I can relate to that. When I was in the Air Force I wanted a Curtis Martin Jersey. I could only find one that was a 2X. I was barley a Large. After 24 years of service. It still was tooo big. Now after a few years of retirement. It finely fits. If they ever called me back to service. I doubt if I ever could fit in the cockpit.
My boys have a chuckle every time I wear my Jets jerseys. I had an Abraham and a couple Pennington jerseys. On the Job I get it from my co-workers daily about being a Jet fan. Jet colors run deep in this old man and his older kin, but not with my traitorous sons .
Way back when, I bought a game jersey with my name on it and a number special to me.
When people asked who it was , I said it’s me, I’ll never get traded, won’t leave as a free agent or be a bust draft pick.

I haven't worn Jets gear in a decade. I have a Curtis Martin jersey signed by Joe Klecko. I wouldn't want to ruin it.
Tonight I am wearing my guardians hat
