10, won't be ready to start.

This tells me they are looking for smith's replacement. They will have 3 QB's on the team next year. Hopefully smith won't be one of them

No this isn't poker playing.

Macc has limited access to draft able players. The Senior Bowl practice is the single biggest, most important event in the Draft process. IMO even bigger then the combine. The GM's get to see Players practice hard against equally skilled players for the first time in person.

They get to talk to players they like. Guys like Spence who is right now lighting up the Senior Bowl practice. Looks like he might be the best edge rusher in the draft according to reports and tweets. He has had some off field substance abuse problems and expelled from Ohio state. GM's want to talk to him to see if he is a total idiot, or if he understands he is putting his career in jeopardy.

Wentz who is from an FCS school. Suspect Macc would want to know if he has leadership abilitys to lead a team.

Don't think this affects smiths trade value one way or the other. All GM's know that the Jets will part company with smith if they can.

Agree

Mac knows he is releasing Smith as soon as it is allowable and doing his due diligence at these All Star games to see if there is a prospect QB to bring in for a #3 in 2016

The Jets do not have any better options right now at TE, so I support keeping him around. Not that I ever think he'll amount to even so much as 1% of what Gronk has turned out to be. But the Jets just do not have any more appealing options.

I doubt he will ever play at the level Gronk is,(who does?) but I think you are WAY under valuing his potential. He was a project coming in, very enthusiastic, very physical.

If he's going to be anything, this will be his summer. We'll see

Just as a side note, his "lil brother" 6'5" 250, played in the Shrine game last week. He's a QB Cannon for an arm, accuracy issues. Didn't play to badly. figures to be an UDFA or a 7th round pick. That would be interesting

Speaking of Baby Gronk..... Gronk's brother, Glenn, is in this draft. He is a FB.... Scouting reports on him aren't all that special

And he came to us after playing for the very best HC in the league. THAT HC was unable to tap into his potential. SO WHY does anyone think that Todd Bowles, a terrible HC at best, can BETTER tap into this kids potential?! It's BS. He filled a roster spot. And really the most pathetic thing about it is that he's BETTER than any TE we have on this team. It speaks volumes about how pathetic the Jets have been at picking talent in recent years. Mac, I think is better, but Idzik and Tanny??????????
