Update: Ryan Fitzpatrick has MCL sprain

New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will undergo an MRI on his left knee after sustaining an injury that temporarily forced him out of Sunday's 27-23 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Fitzpatrick left the game in the third quarter after Dolphins defensive tackle Jordan Phillips rolled into his left leg. Before the next snap, he took a knee and left the game for the remainder of the drive.

Bryce Petty came in and went 2-for-2 with 19 yards, leading the Jets to a field goal, before Fitzpatrick returned to the game.

"[The doctors] evaluated and made the call, giving me all the options, and then we go from there," Fitzpatrick said, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

Fitzpatrick wore an ice pack around his left knee during his postgame press conference, and head coach Todd Bowles said Fitzpatrick would remain the team's starting quarterback if he stays healthy.

Fitzpatrick threw for 193 yards on 17-of-28 passing with one touchdown and two interceptions. This season, Fitzpatrick has thrown for 1,982 yards with eight touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

I said this earlier and it may have come off the wrong way. When I said it he had just been injured and then he came right back in so I said all I had was to root for him to get injured. Of course I don't want it to be something major, but I do hope he goes on IR. I don't want to watch this guy throw another pass. He has ruined two seasons for the Jets.

OK I have no problem saying it - aside from an ACL - a sprained knee, cartilage, tendon. He'll heal just fine and collect his 12 Million. We need to see Petty. I admire his toughness but Fitz should never throw another pass as a Jet. He misses way too many open men.

Us old guys can't wait much longer. A QB can change the entire mojo of the team - see Oakland and Dallas. Bowles won't do it unless he's ordered to do so. I don't even care if Petty ends up playing terrible. We still need to get a sample of what he can do and can he be the guy. Make it happen Woody.

Fitz has become the nightmare movie we can't get rid of and TB has become the director of the movie. This is ridiculous, everybody and their mother can see how horrible we are as a team. We all can also see that with Fitz we're going no where. So why can't TB see it? I'm thinking or wondering is he becoming the black version of Jeff Fisher? No matter what, he will not be forced and pressured into a QB change until he's ready to do so. It seems like he's doing this to spite us all now. It's so obvious it's time for a QB change and we're out of any playoff hunt, so why not? Yes by the math the Jets can win them all and make the playoffs maybe by will they? We all know they won't with any QB we have, so why not bench Fitzshitty at this point?

Bottom line is this team was being built a certain way, maintaining winning while rebuidling certain areas of the roster..... The key to this plan was a veteran QB that keeps the turnovers to a minimal. Fitz's looked like he drastically improved in this area in 2013,2014, and 2015... Hindsight... he got paid reverted back to 2011,2012 Fitz.... It's time regardless if his knee injury is serious or not to move onto Petty and evaluate if he is gonna Be A: The Guy.. B: A guy that can compete to be the guy with hackenberg .. C: Career backup or D: Nada....

I do not wish an injury on Fitz but I do wish for him to be benched for the rest of the year and if that has to go to the football Gods to make that decision for Bowles... So be it!!

I'll never root for someone to be hurt seriously, NEVER, Bowles will never make me stoop to that level, but for those who are falling into that trap, in the words of Chris Rock, I UNDERSTAND, and I blame Bowles, not them.

He should not be putting Jets fans in that position, its like he's daring them to bite the apple.

I think you misunderstood Schefter's report, I think he's saying its not serious enough to bench Fitzpatrick and start Petty.

Unfortunately we still have to depend on Bowles to do that.

Let me clarify something here, it's not that I'm rooting for him to suffer some type of career ending injury but I would like to see him never throw another pass as a Jets quarterback and how ever that comes about, so be it. He's got his money and played a long career. Plus somebody will probably pick him up next year to play for them anyway so everybody wins and everybody's happy.

you have to understand Bowles admires Gailey and has given him full confidence to run the offense how he sees fit... because of this unless the decision comes from the front office where they discuss that we need now to see what or if Petty has any future that he is the acting starter for this week will Bowles trot out there and name him the starter for this week...

Gailey will always hold out if by any chance HIS guys can start they will... Wouldn't put it past Gailey to implement some offensive snaps for Spiller this week... Now whose snaps will they be taken from to give Spiller, hmm...
