The Jamal Adams situation

This could get ugly if not handled properly. It's incumbent upon Douglas to maintain an open line of communication with the All-Pro safety. They got their lines crossed last fall at the trading deadline, infuriating Adams. That might have been a rookie mistake by Douglas, who found himself engaged in trade talks after telling Adams he had no plans to deal him.

From the player perspective, Douglas has sent mixed messages this offseason, professing he wants to make Adams "a Jet for life" while dragging his feet in contract talks. From all indications, the Jets don't want to extend his deal until 2021, the final year. If that's the case, Douglas needs to be clear with Adams, a personality who could become a distraction if he feels as if he's getting jerked around.

It could be moot anyway if Adams is hellbent on getting a new deal by the start of the year. Douglas' resolve will be tested if Adams stages a training camp holdout and/or requests a trade.

There will be no great answer for Adams. He won't sign for a team friendly deal this year or next. Douglas has proven that he won't break the bank, particularly for a safety. The latter statement hasn't been proven yet, but I'm guessing he has a value in mind for a box safety and he won't budge much. He will whine about not being treated fairly, skip camps and either play lights out or get injured because he came back out of shape. All the while he will get in front of microphones or scribes like Mehta and bad mouth the team management and ownership.

It seems as if there is some serious disconnect in communication between the FO and the players.

Belichick runs a franchise with a number of recent Superbowls which has won the AFC East every year since the Stone Age. He gets a winner's premium when dealing with players. OTOH the only reason to play for the Jets is the money.

I dont think his agent would make up something like that. I'm sure there's some disconnect in communication. Perhaps Douglas said we will discuss it after the new year or early next year and Adam's took it as meaning January while Douglas was thinking next season (August-Sept). After Free agency to see where the payroll was at. There's definitely been miscommunication between Adam's and the FO before. It's an ugly situation that hopefully gets smoothed over sooner than later

IMO, he definitely won’t reach 6 sacks again.Last year he had 3 sacks vs a banged up Washington Oline, with a slow footed rookie QB.
He had 2 sacks vs. the Giants and another rookie QB with an aweful Oline.
Douglas is bringing in Pass rushers to sack the QB not his SS.
He’s still gonna blitz, but I doubt we see those numbers again.

i would add that there is now a year of tape on how williams used him as a blitzer as well..

adams is a good ballplayer, he's just not the the once in a generation kind of player the media/PFF have desperately tried to create.. i'm sorry but that's ridiculous, IMHO..

I believe Jamal Adams is the best Strong Safety in the league. He's an impact player and an All-Pro at the position. He will be for years to come if he stays healthy. He's smart, instinctive, aggressive and tough. He does deserve a new contract, I'll give him that. Is not the time to be asking for it? No. Bad optics, bad timing. And he's got two years left on his original deal, plus a franchise year behind that. There's probably a compromise in there somewhere, where they can up the bonuses for this year if he hits certain milestones, and renegotiate next year. I believe it will get done. He's worth at least a 1st and 2nd rounder, maybe more than that in a trade.

The seminal question seems - will Adams ever be happy contractually(with new contract) OR in 2 years is he back whining. That is what Douglas MUST determine.

Thus - one of the most important assessments a GM must make in today's NFL is:

1) Will a player given a huge K be appreciative/satisfied or just a perpetual disruption.
AND/OR
2) Given a huge contract - will a player then just mail it in(i.e. Revis, Johnson etc)
