Veteran WR's Cecil Shorts, Stevie Johnson and now Greg Jennings have all been linked in rumors to be talking to the JETS. That being said if we sign one of them .... I think we are telegraphing that we intend to provide Geno Smith with the weapons he needs to be successful .

Who do you prefer? I like Cecil Shorts as our number 3. All three will be great. It does show that we don't have much confidence in Kerley.

i like stevie johnson, cecil, and greg in that order and fitz will be the starting QB anyway.

I like Cecil myself, and Stevie can probably still make plays, especially as a #3 . Jennings, I am not sure what's left in him.
I too believe that if it's between Fitz and Geno, Fitz will outright start and finish the season as our starting QB.

"Provide weapons for Geno"? More like provide weapons for Fitzpatrick & the rookie we will be drafting.

Have people forgotten how horrible this guy played this season?

Games like the one above is what you will get regardless of talent you have around Smith. It truly is unfathomable to think fans still believe in him.

I am holding out hope for Geno because I do think that if he's put in the right situation he can succeed. We just have to limit his thought process. Maybe roll him out some more, split the field in half. If his first read is there sling it, if not, tell him to run. I believe Gailey's offense is designed for that. I posted a thread a while ago that when Geno holds the ball less than 2.5 seconds, his QB rating is incredible - top 5 in the league.

I'am sorry, but when was the last time that type of QB won the Super bowl? 1st read or throw it away? With all due respect, i hope this organization keeps searching for the right QB to win it all. If it's some one they think is worthy of trading up for, then by all means.

I'am done with color coded wrist bands or 1st read, if covered throw it away none sense. This franchise needs a true QB. Gailey's offenses have been adapt to what you have around you and sustain drives. As he did with Dallas, (which was not the spread at all) then Buffalo which he had the personel to do so. Fitz had to make decisons play after play & was not given an indication of throw it away if the 1st option is covered.

Woody is spending alot of cash this off-season and wants to see a winning product. He's seen enough of what Geno can do IMHO hence the Fitz signing and big time rumors that a QB may be looming in the draft. Very high in the draft to trade up for.

We need a deep threat in the slot more than another possession receiver, so I'll take Jennings unless he's lost his speed, which I am not qualified to judge because I haven't seen many (if any) Vikings games since he's been there.

I know he used to be one of the best deep threats in the league when Aaron Rodgers was getting him the ball.

Amari Cooper, Kevin White or Devante Parker. I would take one of the second tier WRs that would go in the later first round or second round honestly before any of these vets. If I have to give a actually answer on the vets I will say Shorts. Younger and better IMO. As for the Geno debate developing on this thread here, I'll pass on commenting this time.

The guy was a major project coming out of college. The INSTANT GRATIFICATION CROWD are giving up after two years. That tells me that they will always give up when a team is trying to develop a young QB, expecially one that did not play under center in college. In my opinion this is the year Geno must step up or out! Three years is long enough for a young QB to show what he has. Guys talking up FITZ conveniently forget that he throws a ton of INTS and fumbles the ball a lot too. Plus he is 32 and not 24. I'd rather we continue to develop a guy who can make all the throws and move in the pocket. Mariota is a project too. The same guys calling for the demise of Geno will be calling for Mariota's head too if he is not a franchise QB the minute he steps onto the field for us. Mariota had all of 5 snaps under center this past year!!!!! Err Fitz was traded for BECAUSE we needed a vet QB behind Geno in case he stumbled. FITZ was not brought here to be our Franchise QB as so many are trying to indicate. He is a mediocre QB at best. Able to move a team and then he makes a stupid mistake. Its usually the same type of mistake, over and over!

Fitz has always thrown many INTS. While he can move a team at times, he is not a great QB nor will he beat out Geno.[/QUOTE

Fitz will be the day one stater unless the Jets trade for or draft someone better than Geno he can not beat him out in a fair completion which I expect.

I tried my best to stay out this Geno debate because I'm just so done with it but I can't resist. I too want Geno gone only because Sanchez has ruined it for all Jets QBs. That situation crushed me with waiting so long to replace him. I say now if a QB can't show me something positive and consistent in two years then he has to go. Not even asking for great but at least positive and consistent. Is that fair, probably not but Sanchez has killed it for all Jets QBs IMO.

With that said, Geno had no chance like Sanchez did. Sanchez played with very good teams year one and two and still came up with mediocre to garbage numbers just like Geno did. Its no comparison. Geno teams have been horrible so far and he will finally get a team worth playing with. A team that can help him and he can probably show he is worth keeping. So if the Jets don't draft Mariota then you have to give Geno another year to see what he can do with a better team.

This Fitzgerald debate is ridiculous. He is 32 and a average to below average QB at best. You guys actually want Fitzgerald starting over a 24 yrs old Geno Smith? Come on people really! IMO in Sanchez being replaced after year four with Geno was correct but I hated Sanchez so much I wanted him gone after year three. If sanchez can get four years, why can't Geno get three? Especially being Sanchez's team years one and two were way better then Geno's teams.

It's a silly debate to me. One will win the job in the preseason. if Geno loses, shame on him; however, Vick beat Foles to start 3 seasons ago, and Foles ultimately came in and saved the Eagles season. if Geno doesn't start, it doesnt mean more time to learn Gaily's offense and game planning wont lead to long term success. Will it? Who knows. But I dont see the point of arguing Fitzpatrick vs Geno until we start reading practice reports and preseason games...

Im not going to be as quick to praise and crown either QB starting QB of the Jets week 1, Bill O'Brien is one of the best QB coaches in the game, and he moved on from Fitzpatrick despite helping him be 17:8 last year...he didnt feel he could be an answer for a Texans team that went 9-7 without a QB last year (essentially) and they know they're solid QB play from being a play off team also...but they didnt want Fitzpatrick.

Im cautiously optimistic either QB can play well, they both have their pros and cons, but pretending to know how our QB position will play out on March 16th is a bit silly, IMO. You can have preferences, but saying Fitzpatrick will definitely beat out Geno or vice versa is baseless as of today.

wonderful....yet another thread devolves into a geno debate... :hijacked:

as to the actually questioned asked in the OP, i don't really see the need to bring in a veteran WR. but of the choices given, i'd go with shorts. he is 27 (turns 28 in late december), whereas johnson will be 29 by the time the season starts and jennings turns 32 in september.

jennings days of being a deep threat seem to be long over. instead of averaging something like 16-17 ypr as he did in his prime, he's now a 10-12 ypr guy. johnson has seen a steady decline in production, although perhaps under gailey he can reverse that trend. so i'd have some interest in him, but only on a short-term and relatively cheap deal.

i can't say i know too much about shorts since he's been stuck in the wasteland that is jacksonville his entire career and has played with dreadful QBs. to me, he seems to have more upside potential than the other two, who imo, are clearly on the downswing of their respective careers.
