Saw this on Reddit. Seems like an original post. Kudos to the person that posted it. Not sure how trustworthy his stats are so take it FWIW. Reddit has some brilliant posters so I do believe it....

Take this for what you will, as Pro Bowls are more of a popularity contest than the All-Pro teams, which actually have some significance.

I found this to be pretty eye opening though. I didn't hold the Pro Bowl in particularly high regard, but the fact that 1/3 players get in certainly says something.

Anyhow, enjoy the notes below...a position by position breakdown of how many have made it and what %.

Overall:

319 players have been selected in the first round in the last decade (not 320 because of SpyGate). There have been 105 different players selected to the Pro Bowl from the first round in the last decade, so if you get drafted in the first round, there is literally a 33% chance of getting on the Pro Bowl roster. Now, getting into position by position, it gets a little more interesting....

Position by Position:

•Quarterback: 9/27 QBs selected in round one made a Pro-Bowl (33%)

•Wide Receiver: 12/37 WRs selected in round one made a Pro Bowl (32%)

•Offensive Tackle 12/39 OTs selected in round one made a Pro Bowl (31%)

•Guard: 6/11 Guards selected in round one made a Pro Bowl (55%)

•Center: 5/7 Centers selected in round one made a Pro Bowl (71%)

•Running Back: 10/24 RBs selected in round one made a Pro Bowl (42%)

•Tight End: 4/8 TEs selected in round one made a Pro Bowl (50%)

•Cornerback: 12/39 CBs selected in round one made a Pro Bowl (31%)

•Safety: 7/19 safeties selected in round one made a Pro Bowl (37%).

•Linebacker: 12/34 LBs selected in round one made a Pro Bowl. (35%)

•Defensive End: 9/42 DEs selected in round one made a Pro Bowl. (21%)

•Defensive Tackle: 7/32 DTs selected in round one made a Pro Bowl. (22%)

TL;DR Good defensive ends and good defensive tackles are NOT easy to find.

I think that the higher % of OL making the Pro Bowl is skewed somewhat because teams will only spend a 1st round pick on the OL/TE when a player is "Off the Chart" good! Teams will always spend a 1st on a "Skill" position player, especially one who blows it up at the combine, even though his college tape causes concerns(Gholston).

Look at the number of OL/TE taken in comparison to the number of players taken at the "Skill" positions.

Surprised at the DE/DT failure rate. Must be because of the high % of quality C/G drafted

Yeah and also the first round is where the most talented players generally are picked. So it seems like the poster (from reddit) is saying that being picked in round 1 is what got them to the pro bowl, not the fact that they were extremely highly touted prospects from things that they earned such as game tape, combine numbers and awards at the college level

In order to show significance, the poster would have to break down what players that made the pro bowl, who actually did not deserve to. Then we will find which of those were drafted in round 1. Wilkerson and Richardson were both 1st round picks. Neither has made it on the first ballet yet.
