ESPN -- The Jets' brain trust will tackle this question once the disappointment subsides, which could take a while.

This could've been their year; it should've been their year. They played one of the easiest schedules in the NFL, stayed relatively healthy, produced their best offensive numbers in nearly two decades and got career years out of Ryan Fitzpatrick, Brandon Marshall and Muhammad Wilkerson.

But they still came up short, blowing a shot when they controlled their own destiny. This was a win-now team, and everything was aligned for a nice January run. That's why this hurts so much for Jets fans.

For 2016, the Jets have to figure out a way to maintain what they developed and improve their weaknesses, but it's not easy to take that next step. They'll need to add speed on both sides of the ball, bolster the offensive line and tighten up the special teams.

On the positive side, Todd Bowles established his program, making last year's 4-12 disaster a distant memory.

Again, I agree but let me say we need better timing on this team......a team needs to grow at the same time...not easy to do

timing is one thing but continuity is another...

special teams is or should be the direct focus this off season...

I know during key situations Quigley has funked us but is there anyone better in free agency? or in the draft? not sure yet...

Same goes for kicker R. Bullock, depending on where Folk is with his injury this could be a sticky situation...

Returners aside, we need to find better discipline role players that take their jobs more serious then this lot who have blown assignments all season long...

I didn't want to go there, but it has to be in the consideration... Also could say since he didn't have the talent to run his design he could just be a product of the useless fair catching talent he had to deal with... J Kerley or Joke for short

You are right we must look at the talent or lack of first

IMO, a special teams coach's main responsibility is to make the most of fringe NFL players & young talent that still isn't ready to be a factor on offense/defense yet.. another thing i was disappointed in with the kid from ohio state.. the word was he was a hell of a gunner in college but i digress.. of course, solid punting & kicking needs to be a given..

bottom line is, westy was able to consistently plug in new parts & not miss a beat.. & his team's played with fire, heart & a sense of pride.. as in, "we are just as an important team as the offense & defense!!"

didn't get any of that vibe from april.. at all..

tell me this then, preseason did Walter Powell earn his job?

only reason he was cut is because we were stuck with Jeremy Kerley's ridiculous extension

add in all season long we really didn't have a kick returner if you call Chris Owusu was that guy

penalties killed us

Nick Folk injury

so there are excuses for this unit...

expect this team will address this unit this off season, not saying April is safe but there was turnover all season long that key members he had early were discarded in roster moves and injured reserve shelved...

The OL performed well, but it is older. Very good numbers, both in the ground game and in protection. It's not nearly the need some think it is, though some youth in the unit would be welcome. Hopefully, Smith heals and becomes the vertical WR threat he was drafted to be. I'd like to see what either Enunwa or Amaro could do in the H-back role, preferably Enunwa, with Amaro as a true receiving TE. I don't know how much Ivory has in the tank. I could see a versatile, perhaps a speedy, RB with receiving skills taken in the mid rounds.

On defense, I could see looking at LB. Mauldin may be the up-and-coming edge rusher at OLB. I'd look at coverage FS, agreed. I do think Marcus Williams could provide legit CB depth, and McDougle actually stepped up some late in the season. The depth at DL can be handled with some veteran FA signings.

Totally agree on specials. I don't want Cro or Kerley back there any more. Hopefully, Smith comes back 100% healthy. Same with Folk.

All in all, I think some of the needs you mentioned are in house already. Guys like Smith, Mauldin, and Marcus Williams fill some of those needs.

what i'm saying is that their are always extenuating circumstances special teams coaches have to deal with including westhoff's long run with us as well..

i wasn't impressed with the way april handled his for us..

& again, i'm big on fire, heart & pride on special teams..

westhoff > april big time as far as that goes..

I don't disagree with what you are saying... But I feel this season we left ourselves thin in depth for special teams... Need key individuals along with those backup role players that fill out the special teams team...

Like last year Nick Bellore, this year Tommy Bohanon big difference and feel it was a major drop off...
Gunners were defensive backs that aren't good tacklers, or willing tacklers even on defense...

I don't know who to blame on special teams because this unit had too many up and down swings all season long...

Westhoff was the best Special Teams coordinator in Jets history and there will never be anyone like him again...

yeah, i'm a huge westy fan as well.. i know april has had success in the NFL but jeezbus, this was a freaking train wreck..

*sigh* i've finally come to terms with today's season ender enough to start posting again because i'm crushed.. that said, who isn't here.. :(

Don't forget a young franchise QB which is pretty much impossible to come by. So if Petty isnt it or the Jets don't draft, sign or trade for one then ofcourse we roll with Fitz and hopefully he can help this year get us to the playoffs.

jetgreen13 --- even Westoff struggled late in his career when the talent deteriorated. I say we give April one more year to get it together. I do agree though that what I saw out of that unit this year is not promising at all. Not one good thing happened all year.

I hope we find a replacement for Quigley. Does Folk return or Bullock?

he did..

if bowles wants april back, i wouldn't be thrilled but i can live with that..

not with quigley or bullock though.. i have zero trust in either..

if folk is healthy next season, i'm all for bringing him back..

what do you think??

I agree. I wanted Quigley gone after last season. The competition they have brought in hasnt been that great. I guess it's really hard to get a good punter.

If Folk is healthy I want him back but his price is a bit steep so I think the Jets to make cap space may keep Bullock over him.

7th round pick could be used on Kevin Hogan from Stanford who could be that developmental QB that fits this system we are currently running... He has the body of work but not splashy for most...

honestly E, i wouldn't even let quigley compete for the job next season.. i would cut bait & move on..

that said, isn't folk still under contract?? or are you saying he "is" & you think he's making more than he's worth??
