im trying to be optimistic.

Thats fine and he might be innocent, but I'm not buying for one second that he is not a suspect.

I had this same argument with people about Hernandez in the initial stages of that investigation. I insisted he was a suspect, and people kept telling me he wasn't, because the cops specifically said he wasn't. I told them I don't care what the cops are saying to the media, this guy is a suspect.

Super, here's something a lawyer friend of mine just reminded me in another forum ...

Direct quote I heard on the radio on June 15, 1994...I will never forget it:

"In Los Angeles, the former wife of football great OJ Simpson, Nicole Brown Simpson, was found murdered at her Santa Monica home along with another unidentified victim. Police are saying Mr. Simpson is not a suspect in the crime."

2 days later we watched a white Bronco chase and then had the trial of trial of the century when he got away with a murder he was clearly involved in.

LSU offensive lineman La'el Collins is voluntarily leaving Chicago and the NFL draft to return to Louisiana to meet with police, who want to talk to him about the shooting death of a pregnant woman in Baton Rouge, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Police said Tuesday that Collins is not believed to be a suspect in last week's death of Brittney Mills, but they want to talk to Collins to see if he can provide them with information.

A source told Schefter that Collins is leaving the draft in an effort to clear his name.

Mills, 29, was found shot to death in her apartment Friday night. She was rushed to the hospital, where her infant was delivered.

Police believe Mills is the former girlfriend of Collins and are trying to determine who killed her, and whether Collins is the father of the child delivered after Mills' death.

Collins' attorney, Jim Boren, said Tuesday he is taking the police investigation seriously, has provided information to the police and has hired a private investigator.

"We have identified where La'el was the day the lady was murdered to establish he was nowhere around," Boren told ESPN. "We have offered to give names, witnesses who can vouch for his whereabouts that day until after the woman's body was discovered. We believe that when [police] have verified that information, that they will rule him out as a suspect in the homicide, just as I believe he should be."

Collins was one of 27 prospects scheduled to attend Thursday's first round of the draft.

This doesn't look good for Collins. I would think if this was just "help with leads" and "verifying he's the father" it could be handled from Chicago. The police want him back in Louisiana and they want to talk to him in person.

By no means am I saying he's guilty, I want that to be clear. The Duke lacrosse case, Jameis Rape case, UVA rape case, etc, etc, has taught us to withhold judgement.

But right now there is a little smoke with Collins and this murder. I really, really hope for his sake, and his child's, that he had nothing to do with it.

Terrible timing, Collins was one of the top LT's in this draft. He he fell to 37, I'd have to pull the trigger (bad phrase here), on him.

Police, being such models of propriety, ALWAYS tell a person halfway across the country whether or not they are a "suspect" in a murder investigation.
They would NEVER lie to someone who was not a suspect.

The Bah-tun-Rooj P.D. has 2 things on it's mind right now.
1.) Getting a DNA swab from La'el Collins, which they cannot do by remote control.
2.) Pinning this murder on him - because it's ALWAYS the hubby/boyfriend in these cases - using the DNA as motive for their version of the crime.

They just don't want to have to chase him to hell & gone or spend the resources to wrangle with a top-flight defense team, after he gets that big fat megamillion check for being a top 10 pick in the NFL lottery.
So naturally, he's "not a suspect".

He is, however, being royally screwed out of his rightful earnings as an NFL player picked in Rd 1, by what can only be perceived as a lazy police force in the backwaters of the redneck south.
There was absolutely no reason they couldn't have waited another week to make this public, AFTER the NFL draft - except that they wanted to deprive him of those resources.
COMPLETE disregard for his rights and future life, if they in fact believe he is an innocent person.

Man, there HAS to be a whopper of a lawsuit in there somewhere, if he is not drafted high.
That alone is enough reason to give some unscrupulous DA reason to try and pin this murder on him.

I guess his position is that he does not know whether he will be able to report for work after the draft? whether the police will allow him to leave the jurisdiction while he is helping them with their inquiries.

If he's innocent, that helps him get a nice contract

If he is guilty, doesnt matter much.

Ian Rappaport said its unlikely the NFL will grant his request, because the NFL is scared to death at creating a precedent where if players get in trouble leading up to the draft, they can ask to be made ineligible based on the league doing it for Collins, so they can reenter the sup draft, and the league might be libel if they deny someone else. They do not want to open that can of worms, thats why they are not granting this request. It sucks for Collins, but I understand the leagues concern, they have to protect the draft and the process, they can't throw a stick of dynamite into the process just to accommodate one guy, and because Collins is not yet in the league, the NFLPA can't defend him.

I cant disagree with the NFL decision, but if the guy is innocent this is a darn shame.

Hard to do it on draft day, but I bet there is a way to work out some reasonable rules to allow a player to bounce out of the draft after certain specified events beyond the current rules.
