Unhearlded New York Jets to Watch in Training Camp

In the 2nd part of our series looking at Jets players currently flying under the radar that we should keep an eye on in training camp, we take a look at Quincy Enunwa, Brent Qvale, and Dexter McDougle. It's Paul Malamood @therealmoody82 talking Jets football. (photo credit: ganggreennation.com)

Last week I took a look at three New York Jets players currently flying under the radar that Jets’ fans should keep an eye on in training camp. First was Rontez Miles who for two years has battled to make it off the practice squad and onto the active roster. Then there was Shaq Evans who will look to dispel the absurd notion that he is a bust after he lost his rookie season to a very early injury in training camp last season. Lastly we took a look at an undrafted rookie that will be trying to prove that he was over looked in the draft and find a way onto the roster in Taiwan Jones.

All three of those players are athletes who very few people are talking about, but all of them have a chance to make a legitimate impact for the 2015 Jets. Here is a look at three more unheralded players that will be trying to carve out a roster spot for themselves when training camp starts next week.

Quincy Enunwa, WR:

Much like with Shaq Evans, Quincy Enunwa is a receiver who was drafted in 2014 and is getting unfairly written off by fans because he was a member of the fated 10-man draft class by former GM John Idzik. Enunwa spent almost the entire season on the practice squad before being activated for the final game in Miami. Drafted in the 6th round out of Nebraska, he is a player that was overlooked on draft day after being completely under utilized in the Cornhusker offense.

Enunwa has prototypical size, a very high football IQ, and possesses excellent intangibles. Last year he played very well in training camp and I thought he deserved to make the team out right, especially considering how little talent the Jets had at receiver. Looking at how many WR’s got playing time throughout the 2014 season, it is shocking that he didn’t get a legitimate shot.

Unfortunately for Enunwa this year the Jets are far more talented at receiver then they were last year. Look for him to make a big push for one of the two receiver spots on the roster that is up for grabs. I also wouldn’t be surprised if he forces them to keep a 7th receiver. The presence of Brandon Marshal on Gang Green should do wonders for his growth as a player, and I believe that down the road he could turn out to be the eventual replacement for Marshall. If the Jets don’t find a roster spot for him this year, there is a chance that a more receiver needy team will steal him before he passes through waivers.

Brent Qvale, G:

College teammates with Enunwa at Nebraska, Brent Qvale also spent 2014 on the practice squad after going undrafted. Qvale is a player that has been met with little fan fare until the Jets mini camp in June, where he was one of the biggest surprises on the whole team. Granted it is near impossible to actually evaluate linemen until the pads come on. Regardless, with his performance this spring he has thrown his name right in the ring for the competition at right guard.

A tackle in college, he stands 6’7” tall weighing in at 315 pounds. The Jets however are all set at tackle for the time being, so they are hoping that he will be able to slide inside. While he is a long shot to win the starting job, he definitely has a puncher’s chance. If he were to win the job, it would go along way to helping the offensive line establish a dominant presence in the running game. Even if he doesn’t get the starting job there should be a place for him on the team. The fact that he has experience at tackle and the size to play it would make him a very valuable back up, because in the result of an injury they could slide him back out to tackle until the Jets brass figures out anther plan of action.

Dexter McDougle, CB:

Dexter McDougle or “Coach” as he was called during his senior year at Maryland is going to be a very intriguing player to watch this training camp. Coming out of college there were two schools of thought on him. The first is that when he played he looked like one of the best corner’s in college football. The second opinion on him was that 'when' was the key word of that sentence because he missed so much time to injury. The one thing that everyone could agree on was that he has incredible intangibles.

McDougle was the player drafted to sure up the Jets 2014 cornerback issues alongside Dee Millner. Unfortunately he again got injured in training camp and ended up missing the entire season. After the Jets CB play went as expected, the Jets went out and spent a major amount of money to bring back Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie, as well as newcomer Buster Skrine to play nickel back.

All of a sudden McDougle is now an afterthought on the Jets cornerback depth chart, coming in as the 5th corner on the roster. However new head coach Todd Bowles loves to use lots of defensive backs, so there should be plenty of instances that the Jets have 4 CB’s on the field at once. Dee Millner is currently the Jets 4th corner, but there is a very good chance that he will have to start the season on the PUP list. If that happens and he can stay healthy, then Jets fans will likely be seeing lots of McDougle in 2015.

Qvale really is an interesting guy.

Perfect T's build. He must have caught someones eye early in OTA's because he sure got a lot of reps at guard in both the OTA's and mini camp. Very tall, and a bit slim for a guard, but I have to assume the CS wants to see if he can back up both G, and RT. That would be the key for him to make the final roster.

If he should win the RG spot out right (think it's unlikely) would be a major boost for the Jets OL going forward

I'm interested in seeing what Dex McDougle can do. After all, we've seen NOTHING so far.
