Former Rams director of college scouting Brad Holmes has said farewell, but not good bye.

Holmes, now the General Manager of the Lions, reportedly is talking to his old boss, Rams G.M. Les Snead, regarding possible trade scenarios involving Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. That’s the report from Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com.

But it’s one thing to talk about it, and it’s quite another to do it. It will not be easy to do it.

Omitted from the article, for example, is the fact that the Rams don’t own a 2021 first-round draft pick, thanks to the trade that brought cornerback Jalen Ramsey from Jacksonville in 2019. The article also doesn’t delve into the nuts and bolts of Rams quarterback Jared Goff’s contract, which carries more than $43 million in fully-guaranteed payments in 2021 and 2022.

It will be very difficult to find a trade partner for Goff, who has a cap number of $34.625 million in 2021. With the salary cap expected to be in the range of $180 million — and with Stafford making $20 million in 2021 (he could want more than that as part of a trade) — the Rams would have a hard time putting a team around a pair of quarterbacks who consume more than $50 million in cap space.

Even if Goff is traded, the Rams would absorb $22.2 million in cap charges.

With the Rams not having a first-round pick and Goff’s contract creating a cap problem for the Rams, the idea of a trade for Stafford seems far-fetched. The better explanation could be that Snead is simply doing Holmes a favor by trying to goose the market for Stafford. Snead and the Rams would benefit by reinforcing yet again the message that Goff’s job is far from safe, possibly as a last-ditch effort to get him pointed in the right direction.

Rams got fucked on this deal. 2 first round picks for a guy who has never won anything . Hell Goff has a better playoff record than Stafford

To me, this trade is more about Goff’s ugly contract. The Rans paid all those picks because they obviously like Stafford but also because of Goff’s expensive price tag.

I really like the trade for the Lions.

The Lions got a haul for Stafford. Too bad most of his stats came in garbage time. Stafford can throw it but has never been able to carry a team. Stafford on the Rams? Probably going to work out because of that D. As long as they don't count on Stafford to carry that team they should be okay.

As for the Lions? Not really sure where they are going with this but it's the Lions. Anything can happen. They are the Murphys Law of football teams.

With this trade the Jets do have a bit of a problem here. The Texans are probably gonna ask for even more than we thought now that the Rams have set the bar. Two 1st, Goff and a 3rd for Stafford who’s about 7 years older than Goff is ridiculous. The Jets only hope is for Watson to only want to get traded to the Jets and nobody else. Then maybe the Jets can come out with a reasonable trade haul.

Done deal and it makes much more sense

Goff and 3 threes rather than the 1st round picks

Lions still got the better of the deal though

2021 third-round pick, and 2022 and 2023 first-round picks

they have the defense, they thought they had a competent QB but realized too late that he was a shit show but traded to get out of the dogshit and upgrade to a veteran who has maybe 3 to 5 good years left by then they might actually be able to use their own first round draft picks in the draft rather than trading them away....

I am amazed at what they gave up for Stafford. can he beat brady, that's what it comes down to cause brady is going to be here a long time and all the best free agents will want to play with him so tompa will be a solid team for a long time. Goff already beat brady this year, can Stafford against that defense?. nuts to me

Goff's contract 4 years $140 M ($110 M gtd) is why they gave up so much to move him to Detroit

This makes sense for the Rams. They are a win now team, a good team that has been held back by their QB. Stafford is pretty much at his peak so it's a very nice match. Goff can be effective if everything goes right but grab the lead and knock them out of their game plan, putting the game on Goff's shoulders, and he chokes like a gagging goldfish. Stafford at least has a reputation as a guy that can lead a game winning drive.
