The Jets select Christian Hackenberg with the 51st pick

Draft a QB every year high, and develop them. This kid's got talent. Between Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg, I feel like we're gonna get one right here. Might not be this season, but it's on the horizon. Maybe I'm gullible, but I really feel good about the Jets finally developing a quality QB for the first time in a long time.

Is there ANY chance this kid starts this year? I'm not saying he should, but last year we KNEW Petty needed time to learn how to be an NFL QB. Yet this guy supposedly showed 1st round talent, so is it even POSSIBLE for Gailey to "fix a few things" or are we going into this knowing he'll be on the bench?

Again, not asking what SHOULD happen -- just curious if "Sanchez 2.0" is in the realm of possibility . . .

Great video and I hope fans pay attention. Don't know how great he will be, but he has arm talent and we haven't had one of those in a long time.

I think they did in his Freshman year. Last two years the team was basically Texas State Armadillos. He has measurable. PSU had awful coaching and worse players.

My theory on the Hackenberg pick

My theory on the Hackenberg pick

2-3 years away from starting....

Petty maybe ready this year or 1 year away....

Sign Fitz..... Cut Geno

Let Petty Battle Fitz for the job this year.... if he wins it great... Really judge where he is at in camp... maybe fitz beats him out but Petty is close. Petty takes over 2017... See how the year plays out and how Hackenberg develops.... If he develops and Petty does as well Keep the better one trade the other.....

All while still drafting another guy to keep the Pipeline going.

Just how I think Mac is thinking

Could you expound on your 2-3 year prediction?

Will it take that long for him to get up to NFL speed? Or to get "fixed" after the past two years?

He supposedly did well in a pro-style offense as a freshman, so I don't see why he'd need multiple years to grow into the role. And to be honest, if he needs multiple years to shake off the stink, he's probably a lost cause anyway.

Having said that, I have NO clue what I'm talking about, so any insight would be greatly appreciated:global (45):

I wonder if they just say screw you Fitz and go with Geno for one year. Not ideal, but cheaper. At least Geno was finally able to sit a year and learn. I'm delirious.

OK, i'm encouraged by your post.. sounds like (to me at least) mac's view of the kids performance after his senior year was an indictment on the program/talent.. as in, essentially "mitigating circumstances??"

I disagree about Hackenberg's readiness compared to Petty's. A huge part of whether a guy is prepared to step in or not at QB is system, and Hackenberg had the experience of playing in O'Brien's pro-style offense, whereas Petty played in a prototype college system at Baylor. To me, Hackenberg is far more ready now than Petty was at this time last year. There is no way there's a 1-2 year gap between them.

So early this afternoon I told my Dad we'll probably take Hackenberg.
Can't believe I was right.

We've heard all the criticisms of Hackenberg, no reason to rehash them, but let me give you some reasons why its not a bad gamble in my view. I would not have taken a QB in that spot, but if we were going to take one, IMO we took the right one (Hack > Cook) and I said so before we made the pick, when we discussed the possibility as the pick was approaching.

So, a few reasons why this has a chance to work:

1. The kid has the prototypical size you look for in an NFL QB, 6' 5"/225, thats the way you draw it up.

2. He has a cannon for an arm, strongest arm in the draft, he makes every throw in the book including the deep outs and he throws frozen ropes, and that matters in the northeast when the wind starts kicking up at MetLife, Gillette and Buffalo. Last year Fitz got exceedingly lucky in that regard, other than the last game it was like an Indian Summer at his games.

3. If you watched Hackenberg his freshman year, without question you would have felt like you were watching the future #1 Overall Pick in the draft, similar to if you watched the freshman from UCLA this year. He was that good.

4. Since his freshman year its been awful, no two ways about it, its been stunning to watch the decline of a player who was universally viewed as a potential #1 Overall Pick as a freshman, but in fairness its not ALL his fault. The Penn State O-line has been dreadful over the past two years and its nearly gotten this kid killed. Honestly, my biggest concern is he might already be shell-shocked from the beating he has taken. He has been sacked a hundred times ... A HUNDRED TIMES ... by far the most in the nation, and NO QUARTERBACK can excel in those conditions. Even Great QB's look like garbage if they are getting pummeled to that degree.

So again, I'm not saying there's a good chance, but I do think there's a real chance this could workout a lot better than most people expect it too. Its not the pick I would have made, but its not a bad gamble.

Lets also remember his last two years with PSU he was out of shotgun a lot and his footwork suffered. That PSU team was barely a D1 team.

Can we put to rest this silly fabrication that PSU was the "Texas State Armadillos" during Hack's time there. Per ESPN, their recruiting rankings were: 24, 24, and 14 in the country prior to each of Hackenberg's three seasons as the starter. Tons of talent.

That's pretty darn good by any standard. His freshman season he was throwing to Allen Robinson who is currently one of the NFL's brightest young stars at the position. The last two seasons he has been throwing to Chris Godwin who is projected as a 1st rounder when he decides to come out.

So if ppl want to make the excuse about coaching changes and system changes, fine. But the excuse that he had no talent around him is just completely inaccurate.

I'll trust in TB and Mac and I'm rooting for this kid but I'm VERY CONCERNED. Taking him in the 2nd round with the way he played over the past two years. Also with 9" hands in the NY-NJ stadium and with our weather, I'm VERY CONCERNED! I'm trying to figure out who I see this kid in resemblance to but I can't put my hands on it right now. Maybe Kerry Collins or Jeff George at worst or Drew Bledsoe or Phillip Rivers at best. I just hope either Hackenberg or Petty steps up or we will find ourselves right back here next year debating which QB the Jets drafted this DAMN time. We need a franchise QB as much as any suffering team so I'm rooting for you Hack. So prove me wrong and shut me up, PLEASE!

If it isnt hijacking the thread, can we handicap the QB race

Hackenberg - big edge is freshman year - as a true freshman - one year of pro style experience with an NFL coach - demonstrated that he possessed physical and mental tools.. Big downside is failure as SO and JR

Petty - good physical tools - no pro style experience except a year in camp with the Jets

Geno - good physical tools - but has failed in actual NFL experience

Its a horserace - who's in the lead on the day they all show up for OTAs? who starts the season as the QB? who ends the season as the QB?

IF Fitz signs, who is gone by the end of camp?
