The Walking Dead "Forget" Episode Discussion (SPOILERS!)

SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched tonight's episode of The Walking Dead, don't read any further!

"Forget" seemed like a two-part episode with the previous episode, which was entitled "Remember." Both these episodes played off each other but cleverly I might add did quite the opposite. Last week's episode, "Remember" focus was on having the survivors who just joined the Alexandria community was to remember their former selves pre-apocalypse, which was solidified by Rick shaving and once again becoming a cop by donning on the uniform. This week however, it seemed that the focus shifted in two ways: 1. Most of the survivors are trying to forget who they were "out there" so that they can try to fit in and accept their new lives in Alexandria or 2. The other survivors including Rick are trying to forget what it meant to be good as they are plotting to take over the community from Deanna and co…

Which brings me to this questions: Is Rick going evil or is he just being practical? I ask this because he keeps saying "you need to watch out for dangerous people" but the irony is that HE and his companions are the dangerous people she should look out for. However, Rick's growing attachment to Jesse and seeing Carl finally be happy with peers of his own age might be causing him to waver in his quest to take Alexandria. Although there was a glimmer of the governor-esque Rick at the end of the episode as he reached for his gun when he saw Jesse and her husband. Maybe he'll take the town and Jesse? Watch out Mr. Anderson…

I absolutely loved how the episode approached the concept of assimilation in different ways. First, Daryl who I would think would be the last one to accept life in Alexandria bonded with Aaron who told him he should be a recruiter because he knows that Daryl has the ability to still tell the difference between "good and evil," which is interesting since he refused to take the gun from Rick towards the end of the episode. Does he see something in Rick that the others do not? Then, Sasha, who to no fault of her own is having trouble assimilating. I mean girl lost both her boyfriend and brother in like a week. I think she's the dark horse based on how she react at the party. Girl's about to loose her shit…

Best part of the episode however? CAROL. She continues to prove how badass she is and how committed she is in making sure her people are safe. She went as far as threatening Jesse's son that she'll tie him to a tree outside the town's walls if he narcs on her for stealing the guns. I kept screaming at the screen saying, "dude, just take the cookies" LOL because we all know that Carol will kill a kid or two if need be. It wouldn't be the first time…

Saddest part of the episode? The walkers killing the horse. Why do they keep killing them? R.I.P. Buttons.

Keep Walking, Keep Talking! Walker 2

What are your thoughts on "Forget?"

P.S. Only 3 episodes left till the Finale! WTF!? We need more episodes!

"the distance" & "remember" immediately became all time favorites for me.. hell, "remember" might have passed "nebraska" as my favorite episode ever..

"forget" was pretty average in comparison.. although i did find daryl's & aaron's interaction believable & unforced.. rick kissing jessie for all to see, was not.. neither was carol being successfully followed by a little kid.. really?? the stakes are way to high for both of them to be that sloppy.. obviously..

yeah, i definitely didn't love "forget.."

BTW, i'm really surprised how much liberty the writer's are taking with rick & especially carol..

threatening (in great detail) a child's life?? & yes, i get the "what other choice did she have at that point" argument.. she had none because she was painted into a corner by horrible writing.. who wants their "hero's" saying vile, disturbing, evil things to little kids?? what demographic were the writer's trying to appeal to in "forget??" very slippery slope writing beloved "hero" characters being complete dicks!!

do i believe this will last?? no.. AMC doesn't have the balls to continue alienating its fans with money being made hand over fist..

*sigh* but what's done is done.. the die has been cast, especially for carol..

the tormentor & executioner of children..

yuck.

these are two different types of survivor groups and they are colliding. Rick's group has lived on the edge constantly since the fall and Alexandria has had it comparatively easy. So you have a pack of lions trying to learn to live among the gazelles. Yes, Carol on the one hand had me chuckling because she is definitely the hardest of the hard but also hand me cringing at the same time. Sasha seems like the one with the biggest turnaround. She really wants to believe in Alexandria and that has me worried for what will come. Rick has a hard dark side but he's not any different now than he ways before he came in. Before and right after the fall, yes but he was already pretty sinister when he walked into Alexandria. You just see it now more that it is contrasted against the gazelles.

I agree that "Forget" was at times hard to watch because the characters are being portrayed in a more villainous manner and I think how we are feeling -- disgust, upset, shock, etc. is what the writers want us to feel and I think AMC is on board with that. I think they feel confident in the writers but at the same time this definitely will not last a long time. They are still risking alienating their viewers because a show stays watchable if people like the people they are watching. I mean they've invested so much time in believing in them but the post-apolcaypse has a funny way of changing you.

I suspect that this downward spiral into darkness will only last up until the finale where the characters will inevitably learn that turning dark won't help their cause. I'm sure they'll be more deaths because of the choices Rick and Co will make in trying to take Alexandria and then they'll do something heroic to make them realize the error of their way.

"Forget" wasn't the best episode, but it was interesting in terms of shifting character dynamics and it gave us more insight into the inner workings of Alexandria.

I'm sure it will pick up again. It's their MO on The Walking Dead.

I like this analogy. Although, I would have to disagree with you on Rick always being this sinister. Prior to the group's arrival to Alexandria, Rick was the most adamant about not joining another community and with good reason after the events of Woodbury and Terminus. Once the group pulled up to the gates and he heard the sound of children, he started to realize that maybe this place was different and his beliefs were solidified after they began to assimilate. What worries Rick is that these people aren't prepared because they are the "gazelles" in the post-apocalypse, whereas his group "the lions" only became that way after several horrific confrontations with outsiders. His sinister perspective comes from wanting to protect this new safe haven, a home for his people, by any means necessary. He's been corrupted the same way everyone else in this world has.

Also, there's part of me that doesn't fully believe that these Alexandrians are as innocent or weak as they are letting on.

Did you guys notice the st sign RICK passes in the last scene...., Morgan St.
What's up with that kiss?
And then next day she's all like....hi RICK with her hubby
Daryl was way to comfortable in the " gay " house. Not there's anything wrong with that.
Carols bedtime story to that kid ....very creepy
Deanna bugs me
They got you thinking Ricks crazy and losing it but I bet he's the only one keeping it together
He does look like he wants that " piece" Go RICK
Where the heck is Tara and Gabriel ?

Interesting observation with the Morgan St. I didn't notice that and I'm sure that it was not unintentional by the writers to include that.

Perhaps, Morgan will be the one to stop Rick from going down the path he is on? At the start of the series Rick was the the guy with all the morals and now he's teetering on the edge of darkness. Similarly, Morgan was also still playing by some type ethnical rules and then he became unhinged after the loss of his son, but now he's back. Rick will be redeemed...
