It turns out the NFL, sports' modern-day television ratings king, is not unbeatable.
During the fall, the super popular AMC drama The Walking Dead scored higher ratings in the all-important 18-to-49-year-old demographic in five out of eight weeks while going against NBC's Sunday Night Football.
Even though the NFL's Sunday night contests haven't all been thrillers, this is a remarkable accomplishment for AMC.
Sports Illustrated media writer Richard Deitsch put the show's feat into perspective in his column this week:
"It’s a remarkable television feat given that the NFL simply does not get out-rated on Sundays, and it makes you wonder if other networks can glean something from AMC, short of creating a show about a zombie apocalypse."
Additionally, The Walking Dead will end ESPN's 27-year run of having the most watched cable series, a streak that started when it carried Sunday Night Football and then shifted to Monday Night Football in 2006.
AMC president Charlie Collier told Deitsch that his network's feat is attributable to a year-round marketing effort, which includes the show's strong presence at conventions like Comic Con and constant social media postings. Just like how the NFL uses the Combine and the Draft to stoke offseason interest, AMC knows it must keep pushing its product throughout the year.
"We don’t per se look at The Walking Dead in comparison to the NFL," Collier told Deitsch. "What we are really trying to do is create a fan experience and an event each week that moves and engages every viewer. For fans of The Walking Dead, the show is like their favorite team playing a home game on national TV every week."
AMC cleverly split the fifth season of "The Walking Dead" into two parts. The first half ended a few weeks ago and the second half picks up in February. There's a reason for the timing; while the show can compete with the NFL during the regular season, the playoffs are another beast. So the show proved its muscle this fall and will likely score enormous ratings in the winter when it isn't competing with football.
It should be noted, furthermore, that if time-shifted viewing (people who watch the program on DVR) is included in the ratings, "The Walking Dead" would have beaten the NFL each week

bump!!i would recommend the walking dead to anyone who has netflix..
hell, i would recommend getting a netflix 1 month free trial just to be able to watch the 1st 4 seasons..
the timing is perfect to catch up now because the 2nd half of season 5 doesn't air until sometime in february..
be warned, this thread already has lots of spoilers.. so if you're interested in giving the show a shot you might want to do some bindge viewing before reading this thread..
bump!!
i hope some of you guys are gonna give/given the walking dead a shot.. you know like elias said he would..
me, TeachDown, flgreen & Elias have made the only posts in a thread that has almost 500 views??
come on guys lets talk the walk..
LOLz preach teach!!jetgreen13 is right! Where are you Walking Dead fans? The second half of season five premieres in February. There are only 59 episodes. You can't binge watch now. Make this your New Year's resolution.
Side note - I've done some extensive reading into the spinoff show tentatively titled 'Cobalt' and the more I learn the less I want it to come to fruition. What's the point of another show following a different group of people? It would have been more interesting if it was a prequel type series that shows the events that led up to the apocalypse. I think AMC might be jumping the shark on this one…
LOLz clever..Thought this thread was about Idzik and Rex. Nevermind.
I think that's when the show is at it's best..jetgreen13Did you see this? AMC just released the trailer for the second half of The Walking Dead. February 8th can't come soon enough!
The theme for the second half seems to be about "sticking together." What do you think about this?
You’ll remember that the original pilot of The Walking Dead has our hero, Rick Grimes, waking up from a coma. In the time he was out, zombies have taken over the world and he has to figure out where he is, what went wrong, and how to find his family. But what happened in all the time Rick was comatose? That’s the time period that will allegedly be covered in the spin-off. In other words, we’re about to jump back in time to see how the world handled the zombie crisis while Rick was sleeping.
thanks for the info.. i remember you weren't exactly thrilled with the idea of a spinoff, but i gotta say the premise works for me..Spinoff Update
Apparently, The Walking Dead spinoff, tentatively titled Cobalt will focus on how the zombie outbreak began and will deal with humanity's efforts to stop it from spreading. In other words, what happened all that time that Rick was comatose.

if the walking dead "prequel" is wildly successful who's to say it doesn't ends up continuing into the walking dead present timeline?? & if that were to happen both shows could possibly become intertwined on some level??
OK, i'm officially optimistic about the spinoff.. how about you teach?? are you getting pumped up about...
i'm interested that's for sure.. the prequel angle definitely seems to make sense & with good writing it could be really entertaining..I was a bit weary at first because AMC wasn't revealing any information about "Cobalt" and initial reports were that it was going to be a "companion" show that follows a different group of people in the present timeline of the post-zombie apocalypse (which I think would have been overkill since thats what the original is all about).
I think it was smart to instead make it a prequel series about how people initially reacted to the zombie outbreak because that's the one aspect of the show that I think most people want to know about and is really never addressed on "The Walking Dead" (not even in flashbacks), which I think is in large part due to the fact that the comic steers away from that.
I don't think it will be as popular though; spinoffs usually aren't as good, but I will definitely give it a shot. Plus, its going to be hard to top some of the characters we already have.
What do you think?

i try to stay in the loop (just enough not to run into spoilers) on youtube.. i'm subscribed to a couple of really good walking dead channels.. how about you??
trevchan2 his channel is pretty much completely dedicated to the walking dead all year round.. he covers both the TV series as well as the comics..Ugh, I can't wait for the new episodes to start! Only two more weeks! I hope we've convinced enough people to watch it and there's still enough time to binge watch.
I'm not currently subscribed to any walking dead channels, but I'd love to be. What do you suggest?
