Update: Jets sign Center/Guard Travis Swanson

The Jets announced center Travis Swanson visited Friday.

Swanson, 27, played his first four seasons in Detroit after they made him a third-round pick. He played 11 games last season before going on injured reserve with what the Lions said was a concussion.

However, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press has reported that Swanson’s representatives have a medical report that shows he had a reaction to medicine used to treat a concussion. His symptoms subsided after he got off the medicine.

Swanson also missed time at the end of 2016 with a head injury.

In four seasons, Swanson played 53 games with 42 starts.

Swanson is an upgrade over Johnson and he would just be a depth player, 3rd string center. Basically swapping camp bodies, potential depth if he is signed.

Given Long's history we definitely need another center besides Jonotthan Harrison on the roster. I'm hoping Mac selects a C/G in rounds 3 or 4 as well. And keep in mind, Long can always move over to guard so this provides good depth.

At least it would add depth to a spot in the "O" line that thankfully the front office realizes was a week spot last season. I don't remember how well he played.

Ian Rapaport reporting that this deal is in the works. Unknown contract details. I’m a little skeptical about the Lions wanting Wesley Johnson over their incumbent starter. Why would you sign WJ unless Swanson is garbage? I mean, we had a first hand look at WJ and it wasn’t pretty last year.

I’m guessing Swanson’s a depth signing in case Long gets hurt.

if swanson had multiple head injury issues, it is possible that when healthy he is good, but he is risky - which is the sort of player we may need to take a chance with

He's a good center I think, at least better than Johnson. He just needs to wear a special helmet. He went out with a concussion two seasons in a row. As a back-up, which is likely why he was signed, it is a good signing I think.

if he has had one or more concussions, likely increased risk of another - special helmet or not - but if he can play hope for the best!
