You've just stated what I've been thinking everytime I read another post about how "the Jets would've paid Mo already if they wanted him".
Well stated.
Yeah, well hold on to that thought after he's been traded.

Read this morning that Mo is looking for a contract north of JJ Watt's; one word - delusional. No wonder a deal hasn't gotten done with the last two administrations. But somebody always pays, just look at Suh with the phins.
The Jets should just franchise Mo and get it over with. If he is being unreasonable, that's too bad. North of JJ Watt money is ludicrous
Of course Elias. That's been the plan all along. But his future is what is up in the air. He doesn't have a problem getting franchised because it's a one year contract getting kind of money he thinks he's worth. He's truly delusional with that line of thinking, but it is what it is.
And where the Jets can't keep on franchising him, I say tag and trade him. This is the best solution. Mo will be happy in another city with his money. The Jets will be happy with still a very good DL and a few extra first day picks. It's the best the Jets and Jets fans can hope for.

If trading Wilkerson is what needs to happen, so be it. The point I'm making (again) is that none of the armchair GM's around here know what Mo's asking for, nor what the Jets are offering. So it's presumptuous to say "they would've paid him by now if they really wanted him". I've seen that suggestion posted numerous times around here, and it's a false statement.
If Mo's asking for the world, and the Jets don't want to pay him that, then yes, you hope to get fair market value in a tag and trade. And you also pray that Sheldon Richardson keeps his nose clean, and doesn't ask for JJ Watt money next year.
here's the source mainejet, a bit thin but the source nonetheless:

It's as well known as possible, without the contract being published, that mo is stubborn and asking for more than he is worth, while doing everything right with the media. Except after a bad game he dodged a paid radio interview.
The problem we have, is too many good players at the same position, dt. Which player gets us the highest return without compromising the unit? Mo.

Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reports the Titans are the early "leaders" to land free agent NT Damon Harrison.
The Jets would ideally like to retain "Snacks," but Cole reports his asking price is currently too steep for Gang Green, which is one of the few NFL teams short on salary cap space this offseason. At 6-foot-3 and 339 pounds, Harrison would take over as the Titans' two-down nose tackle in Dick LeBeau's 3-4 defense. Mar 7 - 2:34 PM

Harrison isn't worth overpaying. Nothing lasts forever. Last year was our hail Mary. Now we're going to have painful decisions to be made.
