Breer adds that Bates comes highly recommended by Jon Gruden and Mike Shanahan, and worked with new Jets OC John Morton at USC.

Bates, 40, began his NFL coaching career back in 2002 with the Buccaneers as their offensive quality control coach. He was later promoted to assistant QBs coach before departing to become the Broncos offensive assistant back in 2006.

Bates eventually worked his way up to QBs coach with the Broncos. He had a brief stint at USC and was later hired as the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator but unfortunately only held the job for one season.

Bates most recent coaching job was with the Bears back in 2012 as their QBs coach.

Now that we have our OC, QB coach and Ass't QB coaches all in the fold, how soon can they start meeting and working with the young QBs? I went to NFLPA website to see what was allowed, and unless I'm missing something no on-field workouts can commence with an existing coaching staff until 3rd week of April. It goes on to define what is allowed and for how long in phase 1, 2 and 3 workouts, but nowhere does it say that coaches can't meet with players to discuss technique, film study, etc. Anyone know specifically what a team can and cannot do with players between now and April?

strength and conditioning -- getting or designing the proper regimen for the quarterbacks to be ready for OTAs...

designing the playbook, and giving it to the quarterbacks to start recognizing and learning...

as for any coaching, they can not do anything practicing or technique improvements until OTAs...

they can give advice on things to do outside Florham Park but it is on the player who is willing to commit to those activities to improve their skill set...
