Start Bridgewater or Darnold?

Dilemma-dilemma, Jets faithful! It’s been two preseason games and both these guys look good. Obviously Bridgewater looks better and has all the looks of being a franchise guy. He’s only 25 years old and he wants to play, he wants to start. He wants to be a cornerstone of the franchise and rightfully so. Darnold on the other hand is the golden boy rookie first round pick and it looks like he’s ready to go also. I say it once again that no he’s not as ready as Bridgewater but he’s close enough to keep your competitive and still learn while he’s on the field.

So what do the Jets do, do they start Darnold and sit Bridgewater until a trade offer comes in? Or do they start Bridgewater and let the chips fall where they may as far as that is concerned? Problem you have with that is if Bridgewater plays good enough then you may not want to get rid of him. Because he could be that much of an assest. Or are you taking a chance on him getting injured again or his play declining and then nobody wanting to trade for him or offer as much for him. So what do the Jets do?

I think that their 3rd preseason game will tell a whole lot. They still have the rest of the preseason and practices to go to make a decision, but for right now it seems pretty clear that both of these quarterbacks should be on the field. This is the dilemma that the Jets have never had and will probably never have it again. Knowing our luck. So what do Jets do in the situation, I ask you? Seems pretty obvious to me that McCown doesn’t need to be on the field and he can just play mentor and prepare for his future coaching career.

For me its Darnold because I doubt Bridgewater is in their long term plans. If you think Darnold can be the guy you go with him. We've never had a tradeable asset at QB and we need picks. With this OL, we aren't going to win more than 6 games with either QB. A very Jet thing to do would be to win 5 games with Bridgewater and lose him at end of season.

Darnold still has a lot to learn obviously but he isn’t the deer in the headlights type. He is well grounded and appears he is ready to go out there and help this team compete. Appears he can give as much as McCown can atleast. Not with experience or leadership but with talent and effort. Darnold doesn’t look like he’s ready to truly compete with Bridgewater but why would he? Bridgewater is a 25 year old that would be a all pro still in Minnesota if he would never broke his leg. So yes Darnold has a ways to go to compete with Bridgewater but his upside might be a lot higher in the long run. If Darnold looked like Sanchez or Geno or the way Allen for the Bills looked running back 20 yards for his life and just wildly throwing the ball anywhere then this wouldn’t be a question. Start Bridgewater and let Darnold sit the entire year. Bridgewater doesn’t appear to be in the Jets future plans and Darnold isn’t that far away so get what you can for Bridgewater, while you still can.

One thing I will say that is opposite of trading Teddy B is don’t do it unless Darnold is 100% the future and 100% ready now. We’ve waited for a FQB for so long and I don’t want to trade away one if the other isn’t going to be able to handle it. I’ve wanted Darnold for 2 years and want him to work out, but I don’t care who leads the Jets as long as it’s to a SB. We have the money to keep 2 QB’s, but we will lose Teddy for nothing. That’s another issue with Mac. He should have locked him up for two years. He is not a horrible GM, but he is not a good one either.

And another thought is to play Teddy B and let him get killed behind the line and not Darnold.

for what it's worth, i heard bridgewater was betting on himself by only taking a one year deal..

I'm hoping they open up the playbook and let Darnold loose in the 3rd game. Has he actually thrown a deep pass yet? All short check down plays and an occasional intermediate pass. You could see the difference between him and Teddy immediately when Teddy took the field.
Darnold has not played QB very long and still has a ways to go.
He is way behind Teddy and both are still behind McCown. Darnold has shown the tools, but has not really been given the reigns. Hopefully that happens soon.

Bridgewater did look better than Darnold against the Skins. But Bridgewater played in the 2nd half. Wasn't he playing more against the 2'a while Darnold played more against the 1's?

Correct. A valid point. And both were playing behind 2nd and 3rd string o-linemen.

Regarding the deep ball question from another poster, Darnold can’t set his feet long enough to throw a deep pass when his protection is pushed aside and he’s got pass rushers in his dish within 3-4 seconds. Darnold’s mobility is going to be a huge factor to his success behind this line.

Love Teddy, his story, his arm, his smarts. Perhaps his injury has made him a more intelligent QB like Aaron Rodgers, only take off if the defense leaves you a lane and then get down/OOB rather than challenging a LB/safety. If we knew what we know now I would have not traded up, taken the guard with the #1, and used the two #2s to fill some of the other holes. But we bet the farm on Darnold and it is what it is, we have to ride it to its logical conclusion. Which means trading Teddy (but NOT in our Division) and going with McCown/Darnold.

Bridgwater/Darnold makes no sense because Teddy could start for the next ten years in which case the Darnold pick will be totally wasted.

Look just like Jetts father said this afternoon on WFAN. Bridgewater should be the starter.......Who cares who are next QB is for the next ten years as long as they are great. As of today Teddy would be my pick

Definitely possible, but I'm going to go with Mac screwed it up.

Well, the rest of the NFL wasn’t exactly jumping at the opportunity to sign Bridgewater after such a horrific knee injury. A lot of teams thought Teddy wouldn’t come back from that injury.

Maccganan turned out to be the smartest GM in the league signing Bridgewater. He’s going to get decent compensation for him now if they decide to trade him. Or, he’s got one of the best QB depth charts in the league if he keeps him.

Regardless, we won’t have Darnold and Bridgewater in 2019. You’ve gotta follow through with the plan and build around the #3 overall pick. He’s the real deal. There’s no way Macc could’ve predicted that both Bridgewater and Darnold would look ready to play this early.

Whatever people might wish, it is very important to remember that Teddy will be a free agent after this year. There is no way that he will be a jet in 2019. That must be factored in.

When he wins a SB he can thank the Jets for giving him his second chance
