The Back-up Quarterback battle: Bryce Petty vs Geno Smith

Now that Ryan Fitzpatrick is our starting quarterback for the 2016 campaign (THANK GOD!), the team can now focus on the battle between Geno Smith and Bryce Petty for number two.

Many have stated that Bryce Petty isn't ready to level up to number two and that Geno has made strides. Make no mistake about it, what we learned within these past three weeks is that Mike Maccagnan and Todd Bowles play very close to the vest and will not allow outsiders to know what is truly going on.

Geno must do something he hasnt done ever in this league and thats earn a roster spot. Many pundits just go on with the notion that he's experienced and thats an automatic for Bowles to pencil him in as Fitzpatricks back up. I couldnt disagree more. Bryce Petty was drafted as a player that needed to be groomed. 2015 was a red shirt year. Now with the selection of Christian Hackenberg as a lock for the number three QB, Petty must expedite his learning curve.

We shall see how both players do in this quarterback war. Personally i honestly feel the organization is without a doubt pulling for Bryce to beat out Geno. Its their player and not costing the team much. Geno on the other hand is on the last year of his rookie contract.
On top of that, the team really hasn't endorsed Geno. Two years in a row he drafts developmental players at QB, if Petty excels, no way Geno Smith makes the team.

I don't think the drafting of Hackenberg or Petty means anything in regards to Geno Smith, especially for the 2016 season. Everyone also said that Hackenberg meant that the organization had soured on Petty. This is all fan speculation.

And as far as not earning a roster spot, we'll have to disagree there, too. Geno has not been the unmitigated disaster that some fans say he has. He looked decent in his first season, and then had a bad year with limited weapons. With that said, he's gotta beat out the two youngsters in camp, and show that he's a more viable #2 than both. As I've said before, you're REALLY rolling the dice with Petty/Hackenberg as your #2 option. That's waving the white flag more so than if Geno were put in, given his proven yet limited success, and better overall offense around him.

this regime really has no ties to Geno Smith, but doesn't mean he is out the door just yet... so many things could happen from now to the start of the season, basically injuries not just on our team that could be a major factor on whether we keep 3 or 4 QBs this season...

so if Fitz didn't sign, they would be competing for the starting job ? Do you really believe that?

do you really believe maccagnan would perfer to cut ties with petty, (who he drafted as a project) instead of a guy both he & bowles have been saddled with??

granted, petty has to step up & show his bosses they didn't waste a 4 round pick on him..

No it doesn't. Beyond a doubt the Fitz signing changes the landscape. Petty has to show he belongs.

I wish I could find the sucker to wager me a huge sum that Geno is not the odd man out.

Waving a white flag rolling with the Petty as our number two is also speculation as well. We don't know what he has.

All the stuff that we've been reading regarding this team via the media has been pure none-sense. Just look at how they just assumed how far apart the talks were between Mo and Fitz respectively. Then out of no where they were both signed.

The actions will speak much louder than what we all think how much faith the organization has in Bryce Petty. Once the bullets start flying for real in about two weeks with the 1st pre-season games, thats where we will have a clear indication on who will be Fitz's back up.

I also have to respectfully disagree on the drafting of the two QB's. If the front office was completely convinced that Geno had a chance at taking over for this team, they wouldn't have taken a chance on developing two young QB's who have extreme potential between the ears. It would be just wasting their time.

The coaches know what they have in Geno. They see him every day. They will never say publicly if he's stinking it up because it's just not their style. But its clear evidence that we can read between the tea leaves that they want him off the team once they see Petty's progression or atleast match where Geno is right now. Thats where i see this 1 year deal with Fitz playing such a huge role. In 2017, Bryce would already have two years under his belt in this offense. Mac wants a young QB to take the lead. Why not have two of them compete, knowing the system and having them under contract beyond 2017. While Geno is gone after this season.

Now if Petty's play is god awful this pre season and Geno blows it out of the water, then the choice is simple, you cut Petty. Hackenberg will obviously get a red shirt year by default. Kid has no business stepping onto the field this year.

Just let it play out folks.....just let it play out

Agree. Although I would think that Geno is the solid pick as the primary backup, things could change quickly as we saw last year. I'm just looking forward to an injury-free and competitive camp. Hopefully, all of the young QBs progress at a good rate and cement their place in line for the coming years.

So Petty has about a month to make up a ton of ground. Bowles has said Geno would start if Fits wasn't around. Of course, some only pick and choose the comments from Bowles that they like. Fitz has always been an injury risk, so I don't see them picking a backup who has never taken an NFL snap

As far as drafting QB's, when the Packers drafted Hundley, was that them not having faith in Rodgers?
If a GM drafts a QB who they believe can be a good Player that only helps the team. If both Petty and Smith show that they can both play in the preseason, thats a bonus for the Jets. Maybe they can turn Geno into another draft pick or Petty. They are both around the same age and Geno does have starting experience intros league.

Excellent post.

Petty needs to show something though

All indications from mac, Bowles and Gailey has said Petty is making the progress they want and expected.... All the other nonsense about him his Media (Mehta and Cimini mostly) rhetoric and the usual suspects of Jets fans with their uninformed POV....

And listen IDK where Petty is at but I definitely saw progress in training camp last year from Exhibition Game 1 to Game 4...... But if he progresses he will be on the team and my gut says he'll be the backup... If he hasn't they try and sneak him to the PS..... We will know in about 40 days.

Jets could decide to move on from Geno Smith or 2015 fourth-rounder Bryce Petty after re-signing Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Even with Fitz back in the fold, the Jets have questions at quarterback. Second-round pick Christian Hackenberg is guaranteed a roster spot, but he is unlikely to be ready for a backup role this year. Smith could serve as the backup, but keeping him would require New York to either cut Petty after just one season or retain four quarterbacks, which would hurt the depth at another position. Ultimately, we expect Petty to be the odd man out.

I never said Cimini and Mehta ONLY.... I said Mostly which means other media sources run with this as well.

This regime is not the old regime..... Everything the media reported in the past from 2009 till Mac and Bowles has been pretty accurate. Because the sources have given them the good information...

Since Mac absolutely nothing the media has speculated about has been anywhere near fact... They have no clue what's going on with the minds of the Front Office now..... Let the Fitz situation and the Wilk situation highlight. Media has reported mins before both deals got done at the 11th hour that their sources say no deal for Wilk and he will either be franchised again next year or sources say Jets may let him walk... Wrong and obviously you know all the reports yesterday on how the Jets are rolling with Geno yada yada yada...... Wrong again..

So either the Jets FO ain't saying s*&t to the media or the are giving them false info on purpose....

So any report from the media to me is worthless.... I'm just gonna take what they say to the media with their quotes and interviews at face value but wait and see what happens... Logic says they will want to continue to develop Petty and Hackenberg and keep a vet like smith to backup just in case.... How they do it.... we shall see.... My gut says they want Petty to be backup level ready and jettison Geno ASAP...
