Of course Elias. That's been the plan all along. But his future is what is up in the air. He doesn't have a problem getting franchised because it's a one year contract getting kind of money he thinks he's worth. He's truly delusional with that line of thinking, but it is what it is.
And where the Jets can't keep on franchising him, I say tag and trade him. This is the best solution. Mo will be happy in another city with his money. The Jets will be happy with still a very good DL and a few extra first day picks. It's the best the Jets and Jets fans can hope for.

If trading Wilkerson is what needs to happen, so be it. The point I'm making (again) is that none of the armchair GM's around here know what Mo's asking for, nor what the Jets are offering. So it's presumptuous to say "they would've paid him by now if they really wanted him". I've seen that suggestion posted numerous times around here, and it's a false statement.
If Mo's asking for the world, and the Jets don't want to pay him that, then yes, you hope to get fair market value in a tag and trade. And you also pray that Sheldon Richardson keeps his nose clean, and doesn't ask for JJ Watt money next year.

It's not, "If they wanted him they would've signed him" it's "If they COULD HAVE signed him they WOULD HAVE by now"
It's also NOT armchair GM's it's what all of the sports programs in NY are saying. There's also nothing presumptuous about it. It's called forward thinking. It's called managing the roster with an eye on the future. It's WISE thinking.

It's as well known as possible, without the contract being published, that mo is stubborn and asking for more than he is worth, while doing everything right with the media. Except after a bad game he dodged a paid radio interview.

But that's only at this juncture, we don't know how the others will pan out. Sheldon looks like a f*ck up, but Williams seems to be doing everything right and he's still very young. That kid is still only 21 years old. It's not a stretch to think he might actually be still growing? Who knows what he'll become at the height of his career, but I do know he'll get better than he was in 2015.

Whatever the reason, the negotiations haven't worked. I'd hate to see him go, but if a tag/trade is the team's best option... You have to take it. It's a big risk to let it ride with Sheldon, but sometimes you have to roll the dice.
That being said, I really hope they find a way to re sign Harrison. It would be a shame to lose him.

I agree on Harrison. He is great. One of the best at his position but I would gladly give up some of his run stuffing ability for someone that stops the run a little bit less but is more effective rushing the passer.

The Giants already have had free-agent defensive end Charles Johnson in for a visit and have expressed interest in free-agent defensive end Mario Williams. Those two players are eligible to sign at any time because they were cut before their contracts expired. The Giants also have had discussions with their own free-agent defensive ends, Jason Pierre-Paul and Robert Ayers, whom they could sign at any time as well.
But while the Giants will continue to be active in the hunt for edge-rush help, checking in on everyone from Olivier Vernon to Adrian Clayborn to Williams Hayes to the prospects they can take with the No. 10 pick in the draft, they'll also be in the hunt for help on the interior of the defensive line, where some stars are available.
Denver's Malik Jackson is the name everyone wants to know about, and the Giants have some interest there. But don't be surprised if the more likely defensive tackle is someone who played a lot closer to East Rutherford. Damon Harrison, the 27-year-old nose tackle who's spent the past four years with the Jets, is expected to hit the market and should be of interest to the Giants. He's a 6-foot-4, 350-pound run-stopper who'd look really good next to Johnathan Hankins on the defensive line between whoever the ends turn out to be.
Last year in free agency, the Giants missed out on some of their top defensive tackle targets, including Dan Williams, and ended up signing Harrison's former backup, Kenrick Ellis. That didn't work out, and while Cullen Jenkins could still re-sign and Jay Bromley could be ready for a larger role, Harrison is one of the best interior run defenders in the entire league and would shore things up dramatically on first and second downs.
You're going to hear a lot of names connected with the Giants in the coming days, and they'll be in on more or less all of the big defensive free agents to some degree.
