FLORHAM PARK, N.J.

Todd Bowles will declare the winner of the New York Jets' quarterback competition next Monday.

And, it would be a total stunner if Josh McCown isn't under center for the regular-season opener on Sept. 10 at Buffalo.

Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty are also in the mix, but the 38-year-old McCown has been the front-runner for the job since signing a one-year, $6 million deal with New York in March.

"We'll discuss it after the game (against the Giants on Saturday night) and come up with our starter," Bowles said Monday after the team held a walkthrough practice. "We'll do it (next) Monday after watching the film."

Hackenberg, a second-round draft pick, never played in a regular-season game as a rookie. He has been given an opportunity this summer to seize the job. But he took a step back with a rocky performance while making his first start at Detroit on Saturday night.

Petty, a fourth-rounder in 2015, has been running third in the competition all summer.

Bowles wouldn't reveal who'll start against the Giants, with starting players usually seeing the bulk of the playing time in the third preseason game. He also declined to say whether the starting QB in that game would indicate who the starter in Week 1 would be.

"I have my own thoughts," Bowles said. "But it's a coaches' decision with all of us."

McCown didn't play against the Lions and has taken only nine preseason snaps. He led the Jets to a touchdown during his only possession in the opener against Tennessee.

"Obviously, I'd be very disappointed if I'm not the guy," McCown said Monday. "But at the same time, we'll support whatever (Bowles) decides is best for the team."

McCown said he was told by the coaching staff late last week that he wouldn't play at Detroit. The decision to sit McCown seemed a bit curious, especially with Bowles saying he thought the veteran still "needs some work."

"We all talked and I understood the situation," McCown said. "Obviously, if you're competitive, you want to play. But you also understand the situation that we've got two young guys that these preseason games can be valuable for because they can really get a lot of time and an opportunity to play."

McCown has worked with the first-team offense most of the summer, although Hackenberg has seen his snaps increase over the past week to get some work with the starters. But McCown has been the clear No. 1 throughout training camp.

The Jets are the 10th team for which McCown has played during an NFL career that is entering its 16th season. He has been a starter, backup and third-stringer at different points, and doesn't downplay the work he can get in the preseason. But he also understands the big picture.

"Would I like to be out there? Yeah," he said. "But I also understand the reasons behind it."

Hackenberg looked to be much improved in the preseason opener at Tennessee from how he played last summer as a wide-eyed rookie. He went 18 of 25 for 127 yards, and while he didn't lead any touchdown drives, he also had no turnovers.

But against the Lions, Hackenberg struggled mightily while going just 2 of 6 for 14 yards. His inexperience showed early when he was sacked and fumbled on the third play when he made the incorrect read on the defense and got pounded by Detroit's Cornelius Washington.

"It was a good learning experience," Hackenberg said. "I thought they were bringing something and they adjusted, and they did a good job of bringing what I thought they weren't going to bring."

Hackenberg has failed to lead the Jets to any points this preseason in 13 possessions, another strong indicator that he likely isn't ready — yet — to be the starter.

"It's his decision, ultimately," Hackenberg said of Bowles. "My job is to come in every day and learn as much as I can and go out and practice. That's my focus from here on out, moving forward — today, tomorrow, next week, next month."

NOTES: Owner Woody Johnson was sworn in as the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom after being confirmed by the Senate three weeks ago. Johnson's brother Christopher assumes the role of running the team's day-to-day operations. ... The Jets practiced indoors, but Bowles said it had nothing to do with the eclipse. He wanted to give the players a lighter day of work to help recover physically, so they held a walkthrough. ... Bowles is uncertain whether RB Matt Forte's ailing hamstring will be healthy in time for him to play in the regular-season opener. "I can't tell you that right now," Bowles said. "I've got to see him out there before I can make that decision." Forte has missed most of camp with the injury, which happened on July 31. ... LBs Darron Lee (illness) and Lorenzo Mauldin (back) sat out practice, as did S Rontez Miles, who was cut under an eye against Detroit.

Toilet is an idiot that will start McCown. But be that as it may, honestly I don't think it will make a damn bit of difference? People forget McCown is 2-20 over the last two seasons as a starting QB. That doesn't exactly make me confident he'll win many games? With how talented depleted this team is, I'd be surprised if they won more than 3 games even with McCown starting.

Bowles is just horrible. He is so far in over his head. This was the predictable line up from day one. The old vet, then the second round pick, then Petty, the after thought. TB is a stubborn guy who has no vision. Wants to pretend he is Bill B. with no resume. Another year of nothing. We are going to start a 37 year old journeyman back-up and ruin two young guys psyche to try and save Mack/Bowle's arse. There never was a competition, the whole thing was a farce. Win your 5 games and I hope it blows up in both their faces.

Why are we even discussing this topic? Obviously this is and was the inevitable. I don't even know what to say or how to feel about this team. If I could drop them and pick another team or stop watching football period I would but I've been a diehard Jets fan for 30 plus years and football fan for longer. So that is that.

Don't know about you guys but the only reason for me to watch this year was to see if Hack could be our guy. Didn't want to wait till games 5 or 8 or 10 or 13 to see it. Yes watching this defense and the other youngsters play and gel is very intriguing but to me it means nothing without a young QB doing it with them. Petty had his has chance last year. So I wasn't to interested in seeing him period. McCown let's not even go there.

Of course it will be McCown. And that is pretty sickening to me.

I won't support this team unless Petty or Hack play. If they screw up the Darnold or #1 pick sweepstakes I will no longer support this shitty organization. If Petty or Hack screw it up by winning a few extra games at least I will see some progress. If these idiots play McCown then they all deserve to never work in the NFL again. All that said its totally expected that McCown would be starter. The Jets have been awful at making decisions for almost 50 years.

I'm in full support of the Suck for Sam movement. I hate to say it, I really do, but its whats best for the future. And Maine, your record for McCown makes me think of Joe Benigno. He was saying a few days ago that the jets are such a cursed and bad organization that for the first time in their history this will be the year that they screw up losing. 2-20 McCown will play out of his mind for 3 weeks and screw this up, retire after this year, and the jets will have the 8th pick and no shot at any of the studs. I laughed when I heard it, then I actually thought about it and said, "oh, God!" out loud.

Historical evidence suggests McCown won't keep the Jets from a top pick.

IMHO Petty should start, hack should be backup and Mc cut. But of course WTFDIK, it's been a foregone conclusion since OTAs. TB is not a smart man...Here's what he said in theNY Post yesterday:

After the loss to the Lions, Bowles did not sound like he was overly impressed with what Petty had done.

“Well, he moved the ball, but again, we didn’t score any points,” Bowles said of Petty. “So, when you don’t score any points, then you can’t win ballgames. But he had some good throws and some good plays here and there.”

To show how clueless - and close-minded - Bowles is, note that he completely discounts the two FGs that Petty enabled them to get. Last time I checked FGs = Points. But I guess an idiot "D"-obsessed coach wouldn't understand that.

Well as far as I can tell, McCown has 7pts, Petty 6 and Hack still at zero. Good god the Jets suck!!!

They suck because of a group effort among turds. Mac destroyed this roster because he's so fucking dumb. Toilet made sure it looked HORRIBLE on the field. They really are a dynamic duo.

This team was and always would be mediocre without a complete demolition of this team. Mac and Bowles probably will need to be gone. So far two studs fell into Mac's lap and he hasn't done much else.

The one thing I will say and others may not see it this way, TB has given Hack the opportunity to take the starter job. He just appears that he hasn't been good enough to do so. Whether that's because McCown took more reps from him or he just doesn't have it. I don't know but Hackenburg playing at 3 quarters in the first pre season game and the second game he started. It appears he got more than enough reps during training camp and sat all last year. What more was TB, the QB coach and OC supposed to do? Besides surround the kid with a better oline and skilled players obviously, but with this youth movement, you gotta work with what you got.

Probably one of the fairest quotes I have read so far on the subject.

Not much. But once again, this team is NOT going to win this season anyway. So what's the point in starting the guy who won the competition? This team is so talent depleted that ideally they should be chasing the number 1 pick. What sense does it make to install McCown as the starter and possibly jeopardize that chance at the 1st pick?

Moreover, the Jets CS needs to see once and for all if Hack or Petty or both are the future of this franchise. Otherwise, it's time to cut bait with them. They will not get an idea about either of them when they are on the bench. So in a vacuum, I can see your point, but you are leaving out the long term plans that SHOULD be at play here?

And YES, I do believe both Hack and Petty should have been given MANY more weapons to work with. But that part of the problem is all on Mac. That's the idiot that opted to cut so many reliable vets. That's the guy that opted to neglect the OL for two seasons running now. So now we have a talent depleted team with a downright dangerously BAD OL for these young kids to play behind. I feel the need to question Mac's sanity for doing something so stupid.

Now, the other side says now they'll have an 80 million dollar war chest to use in FA in 2018. But honestly, would signing a few FA OL had made that much of a difference in the overall war chest? I think not. Not to mention, this just isn't fair? I'm sorry, but you do not send a young kid out on the field with nothing to work with. Well, now we have no choice.

This is called the very example of PISS POOR general managing. It's nonsense like this that has gotten this team into trouble since about 2010.......
