crossing routes albeit seem like a good game plan for Sam he doesn't step into those throws even though the receiver is wide open... Sam has to be taught to utilize these receivers as his first read, not last... Guarantee the wrong person is being called the hot read guy in these sets, usually they are double covered, like Braxton Berrios was last game but Jeff Smith was wide open over the middle... This is a coaching error, and predetermined play in Adam Gases's game day script...
practicing the script for game day is fine but if that is all Gase does then how will Sam develop if his mechanics, footwork and composure is not being corrected in practice then during game day he looks the way he looks and fans are disgusted in his overall body of work...
I actually agree with everything except your last line and your point about Diggs.
Last season, even if he would have had diggs, Allen was wildly inaccurate deep. He would have had the same issues. He worked hard on his mechanics and is greatly improved. Remember Darnold was working with him and the very same QB coach, yet Darnold came out and said he would not be changing his mechanics or footwork because he was comfortable throwing that way.
Practice time is so limited in season that it's not possible to alter a starting QBs footwork . Teams are lucky to add a play or two in a practice week.
A QB needs thousands of reps to alter their mechanics. Its muscle memory. That is something Darnold has to commit to in the off season, unless he is yanked for the remainder of the season and is given a QB coach to work on nothing else but fundamentals theres no other way. If he gets his mechanics right, his accuracy will greatly improve and his composure will come with increased confidence in his passing.
While Darnold is at his best on broken plays, he's also at his worst on those same plays. The shotput picks, flipping the ball into double and triple coverage have also come on those plays.
At times hes simply trying too hard to make something happen. That's a result of Gases shit offense for sure
