‘Stay off Tom’: Refs warned Dolphins on legal Brady hit

As if Tom Brady needs the extra help.

During the Patriots’ beatdown of the Dolphins last week, an official warned Miami linebacker Raekwon McMillan to back off the six-time Super Bowl winner following a legal hit.

“Tom didn’t say anything but the referee said, ‘Stay off Tom,'” McMillan told the Miami Herald. “I put my hands up in the air and said, ‘I got you.’”

The ref’s demand doesn’t come as a complete surprise, as the NFL over the last few seasons has taken more steps to protect its quarterbacks.

That should help Brady in his continuing quest to play until 50.

I always thought that using a situational player to blatantly late hit Brady early in a game was one way to rattle him. Do it situationally. You don't do it on third down. But second and short on their own side of the field, hit him late. And do it with a guy who, if ejected, won't impact the game plan too much.

Also, have your own OL protect your guy long after the ball has been released.

Gimme a break, it's pro football. This whole protecting the QB stuff has gotten way out of hand, and with Brady it has been out of hand for years. Roughing the passer and those obnoxious 5 yard defensive holding calls are ruining the sport. The officials really need to just stop it and let them play football.

that would be a great game plan. I always wanted to see him hit hard and early and that would ruin him for the game.
