SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched tonight's episode of The Walking Dead, don't read any further!
What did you think of the penultimate episode of the season? Walker 2
"Try" for me represented how damaging the post-apocalyptic world can be on the human psyche. The negative psychological effects are clearly evident throughout the entirety of the episode within the characters of Sasha and Rick. Each of those characters have specific reasons why they are becoming "unhinged" from sanity and in the process sacrificing their ethics and morality.
Sasha's trifecta loss in Bob, Tyreese, and Noah solidified her descent into unrelenting madness. Each of those deaths represented a loss in humanity within Sasha. In Bob, she lost love, in Tyreese, she lost family, and in Noah she lost friendship. When all of those things are stripped away from you, one is bound to break.
Rick is a whole other story. His break with sanity is a direct result of his repeated failed attempts to keep his group of survivors alive whether that was at the Atlanta camp, the Hershel farm, or the Prison. This was his last chance to provide any semblance of normality for everyone that he has sworn to protect. I don't think that this is Rick becoming the new governor and I don't think its him being villainous either. This is Rick trying to balance the new rules of the post-apocalypse with the old laws of the pre-apocalypse. And that last scene shows this juxtaposition.
Both Rick and Michonne represent those opposing viewpoints. Rick in his bloodied sheriff outfit represents his descent into madness and his assimilation of the new rules whereas Michonne in the clean sheriff outfit shows her refusal to sacrifice her morals and resilience to hold onto the old laws. This in my opinion is why it had to be Michonne to stop Rick in that last emotionally powerful scene.
Speaking of that last scene, I've never seen Rick get his ass whopped like that since well the governor. It was also interesting to see how far Rick had fallen from Season one. Both he and Pete hit someone they loved. Pete hit Jesse and Rick hit Carl. Which of the those two characters is more righteous? And in those moments, its hard as a viewer to believe Rick when he gives his speech to Deanna. Is he right? Are these Alexandrians doomed? Or is Rick just grasping at straws and dooming his group? It's hard to tell at this point, which is why I love the Walking Dead. Always keeps its viewers on our toes.
Finally, the 90-minute season finale airs next Sunday and I think both Rick's group and the Alexandrians need to start worrying about those mysterious walkers with the Ws on carved on their foreheads because if the writers are bringing in the character I think they are then the shit's about to hit the fan for everyone involved.
All this and Carl's about to get it in.
