FLORHAM PARK — The Jets held their 13th training camp practice on Sunday in the (again) scorching-hot temperatures. As was the case Saturday, the team went the entire prescheduled duration in the 103-degree heat.

On Monday, the Jets will have meetings in the morning, but no on-field practice. Thus, the media will not be in attendance. The Jets will practice again on Tuesday and Wednesday. They play the Washington Redskins in their second preseason game Friday.

So what stood out? Here are three takeaways from practice.

After watching the Jaguars game, I am confident in saying, "Bryce Petty played better overall football than Geno did". In fact, he played better with 3's than Geno did with 2's. I am also shocked to say this, but Bryce Petty has a STRONGER arm than Geno Smith.

All in all, I think there is a tight, neck and neck competition for the 2nd string spot. BRYCE PETTY holds a slight edge over Geno.

I was actually quite impressed with Bryce Petty in the Jaguars game...

I missed the game but read today that Petty was running for his life? Is that true? If so it would seem he played better then Geno...

Running for his life would be a bit of an over statement, but the 3rd string OL really struggled. Petty was under pressure quite a bit. For a green QB he held his composure quite well, and was effective. Showed some indecision when under pressure, but when he had a wall, stepped up in the pocket, and delivered some pretty balls. As a matter of fact, I read an article the other day that said Fitz had the longest pass of the night, but Petty had the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th longest throws. Kid displayed a real live arm.

Under the circumstances, IMO Petty did out play smith.

I agree with Mainejet that Petty has a stronger arm, then smith. I've said that all along. Petty has a very strong arm. He also has a very quick release, in that he doesn't have to wind up at all to throw a ball with a lot of mustard on it. Just cocks it behind his ear, and bang, the balls out. Very valuable skill in the NFL.

Disagree with MJ on the fact that I don't think over all Petty is ahead of smith.....Right now. Remember early in camp, and mini-camp, Petty was playing very badly, and smith was playing very well. At that point I thought Petty's roster spot might even be in jeopardy. IMO smith's still the favorite to win the back up spot, at least on paper, but he can see the headlights in his rear view.

In spite of the "geno's the backup, right now" statement think there is a legitimate QB competition going on. Petty got more reps with the 2's Sunday then smith. He also got more overall reps. If that happens against the Skins, IMO smith is in trouble.

With all of that said I think on paper smith will go into the season as the "official" back up, and the Jets wil carry 4 QB's.....for awhile
