His name comes up every year around the NFL draft, as the player you don't want to become, even though he is long gone from the league.

The Jets drafted defensive end Vernon Gholston sixth overall out of Ohio State in 2008. He went down as one of the biggest busts in the draft's history.

Gholston had no sacks -- or other notable statistics -- in three seasons with the Jets, who released him four years ago this March.

He was one of several misses in general manager Mike Tannenbaum's final five drafts with the Jets, after he started strong in his first two drafts, 2006 and 2007.

Gholston hasn't played in the NFL since, though he did have brief training camp chances with the Bears and Rams, in 2011 and 2012, respectively.

Then, out of nowhere, Gholston reappeared Tuesday, when he wrote on his Twitter account that Washington was giving him a tryout. He turns 29 in June.

Gholston has been actively promoting his NFL comeback attempt on his Twitter page, which includes "#NFLComeback" and "Working to get back to the top" in his bio.

This was his very first tweet, on Feb. 11:

Even if Gholston fizzles out with Washington, we'll always have this fantastic piece of HBO "Hard Knocks" footage to commemorate his NFL career.

the word as most/all here will remember was he didn't really like footall but juiced at O state to get drafted.. my guess is he still doesn't like football that much but his signing bonus/rookie contract has dried up.. gholston could have learned a lot from curtis martin..

Everytime I hear or read his name I want to throw up. What a waste of a pick. I would love to know what the other 32 teams had him ranked

I liked the pick simply because I fell into that spell of "pass rusher demon" possibilities. I loved the idea, because we needed that so badly. But I remember quite a few fans and pundits express skepticism about it. It made me worry a little.

Now it's all abundantly clear what the naysayers were getting at. An absolutely horrible draft pick. Possibly the biggest bust the Jets have had since Blair Thomas. I hope we never experience that again with such a high draft pick. :smiley-angry046:

Blair Thomas had some success. IMHO, it was Coslet who crushed Thomas' career ..........

Vernon Gholston DE / OLB is my #1 worst draft pick in NY Jets history. Even Sanchez also @ #6 got us to the play-offs twice. Vernon did not get an NFL sack (excluding pre-season) his whole NFL career is pitiful !:scarface-smiley-emo

Go Jets...Cyborg

i think even in pre-season he only got credit for .5 sack not a full sack I believe he shared it with bryan thomas.
