The Jets are as bad as expected

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Bills aren't a good team. Competent, maybe, but far from good. They spent the offseason purging their roster of players with trade value. They want assets they can use to land a quarterback in next April's NFL Draft.

But as bad as the Bills may be, as much as they may have an eye set on the future, their tank doesn't hold a candle to that of the team six hours south.

The top takeaway from the NFL's opening day: Yes, the Jets, who fell to the Bills, 21-12, in their season opener, are that bad.

"There were coaching mistakes and there were playing mistakes," coach Todd Bowles said. "We're all involved."

Jets need more from Muhammad Wilkerson
Let's start with the offense. Josh McCown is, well, Josh McCown. A fiery competitor and leader, but a below-average quarterback. He played the entire game ... and finished with two interceptions, an average of 4.7 yards per attempt, and a passer rating of 56.3.

But he didn't receive much help. The Jets had no running game to speak of as Matt Forte and Bilal Powell (whenever he managed to sneak into the game) were both kept in check. The two routinely ran into 8- and 9-man fronts. They finished with 38 total yards.

And the reason for those loaded boxes? Not a soul at New Era Field feared the wideouts outside. The Bills pressed the likes of Jermaine Kearse, ArDarius Stewart and Robby Anderson. They dared the Jets to pass. The Jets just couldn't.

"I'm disappointed," McCown said. "We've got to be better on third down. We've got to keep ourselves in manageable situations. We've got to do a better job of protecting the football."

How did Jets quarterback prospects Josh Allen, Josh Rosen, and Sam Darnold perform this weekend? Will the Jets select any of them in 2018 NFL Draft?

But wait, it only gets worse: The Jets' strength looked more like an Achilles' heel.

All last season, Bowles watched his defense surrendered big play after big play. This year was supposed to be different. The Jets drafted safeties Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye. They signed ex-Cowboys cornerback Morris Claiborne. They brought back defensive ends Leonard Williams and Muhammad Wilkerson, linebacker Darron Lee.

On Sunday they surrendered 483 total yards to the Bills. Eighteen of Buffalo's 72 plays went for at least 10 yards, including eight of 20 or more. The Jets missed tackles, blew assignments and looked completely overmatched.

Adams was asked after the game if the Bills did anything to surprise the Jets.

"No," he said. "Not at all."

The Jets still couldn't stop a thing.

"They came out and gashed us, it seemed like, at will," cornerback Morris Claiborne said. "Obviously, we've got a lot of things that we have to work on as a unit, as a whole ball club. Half of the things, I feel like it was just we beat ourselves. We missed that tackle. We got out of our gap. Just missing tackles, period. Some of the times, we were in great calls.

"Us as players, we've got to go fix it."

It wasn't just the players.

Bowles had yet another mental breakdown. Nearing the anniversary of the game he forgot to go for two, on Sunday, he willfully didn't punt. With four minutes left in the fourth quarter, trailing by nine, and facing a 4th and 2 near midfield, the third-year coach took his offense off the field and sent punter Lachlan Edwards on.

The Jets had a full complement of timeouts, he said. He wanted to play field position, he said.

The next time the Jets touched the ball, the game was all-but over.

"We thought we could stop them and get the ball back," Bowles said. "Simple as that."

... Simple as that ...

The Jets aren't good enough to get by on talent and playing smart football. They need things to bounce their way. Going for it would have swung the momentum New York's way, yet Bowles chose to play it safe. it didn't work.

This is, of course, just one game. An awful lot can change. It's just hard to see how this doesn't start to spiral out of control. Next week, the Jets travel across the country to play the Raiders, fresh off their 26-16 win over the Titans. Oakland's a Super Bowl contender.

If the Jets couldn't keep Tyrod Taylor in check, what will Derek Carr do? If the Jets struggled to run against the Bills' front, what will they manage against Khalil Mack and Bruce Irvin?

Buckle up, Jets fans. It's going to be a long year.

A long year ?
i think it's longer than that

LOL

Based on their performance yesterday, I feel safe saying they won't win a single game? I sure hope I am wrong, but this is well beyond, this is all-time BAD..........

Much worse than some of the lean years in the 70's and maybe worse than 96 when we were 1-15. At least that year we had some young and very good talent on that team. This team is so void in so many areas. What is similar though is our head coaches - Bowles vs Kotie, C. Winner, Holtz... UGH!

I hope you're right.
Tired of being middle of the pack shitty. Always with the 5th or 6th overall pick.
Then picking bums with that, just out of reach of a franchise QB, pick. Gholston, Robertson, Milliner, shit even Sanchez.
0-16 should get the ball rolling.
No more Bowles, maybe no more Mac.
ensure the #1 overall pick without having to trade up and give away sorely needed draft picks.
Finally, pick the right player/players.
Then be that 6 win team but with the arrow pointing up, instead of always pointing down.

Let's all hope and pray we finish 1-15 or 0-16. this is the year to suck. More so then in 96. At least there are 3-4 would be Franchise QB's coming out. I am fine with being awful this year

I couldn't agree more. This is the time and the draft to fall flat. Look around the league. If you think there's a mad rush for QB's now, wait a few years. That whole class of 2004 (Eli, Ben, Rivers) will have ridden off into the sunset. Not to mention Palmer, Dalton, Brees and the perennial QB Seekers: Browns, 49ers, and Bills.
In short, in about 2 - 4 years half the league will be targeting FQB's, and the Jets will still be drafting failed DB's

The only upshot is I cant wait to hear the Giants fans that piss and moan about Eli when they don't have him taking every snap

Continue to have Todd Bowles as head coach, WOODY DO NOT FIRE HIM.
We've all been through bad years and they were all for nothing. Not this time around. We finally have a shot at a legitamate QB. Weather its Darnold, Rosen, Mayfield, Jackson..whom ever you fancy, we have a shot at the best QB in the country when its all said and done.

Punting on 4rth and 7 in the fourth...
Continuing to feed an old ass Forte'...
Placing your best RB in punt protection...
Having Hackenberg be a backup in game one in which Petty absolutely won the job..
Going for a 2 point conversion in the third quarter..

Everything is going according to plan.

All of this is fine and dandy, but Rosen and Darnold both can opt to stay in school. Even if they all do come out for the draft, how confident are you that the Jets will select the right one?

well, lets hope if we do end up with a shot at the best QB in the country, a 300 DE/DT isn't the best player available in the jets brain trust eyes..

that, or an injury prone CB..

or a DE that we will play at OLB..

You guys know I been watching this team for 50 years and I seen some dogs.... Yesterday, my wife asked why I was so calm and not red in the face screaming at the TV (smile everyone). I said honey, this is a shitty team and maybe the worst I have ever seen. Need I say anymore?

I sure hope Toilet gets fired? What better could you ask for? The Jets tanked the right way, got a franchise QB and they get to hit the reset button with another HC?

I've been willing to give Bowles a pass for last year, chalking it up to growing pains as a Head Coach, and an aging team. He owns the dysfunction in the locker room from last year and has made a concerted effort to change the culture. To his credit, I think he has done that. And I am still willing to see how this year plays out, whether this team improves, particularly on defense before I am ready to go through yet another coaching/regime change. But yesterday was bad coaching on several levels, no other way to say it. I definitely lost a little faith in the Head Coach Todd Bowles can become based on yesterday's performance.

As far as a coaching change is concerned - I continue to ask the question - who are we getting to replace him? Everyone wants him gone tomorrow and a new staff, but the only candidate I've heard is Westoff, and he's not getting the job. Interesting idea, but it's not happening. Woody would have offered it to him already in prior years. Another "hot" coordinator is just another roll of the dice and that has never worked out for us. So someone please name one or two legitimate coaching candidates that a) established head coaches college or pro and b) want to come here - besides Harbaugh, Gruden and Cowher. I don't think any of them would come here, but those are all easy ones. Whoever is calling for the next coaching regime change immediately - put forth a name or two. Right now, with the current state of affairs, I'm not sure a lot of coaches want this job.

But that aside - yesterday I thought the defense was horrible for most of the game against a pretty bad team. I saw no aggressiveness in play calling on either side of the ball. I can say Jamal Adams came to play, the kid plays hard on every down. The team played hard for sure, they just made a lot of mistakes, and the coaches didn't give them a chance to win the game. The players said the defensive calls were right on, they did not execute the calls. That could be. But I would like to see this defense take more chances and dial up some blitzes. It was Tyrod Taylor not Joe Montana back there.

On offense - very few plays downfield, the o-line was terrible, and the play calling was again way too conservative. The offensive game plan made little sense to me most of the game.
Here's where I am - if we are going to stink this entire year, then just play the kids. Put Petty out there. Put Hackenberg out there. Let Hanson and Stewart play every down and get reps. Put Jordan Leggett in at TE and let him run around. And why the hell was Powell on the bench the entire first half? Forte looked slow. If this team is going to be an expansion team on offense, then just play the kids and let's see what we've got. There's no guarantee with any of the QBs in the draft, and right now we don't have them on the roster. So let's see what we do have for the next 15 games. Then, you can draft and build the team accordingly. I have no problem with this team going 1-15 and going into the draft next year knowing exactly what we have on the roster with the young players, and what we need.

That should be the game plan - enough of this McCown, Fitzpatrick stuff. Just play the kids, and never mind about the record. If you want to truly evaluate Bowles, you look at the young talent at the end of the year and see if this team is making significant strides. That's the fair way to evaluate him this year. But you can do that if you keep going with these stop gap players this year. Last year, ok. They wanted to take one more shot. That's not this year's team..

Of course they are and here's what makes it worse. I love this youth movement rebuild mode their doing but they're killing the whole idea of this by starting McCown. What's the point of this rebuilding in the first place, if they are going to play a 38 year old below average QB? If Hack was playing, (even Petty to a certain extent) not only would I be watching every play of every game, I'd be routing like hell for them to win. Simply because they're screwing this whole thing up by playing McCown, not only am I routing for McCown to get injured so Hack can play but as long as McCown is playing, I want them to be beat by 40 every game. I'm so freaking tired of routing for a above average but can't win the big one team because the QB is holding us back. I also tired of routing for a mediocre to horrible team. Still with no franchise QB.

I hope you are right. What is the point of being mediocre and picking 12th?

Worst case scenario they still wouldn't have a prayer of being good enough to be picking 12th. Forget about that. That will never happen.

But losing ALL of your games is actually hard? I'm hesitant to say that about the Jets. You always tend to run into at least one team that just got caught on the wrong day?

But then I look at this team (if you can call it that?), and I see BAD players, BAD coaching, and a BAD GM? Is there anything left that could be characterized as being good?

You could say the defense has talent, right? But then you try to understand the Jets defense giving up 483 yards of total offense? I ultimately say to myself, "This team has talent on defense, but their coach is atrocious and does NOT know how to use it.".

So all in all, the Jets right now are the epitome of a TRAIN WRECK. Whenever something like this happens, you have to question the competence of every figure head involved? Are they the right people to lead a reformation? They actually made this team, this bad? How can I possibly trust them to make it better? But that's the question that Woody faces and I sure hope he thinks about that long and hard.........
