Should They Trade Sheldon Richardson?

The New York Jets have one of the best defensive lines in the NFL. They were able to lock up Muhammad Wilkerson with a long-term deal this summer. They had Leonard Williams fall into their laps with the No.6 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. They did well in free agency, adding Steve McLendon and Jarvis Jenkins.

There are depth and talent, and that is before you even get to Sheldon Richardson. Richardson is arguably the best of the bunch, and someone the Jets are very fond of. Like Wilkerson this past season, Richardson is set to hit it rich this summer.

That is part of the reason that he could be traded before the NFL Trade Deadline. Moving a player of the caliber of Richardson is rarely seen, but a path the Jets may look down. It is one that Greg A. Bedard of Sports Illustrated believes they should look at.

Over at SportsIllustrated.com, Bedard made a list of six players that should be on the move prior to the NFL’s trade deadline on November 1st at 4 PM ET. Richardson landed on that list, as Bedard believes the Jets should trade him to the Indianapolis Colts for a first-round pick.

Here is what Bedard has to say about the Jets trading Richardson to the Colts.

If Colts GM Ryan Grigson was okay with sending a first-round pick to the Brown for RB Trent Richardson, he should leap at the chance to finally get a disruptive young lineman like Richardson. Most people think the Colts need offensive line help. That would certainly be an improvement, but getting somebody—anybody—that can actually disrupt the opposing passer and rusher would mean a lot more (Colts are 21st in offense, 31st in defense according to FO). And Richardson is so good and his skills so varied that he could immediately help in both areas. The Jets already signed Muhammad Wilkerson to a big-money contract extension and Leonard Williams is a young stud up front. They have so many areas that need to be addressed, so New York should diversify its payroll and take some money out of the defensive line.

Do the Jets want to throw in the towel on the 2016 season? They will not admit it, but the season is more than likely over; a team will not say they are out of contention until they are mathematically eliminated. Bedard believes that should go into full sell mode, as wide receiver Brandon Marshall also landed on the list. If the Jets truly evaluate their roster they could come to the conclusion of moving Richardson being a good idea.

Richardson has proven he is a risky investment. He has off-field trouble leading to games missed because of suspension. There is no doubt that the talent is there, but he comes with more risks in a long-term contract than someone such as Wilkerson.

With Wilkerson and Williams on the team long-term, it would help the Jets to improve at another area on the team. They could use some youth on the offensive line and the secondary has struggled; a first round pick could net them a solid asset at either of those spots.
If Richardson is put on the trade block, there will be a lot of teams calling and gauging the Jets interest. He is an impact player on the field against both the run and pass, something any teams could use.

Easy one YES !!!!!! I would even take a 1st rounder in 2018.We may need that to get in position to draft a QB (assuming next year is finding out who if any will be our long term answer at QB)..

Rather trade Wilkerson and that fat ass contract.......

I don't see that happening. Why would we agree to pay him that big of a contract, and then try to unload it? He's been dealing with a foot/ankle injury in recent weeks. I'm not concerned about his drop in performance this early into the season. He's still a building block for this team.

Leonard Williams is really what makes Sheldon expendable. Too much redundancy with these two players. If we don't trade Sheldon, we're going to have to pay large, and I don't see how we tie up another large sum of money on the defensive line. Try to get a high pick or two, and start rebuilding the O-line.

Or here's a concept: find a pass rushing OLB. Our defense has needed one since Bill Parcells was here.

Sheldon's contract will need to be redone this offseason. Do you think he will play for less than Mo? His twitter handle is godforshort. Get rid of him before that headache even starts.

what are you talking about they have a team option they picked up for next season...
his contract is set in stone for next season at $8.069 M...
who cares about his twitter handle he has been on the right track this season...

if anything is done it doesn't have to made until trade deadline next year...

and yes I am one of the few that thinks this would be a huge mistake in trading him away, but if it happens then so be it...

Well being that Todd Bowles seems so reluctant to use Sheldon in the best position possible that allows him to do what he does best, (rush the passer, disrupt the running game, etc,) I say TRADE him. I mean this is pointless. Toilet Bowles is playing him most normally as a stand up linebacker.

Sheldon Richardson is a 300 pound defensive lineman for crying out loud?!

Can someone please, anybody explain to me the logic behind this????

The fact is, EVERYONE claimed that with the addition of Darron Lee that Sheldon could go back to playing his native position. The CS claimed that the linebacking had greatly improved speed. They have added Lorenzo Mauldin, Darron Lee, and Jordan Jenkins to specifically improve team speed. Or so that is what toilet Bowles has claimed.

Meanwhile, all of their new linebackers hardly see the field and toilet Bowles continues to be stubborn and use a 300 DE to play linebacker?!

This is clear madness and an enormous quandary that I cannot possibly understand. Regardless of what toilet Bowles intent is, he's shown very clearly that either he cannot get his new linebackers to play up to their abilities or they just plain suck and toilet Bowles is trying to cover up the mistake.

This defense played a pretty good game this last weekend almost exclusively due to the play of the defensive line and more specifically Sheldon Richardson playing at DE. How many more times must toilet Bowles see that something is working and yet he'll decide to go away from it??

As for trading Sheldon I say do it..... This team has major needs along the OL and trading Sheldon to a team that needs help at DL would not only give Sheldon a chance to play exclusively at what he does best, but it would also quite possibly allow the Jets to get help at OL.

Mo acknowledged his store ankle,is actually a tendon issue from his surgery, and missed last game. He might miss a couple games and has not been effective. So let's trade Richardson sure. That leaves us with Leonard Williams on the line.

Trade Richardson? Smart GM could see he is a high risk Player off field & on field he talks like he is a Pro Bowl Player when Richardson is average Player at best. Rookie Williams is the first guy at QB-RB while being double teamed. Richardson is right there AFTER Williams. I would like to trade Richardson NOW & get something for him.

I dont know how tradeable he is - he basically has $18MM guaranteed next year, and keeping him beyond that on this contract costs you another $16MM/yr for 2018-2020. Besides, even a trade leaves us with $12MM in accelerated bonus money against the cap, so only a $6MM reduction vs. keeping him.

Saw that B Marshall is on Eagles wish list. Wouldn't shock me if we lose to Browns that Macc will try get what he can for a couple of players.

Besides, with Richardson's inflated opinion of himself, he's not going to come much cheaper.

Sounds like they are fielding calls for Richardson.

Bleacher Report reporting that "teams are calling the Jets about Sheldon Richardson". I can think of about three or four teams in desperate need of a playmaking defensive lineman.

Get a first round pick for him, and it's a done deal.

Yeah, I agree. He's a great player but we have too many guys playing the same position on the D line. Get a first for him and send him on his way.
