The timing was bad, but...

We're in much better shape than anyone thought possible at this point. Yes, it would have been better if the GM change had been made prior to free agency and the draft. I'm pretty sure that we'd have a better cornerback situation and probably a better center. However, I have to give Chris Johnson credit. At least he finally did what he had to do. I think that we all agree that our present GM/Coach situation is exponentially better than it was last year at this time. Better late than never. One last point about Mac: He was not a particularly good drafter, but he was an excellent trader. He also did a good job with undrafted free agents. I still don't like the organizational structure, but we have some top notch people in the organization now.

My post from a different thread: Maybe the timing was exactly right, as we seem to have access to a very good pool of FO candidates. Either that or JDouglas is a guy who qualified people want to work with. Regardless, it all seemed to work in the end. Lots of good momentum going into training camp and a lot be excited about as a long time fan.

I would hope that they checked Joe Douglas' availability and that helped the timing, but as has been said several times, it's not really a unique time to let go of your personnel staff - many teams have let them finish the draft they prepared for. They did get lucky in one instance - the collapse of the AAF was good timing re: Phil Savage.

If they do this after next season, the Jets are one of a group of teams with GM openings. Douglas would have been a hot candidate for most of them, and the Jets might not have landed him.

By doing it when they did, the Jets did not have that competition - at least not until the Texans did the same thing the Jets did (and faced much less scrutiny for it).
