Jets general manager Joe Douglas proved that he wasn’t afraid to wheel and deal in his first draft, making three trades to help chart a course for the future.

Trader Joe nearly pulled off a fourth trade, too.

The Daily News has learned that the Jets had a trade in place with the Denver Broncos in the third round before the Falcons foiled their plans. Gang Green was willing to drop from No. 79 to No. 83, so Denver could move up to take Temple center Matt Hennessy, whose brother is the Jets long snapper.

However, Atlanta took Hennessy with the No. 78 overall selection, thus nixing the Jets-Broncos deal. Denver wound up taking LSU center Lloyd Cushenberry at No. 83. The Jets took Florida defensive end Jabari Zuniga, who later proclaimed to be the “steal of the draft” at No. 79.

Douglas would have picked up an additional Day 3 pick from Denver. (The Broncos had the No. 178 pick late in the fifth round, which would have been fair compensation to move up from No. 83 to No. 79. They also had the No. 181 overall pick early in the sixth round).

The Raiders took back-to-back wide receivers (Lynn Bowden, Jr., and Bryan Edwards) at Nos. 80 and 81, while the Cowboys grabbed Oklahoma defensive tackle Neville Gallimore at No. 82. So, there’s a solid chance that the Jets would have still landed Zuniga if they traded down.

Ironically, the Broncos were in the market for a center after starter Connor McGovern signed with the Jets in free agency.

Would have been another solid deal, picking up draft capital while probably getting the same guy at 83.
