The origins of the AFL

The NFL today is because of the AFL. TV-players names on jersey's -etc. I remember the cool uniforms & AFL was big on Civil rights towards Black Players & thanks to Hunt- Al Davis President of the League & new owner of Raiders brought all these new fresh ideas at the time to create the NFL of today. In the post game locker room of Super Bowl III, when Joe Namath told Pete Rozelle, "Welcome to the American Football League" I was fahklempt.

LMAO, Davis only Commish of AFL & not the merged AFL-NFL. Sorry you didnt know that. But yes I have a one Titans T Shirt ,but closet filled with Jets shirts & coats & memorabilia case filled with Namath auto Helmet, Topps cards auto, book auto, Sack exchange , & so on. Pete Rozelle was a jerk & control freak even telling Namath he couldnt even be part owner in a bar. But hey I thought maybe some of you would be interested in the AFL-JETS history & why NFL is this way today. If your not interested, dont read it . It wasnt meant to offend anyone like you mfs62. AFL is what made me become a JETS fan in growing up in Alaska, it was exciting style of play. More than NFL run-run-run.

You bet I was offended. As someone who followed the AFL from its beginning, how could I not know Al Davis was only the commissioner of the AFL? And if you re-read my post, you'll see I said Pro Football and NOT the NFL. And I meant it!

I believe Davis was the best because his signing of All Americas from under the noses of the NFL and getting a national TV contract for the new league forced the merger. Pete Rozelle was smug and complacent, like the NFL owners who ignored the AFL and thought it would go away. The were condescending to the new league, just like Gastineau was to me by saying I didn't know that.

I appreciate the link, and I intend to explore the site more carefully as time permits. He may have LOLed at my post, but I certainly didn't LOL at his. He may have grown u watching on TV, but I guarantee my viewing was more pleasurable. My neighbor was Lee Grosscup, who quarterbacked the team for a while. He got me tickets - in the same section as the players' wives. You never believed the scenery in the Polo Grounds could be so beautiful.
