The New York Jets have a new general manager.
After spending the better part of five days in Florham Park meeting with executives, New York made it official Tuesday night naming Mike Maccagnan the team's general manager. Maccagnan had spent the last 15 years with the Houston Texans organization.
The Jets confirmed the news via the team's official twitter account.
"In my line of work, having the chance to serve as a general manager is what you work towards your entire career,” Maccagnan said in a statement released by the Jets. “Having a supportive owner who is passionate and committed to delivering a winning team to the fans is one of the keys to building a successful organization.
"As with all teams, there are some areas we need to address, but we’re going to hire the right head coach, evaluate our personnel, and work together to build a football operation to get the New York Jets back on the winning track.”
A native of Hightstown, New Jersey, Maccagnan began his career in NFL Europe back in 1990. Then called the "World League," Maccagnan was a league scout and director of player personnel for the London Monarchs. After a year with the organization, he joined the Canadian Football League's Ottawa Rough Riders in 1994 as the team's scouting and director of player personnel.
Like the Monarchs, Maccagnan wasn't in Ottawa long. In 1994, after just one season with the Rough Riders, Maccagnan was hired by the Washington Redskins as a college scout. A year later, he was promoted as one of the team's pro scouts, a position he held until 2000.
Following the 2000 season, Maccagnan left Washington and joined the expansion Texans. During his near two decades with the team, Maccagnan worked as the coordinator of college scouting (2000-2010), assistant director of college scouting (2010-2011) and director of college scouting (2011-2014).
Maccagnan contributed to the drafting of 12 Pro Bowl players during his time with the Texans, selecting the likes of defensive end Mario Williams, defensive lineman J.J. Watt, running back Arian Foster (undrafted) and receiver Andre Johnson among others.
“We interviewed a number of impressive, qualified candidates, but Mike Maccagnan clearly stood out,” Jets owner Woody Johnson said. “Mike’s attention to detail, strong personnel background and collaborative approach to evaluating players made it clear that he is the right choice to be the next General Manager of the New York Jets.
When New York fired John Idzik at the end of this season, Johnson indicated he wanted to find a candidate that had more of a background in player personnel. Idzik was known more as a fiance and salary cap specialist. During his two years with the team, Idzik succeeded in getting the Jets out of their financial struggles, but did not find adequate talent, leading to his firing.
After the season, Johnson hired consultants and former general managers Ron Wolf and Charley Casserly to aid in the finding, interviewing and hiring process of the Jets next general manager. Both former executives praised Maccagnan's ability to evaluate talent.
"I was impressed by Mike Maccagnan’s professionalism, intelligence, preparation, awareness and attention to detail," Wolf said. "He has a great understanding of this league and the skill and ability to evaluate personnel."
Casserly has been involved professionally with Maccagnan dating back to the two's time in Washington and Houston. Casserly was the Redskins general manager when Maccagnan was hired as a college scout. In 2000, when Maccagnan joined the Texans, Casserly was the one that hired him then, too.
"Mike Maccagnan is an outstanding football man, one who is highly organized, and an excellent evaluator," Casserly said. "He is very thorough in his preparation and will do a terrific job for the Jets."
