Former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Quinton Patton appears to have found a new home. Patton visited with the New York Jets over the weekend, and it sounds like he has signed with the team. Patton has posted good bye messages on Instagram to his former 49ers teammates, and Chris Biderman pointed out that Patton was in a live video on Monday wearing a Jets shirt.

Patton struggled to get going his first two seasons with the 49ers. He played in ten games, and had six catches for 78 yards. In his third and fourth seasons, he started to move in the right direction. He played in the full season in 2015, catching 30 passes for 394 yards and a touchdown. In 2016, he played 14 games, catching 37 passes for 408 yards. It was a step forward, but after a slow start, he did not show nearly enough to convince the 49ers to bring him back.

The 49ers are through the bulk of their free agency additions, and currently have 11 receivers under contract. The group includes Pierre Garcon, Jeremy Kerley, Marquise Goodwin, Aldrick Robinson, Eric Rogers, Bruce Ellington, Aaron Burbridge, DeAndre Carter, Chris Harper, Rashad Ross, and DeAndre Smelter.

Garcon, Kerley, Goodwin, and Robinson all seem like locks to make the roster. The Falcons carried seven receivers at one point last year, so there are between one and three possible openings last year. My early prediction would be Rogers, Ellington and Burbridge are the leading candidates for a roster spot. But it will be interesting to see what the depth chart looks like come August preseason action.

if this is true could spell the end for Jalin Marshall...

Patton has return capabilities...

Very good acceleration off the line, gets to full speed in a couple of steps and can shimmy to free himself and stick his foot in the ground to get inside position on slants...

The best thing this kid brings is a feisty attitude...

he's only returned 10 kicks (and zero punts) in his nfl career, so i'm not so sure on his return capabilities. hopefully it's a small contract with low- or no guarantees, since he's a JAG and shouldn't be assured a roster spot.

I notice one of the trends of this front office, at least this offseason, is to go for younger free agents who have shown improvement. They seem to, as an organization, bet on the trend of a player's trajectory continuing, though it's usually a pretty small wager.

I believe Morton has worked with Patton before but I do agree that he is there to battle it out in camp.

Patton is more than a camp body, and he's definitely not a loser. This guy will make the team, and most likely spell the end for Jalin Marshall and Devin Smith. (Might even beat out Anderson or Peake). He's got wheels in the open field and adjusts nicely to poorly thrown balls. The 49ers used him occasionally on end arounds, and he ripped off a few big runs. He's had some foot injuries though, so that's probably the only thing that could hurt him. He's not going to be a #1 or #2, but he'll be involved in this offense if the foot holds up. Morton has some experience with him. That's certainly part of the reason he was signed.

You're right he definitely is more than a camp body. He might beat out Smith and Marshall...He will at best be our #4... Don't see him getting ahead of Anderson and honestly I think Peake is some serious untapped potential... But we'll see

I would have to say Enunwa's and Anderson's spots are pretty well safe. I'd like to see some competition for Jalin Marshall, and someone who can actually stay on the field. I'm not as down on Marshall as some are, but he's got to hold onto the ball.

Marshalls spot is and very shaky ground and Smith isn't quite solid... He will take one of their spots

i believe it's safe to say devin smith needs to have a strong OTAs/training camp/preseason..

Couldnt agree with you more.

Mac is going the money ball route. Young players who haven't yet tapped into their full potential. Patton has some wheels on him. Also it breeds some good competition for the other KRs/PRS on the squad.
