The sad comprehension of a former GM

Replying to Mel Kiper mock draft I have a real problem with his reasoning on stating lack of production of a player. Because it is NOT sacks that is not the only way to be an effective EDGE rusher. His mindset is Travon Walker is the next coming of Vernon Gholston is pick who he was suckered into taking in the '08 draft. He was fooled about drafting an athletic minded player who was a 4-3 DE that failed to convert to a 3-4 OLB. Some player don't or can't make the switch no matter how athletic they are, that should of been known by the G.M. who selected him, but ignorance and wayward thinking is to blame the prospect rather take a good look in the mirror to realize he pulled the trigger thinking the rival division foe was going to select him when it was just a smoke screen.

Nowadays there are many reasons players are valuable. Sacks are not the only reason a player is worth a high pick, being a good team mate understanding his role staying home filling gaps, setting the edge against the run while rushing up field to pressure the QB to move him off his spot opening the door for team mates who are in other spots to make the tackle/sack.

When a guy has 6.0 sacks, he sucks? The same guy has 7.5 tackles for loss, still sucks? The same guy has 36 QB pressures, still suck? He had seven hurries against Alabama in the championship game. How did that turn out? When a QB does not have time to scan the field, when a QB can not set his feet what is the value of that?

I think that Gholston's were much bigger than being able to make a transition to 3-4. If it were only that simple, he would've had a decent career.

just because he had 14 sacks the previous year at Ohio State, more production from the pressures of his team mates then him producing for himself. Gholston might of been a workout warrior in the weight room had all athleticism in the world but didn't comprehend his craft. He couldn't understand how to bend and move, or initial punch he was lacking that was as a 4-3 DE, how do you expect if he does not know his own trade craft from college how is he going to translate to a new position in the pros?

I agree with this. But if it were only a matter of not being able to convert to 3-4, he could've been moved to a team that plays a 4-3 and been ok.

could of but a player that does not understand his craft, had no real arsenal of pass rush moves only using his athleticism to win against tackles either around the edge or stepping inside when a tackle went too wide is not talent it is production of circumstance his team mate forced him to be rewarded. 37 tackles with 15.5 TFLs and 14 sacks but had 9 QB pressures?

We're really not in disagreement here.

I know just stating facts, for others that are reading this. Just pissed that a blindsided former GM is trying to cash in on his former what glory, he failed then and now is failing to see the bigger picture. Sacks are not the only stat that matters and to a Lovie Smith, to a Robert Saleh that versatility coming in with a foundation that coaches try to teach to these players after they are drafted already have "it".

Poor Tanny... he got rooked into taking Gholston because he heard Belli-Fuck wanted him.

still to this day he blames Gholston rather not taking credit for his poor decision. he made a few more over the years never drafted to build from the ground up though always looked to hit a home run rather than for the future.

isn't it funny that the fan base doesn't roast Gholston? it's really a credit to him as a person.
it wasn't his fault he had monster #'s at OSU.
it wasn't his fault he tested off the charts at the combine and pro-days.
it wasn't his fault he interviewed well, and carried himself like a gentleman.

the kid always did the best he could. and then got rewarded for it.
how do you hate a guy who tried as hard as he could?

but to use him as a scape goat for your failures at your job when you failed not one but two organizations. then compare a player in this draft to your failed evaluation of a player you drafted and they could be farther a part then he is claiming.

no one is asking the right questions, what was job or assignment at Georgia. well from what I learned his responsibility as DT or DE he did flawlessly, when asked to set the edge he did. when he was spy on the QB he stayed in the bubble, when he was asked to pressure the pocket and force the QB to move off his spot he did for a whopping 36 times this year. when he was asked to hit the gaps to force the runs outside he did. this kid has the upside but has the foundation, what the fuck is wrong with this so called experts knocking or trying to knock down the value of a prospect just because you would never take him, these coaches and actual talent evaluator see things different.

you don't have to sell me. i love Travon.

Tanny just seems like a moron for doing that to Gholston. he should be saying the things i said about him to give his own horrible assessment a reason for picking him.

Tannenbaum isn't the only idiot talking himself out of a potentially great player:

The reasons he gives are ludicrous. They're more like why they should:
- Give the qb more time
- Open up the running game
- one great lineman doesn't make the entire line great? WTF?

Mike Tannenbaum is an ass clown - guy couldn't draft.......Mangini told him who to pick. He was a contract guy thrust into the job and ill prepared to judge talent/talent evaluators. Once Mangini left it was him and Rex.......blind leading blind in terms of identifying long term franchise assets coming out of college.

As for Gholston - the fanbase was well aware of the risk and many didn't want him.......pointing out that, if memory serves right still, Gholston got his sacks in about 3-4 games vs bitch ass opponents. Guy was wearing red flags all the way to the podium.

In short, Tannenbaum was a FRAUD.

the red flags were even brighter red when drafted by a 3-4 coach who preached "read and react".
