Now that Ryan Fitzpatrick is our starting quarterback for the 2016 campaign (THANK GOD!), the team can now focus on the battle between Geno Smith and Bryce Petty for number two.
Many have stated that Bryce Petty isn't ready to level up to number two and that Geno has made strides. Make no mistake about it, what we learned within these past three weeks is that Mike Maccagnan and Todd Bowles play very close to the vest and will not allow outsiders to know what is truly going on.
Geno must do something he hasnt done ever in this league and thats earn a roster spot. Many pundits just go on with the notion that he's experienced and thats an automatic for Bowles to pencil him in as Fitzpatricks back up. I couldnt disagree more. Bryce Petty was drafted as a player that needed to be groomed. 2015 was a red shirt year. Now with the selection of Christian Hackenberg as a lock for the number three QB, Petty must expedite his learning curve.
We shall see how both players do in this quarterback war. Personally i honestly feel the organization is without a doubt pulling for Bryce to beat out Geno. Its their player and not costing the team much. Geno on the other hand is on the last year of his rookie contract.
On top of that, the team really hasn't endorsed Geno. Two years in a row he drafts developmental players at QB, if Petty excels, no way Geno Smith makes the team.
