I have a feeling that this whole story is Shefter trying to cover his ass. He jumped the shark, reported Wilcox had signed with the 49s, trying to"be first". Now he has a visit with the Jets and Shefter is trying to cover his ass.
The Jets have signed veteran free agent safety J.J. Wilcox and have waived linebacker Freddie Bishop.
Wilcox (6'0", 212) was drafted in the third round (80th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft by Dallas out of Georgia Southern. He played with the Cowboys for four seasons, went to the Buccaneers as an unrestricted free agent in March 2017, was traded to the Steelers at the start of the '17 season and played last year in Pittsburgh. The Steelers released him in April.
For his pro career, Wilcox has played in 70 games (39 starts) with 208 tackles, six interceptions, 16 pass defenses, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.
Bishop this year had entered his third season with the Jets. A Western Michigan product, he first signed with the Jets in February 2016 after two seasons with the CFL's Calgary Stampeders. He has appeared in nine games (three starts) after beginning the past two seasons on the Jets practice squad, recording 31 tackles, a fumble recovery and a PD.

doesn't mean Bishop is gone, just means they needed an immediate roster spot for Wilcox... When Miles is placed on IR, it could open up a spot for return of Bishop or someone else...
This is true also. I would prefer the someone else. It isn't that Bishop didn't put in the effort, he just wasn't that good.
